With ammo it’s simple. I figured out how much FMJ I need for practice a month, say 400 rounds. Well I buy 500 a month then. I also buy 1-2 boxes of Critical Duty a month. All of that comes in a little under 200. It’s a priority for me, so I make it happen.

I feel like you should have emphasized the credit card point more. People don't realize how much money they hemorrhage just by carrying a monthly balance. With current interest rates, it's easily $20+ every month in interest fees for every $1,000 of credit card balance. Any budget list should include paying off all credit card balances asap.

I agree for the most part. Sometimes starting out you just need to get rounds put back even if it is just basic ball ammo. I had to get to my comfort place before I could reexamine my goals. It's a lot easier to look at things from your comfort zone it just takes a lot of time and effort to get there and then everything changes.

I bought a new Sling for a new 18" DMR, at 1/2 off, an over production. Already tweaked up everything for my DMR, got the 1x6 Scope over Primary Arms Black Friday Sales in '23, knowing what I was going to purchase. It does take time and discipline, as you said and I concur! Doesn't happen overnight, takes sacrifices, as well, though getting rid of cable made it a Lot easier, right off! Sorry, proud and happy of you and me to get the better items and ammo. Took >10 years for me, too.

It should go in this order; 1.Guns 2.Ammo 3.Magazines 4.optics and accessories that make you more proficient and a formidable force and maintain weapon retention and effectiveness in your capabilities in any situation. 5.Batteries 6.Survival kit such as a sawyer straw, flint and striker, lighter, leatherman, compass (survival also means a medkit). 7.Quality garments for expeditions and trekking. 8.A utility carry-on. That can be a ruck, a plate carrier, LBV/IOTV kit, chest rig kits, fishermens vest, backpack. 9.lightweight and quality cutlery and cookware. 10.A brain; SHTF is a mindset. You have to be prepared to embark on this journey and must be sound in judgment and moral character. You must possess a ton of willpower to be able survive a hard time that you will experience. You must face all challenges and be able to succeed no matter how much you struggle. If you are not mentally up for this treacherous and peril adventure. All of these things listed are useless if you're not gonna try to continue in this new chapter that is SHTF. And I dont think anyone is gonna be ready for SHTF. Not even the most tactical, super duper trooper operators who are well-grounded and successful in this particular side of the world is gonna do well. Alot of things are just out of your control and you have to maintain a will to live no matter what happens to you and everyone around you. Even if you are mentally strong and can withstand the stresses and struggles of this life. It's still gonna affect you and you are gonna have to figure it out on living with all craziness that will come with it.

Here is another good tip- look around your house for crap you don’t need, and sell it! I had some old computers 💻 in my storage shed I no longer need, and I’ve been selling them on eBay! So far, I sold enough to get my new EDC, a really awesome Glock 27! 🔫😎 I also got a great deal on the Glock by being patient and consistently checking the used listings. I didn’t just go buy retail, I kept looking for a deal on one that had what I wanted for a great price.

@@unclefreedom213 Correct me if I’m wrong. But I’ve yet to find any information that states reloaded ammo has a shorter shelf life than factory ammo.. I’m just researching reloading and haven’t actually even bought equipment yet. But from what I can tell there is literally very little if any savings to reloading common rounds like 9mm, 556 and 308, with FMJ that is. However there seems to be a pretty substantial savings if a person takes the brass from the bulk ammo they train with and reload it with a bullet that’s designed to give critters of all sorts a really bad day rather than slinging a bullet that just goes straight through with no expansion. Correct me if my research and math is wrong. Just looked today and a case of 556 FMJ can be had for $550, roughly $11 a box. The cheapest 556 round I seen with a bullet to give critters a really bad day was like $35, that’s roughly $1750. I priced the components utilizing spent brass from bulk FMJ ammo for training that would utilize the same bullet in the factory load and came up with $650-700 to reload 1,000 rounds. I haven’t decided on what equipment I want yet, but leaning towards a single stage mostly for bolt action as well as simplicity with less moving parts and will require more focus and I’m thinking will be better for safety and less mishaps. But there is a lot of options that a person can go and the savings of just reloading 1k rounds would either pay for the equipment if not take a huge dent out of the cost. After that it’s a lot of money that can go towards other gear. I value my time like everyone else. My localish stores seem to usually only have 1 pound jars of powder apposed to the larger containers. Although it’s more expensive to buy by 1 pound I would rather load enough ammo to use it up in a day or 2 once it’s open. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to reload 1k rounds on a single stage in a day or 2, but if my understanding is correct there is around 250-280 rounds worth of powder in 1 pound for 556, that doesn’t seem like it would be to bad. Especially once find a system which I’m sure takes a while. Just thinking buying bulk ammo for training but reloading the brass with a better bullet to put away for SHTF is another way to save money rather than stockpiling factory self defense ammo.. I’m not talking about using reloaded ammo for self defense outside of SHTF, I hear the warnings how that can hang you in the courts (which doesn’t make a lot of sense because buying factory self defense ammo is designed to do the exact same thing..lol. But that’s the world we live in).

