I remember when 40 S&W was the hottest thing talked about with Glock 22 & 23 in most cops holsters . I always liked big revolvers but about 10 years ago I bought a Gen 3 Glock 27 . It took me awhile to get accurate with the 27 but nowadays I'm more accurate and enjoy 40 caliber more than 9 most days .

Couldn't agree more about the viability of this cartridge... I personally believe that the 40 S&W is to the semi auto what the 357 magnum is to the revolver... That is the single most versatile round available... It is literally a do all round, depending on how it's loaded. We too are issued the G22. I would personally choose the S&W 2.0 over the G22, but that's just my choice. I hope the we never step down to 9mm here, but as everything else, I'll adjust if it happens.

Not saying your right or wrong but name a caliber/bullet that everyone loves and no one hates b/c they never had one bad experience with, good luck. I know many people that had deer run off never to be found after being shot with a 7mm mag, 30-06, 300 win and etc. Does that mean those calibers are no go for deer hunting?...

Having owned a S&W 1076, I'm calling BS on the trigger comment. Trigger reach was just like shooting a 1911. I've fired a Glock model 22 and 23. Recoil is noticeably brisker versus a 9mm. Just slapping a 40 S&W barrel in a 9mm is one of the worst ways to make a gun for this cartridge. The best handgun for shooting 40 S&W is a double-stack 1911. It just works. Everyone who complains how snappy 40 is don't have that problem when shooting something like a Para Ordnance. Thanks to the FBI saying the 9mm is sufficient for use, everyone dropped the 40 like a bad habit. Looking at what pistols are coming out now, NONE are in 40. Just FYI, Underwood seems to be overstating their bullet speeds when checked against a chronograph. Their 155gr 10mm load is supposed to hit 1550 fps. I've seen multiple people testing this round and it's running about 100 fps less than advertised out of a Glock model 20.

What's your thoughts on 357sig? I worked with a guy