Good stuff. Back when I was younger and had to maximize every penny, I used to cash my checks and put the budgeted amount of everything into seperate envelopes. Every payday I'd fill them up and never touch them until it was time to pay rent, get groceries, etc. One of my budget envelopes had "Ammo" written on it. Once a quarter, me and my roommate would get our ammo envelopes out and go halves on a case of range ammo and as many boxes of defensive ammo that we could get. I need to get back to that level of discipline.

This video was useless to me :) ... but only because I use, and have always done, the exact same process. Sometimes the needs list priorities move around, sometimes new info changes goals. Great advice, and well said! The process really works. Perfect example I want to get into rifle/carbine shooting. Thanks to a newish law in the EU I need a special additional license for rifle magazines holding more than 10 rounds. I found out the only way to get that is start IPSC (initially with pistol). I did this and discovered I could not afford the ammo cost. So instead refocussed on pistol marksmanship and allocated resources that way while I built up resources to train and compete in IPSC affordably without affecting my other goals. Take your time, keep an eye on your budget, and keep your head on a swivel and some flexibility.

The only FMJ handgun ammo that should be stockpiled for SHTF type scenarios is 230gr ACP. That being said said, I do have a nice amount of 124gr HST put back to run my 9mm handguns if any sort of social occasion should arise. It’s still nice knowing there is a Glock 21, plus a 1911 or so, and a case of .45 sitting in reserve. Of course those are the only 2 defensive handgun calibers I own, excluding one Ruger LCP Max, which rarely gets carried. It’s basically only for extreme low profile/max discretion situations.

Excellent info. My choice has been to "reach gun goal" and now I'm building a small business. So that is where my money is going. Beer is subordinate to the gun budget. Guns are now subordinate to the Business. Business (small farm) is the Big Prep. All other preps need to serve the needs of the Big Prep. Now when I was bringing home $1800/month (up until 2019) and supporting my wife and kiddo, my budget was ONLY FMJ. I had 1 box of 9mm HP. I had a few boxes of 7.62x39 SP for hunting. Hunting helped the budget go further. Hunting has been important for feeding my family. Everything else was FMJ. I saved up all year once to buy 500 rounds of 9mm remanufactured at Christmas. And shot 50 rnds a month for the next 10 months. Practice was very deliberate and focused. Stuff can happen on a small budget. But my goals had to be very limited. And I still have to be disciplined with money even though I now am doing better than in 2019.

As someone who is working full time and in school full time, doesn’t drink, or smoke, and has a very limited budget while being married, I think that the outburst from the ammo video was because it was a bare minimum video. Not a goal for the future, not something to build towards, it was a BARE MINIMUM, as in you should have it right now. Hardly anyone on here has the budget to “budget” 10s of thousands of dollars. I would love to build up to the numbers presented, but having 1000 rounds of ball is all that I can afford to maintain while also buying training ammunition. Just a poors perspective

Seriously look into reloading. You can save quite a bit loading your own training ammo. Self defense ammo should be factory, but training ammo is prime for reloading. Also, you can load your range ammo to approximate your carry ammo! Pick a similar weight bullet, pick a similar powder, similar primer, and use your carry ammo brass for shells to reload! 😂 I got a Lee hand press, and dies for 9mm, .40, & .38/.357 along with the necessities for a few hundred dollars, and I can load up a few hundred rounds in the time it takes to watch a movie. And for a fraction of the price, and higher quality and consistency than buying reloads, along with approximating my carry loads. It’s a win/win!

Bad advice on credit cards. Having good credit gets you discounts on many things such as insurance and lower apr on loans such as cars etc. You can get credit cards with no annual fee, cash back rewards, and you pay 0% interest when you pay it off every month. So you literally get paid to use it and your credit saves you money on future purchases so you use it in lieu of cash. I'm sure there are people who can't be adults, and that's who this video sounds like it was meant for and hopefully your way helps them. To the people with any type of impulse control, credit cards are great.

Discipline isn't negotiable. Either you absolutely have it, or you DONT. No in between at all. 99% of people would be better of not buying any gear and simply buying a gym membership and a subscription or two for gathering guidance and knowledge. Gear is overrated

I agree there is no substitute for knowledge but as a guy who has lived in gear for over 2 decades all over the world and in and out of bad situations there is no substitute for good well designed gear either. Sure I know how to reverse wrap cordage, knap a knife blade and build primitive shelter but I woild rather have the gear so I don't have to.

@@unclefreedom213 Likwise and agree to that, I guess a little separation and context helps 👍

I wait for deals on federal HST+P 124gr 9mm (~$500/1000), HST 230gr 45 (~$600/1000), underwood ammo in .308 and 10mm when I get 25%-45% off emails. I buy 1000 round lots of NATO 124gr 9mm at $260-$280. I’m waiting for 10mm HST’s to become available in bulk at a reasonable price ($2/round ain’t it, 😂) so I can hopefully pick up some 1000 lots of that as well. I only buy it on sale. I already have a stockpile, I simply need to keep it topped up and rotate some stock. All sealed and dry, neat and tidy. SGAmmo, Bereli, and sometimes Velocity or Buckinghorse Outpost. All great online options for bulk and discounts.
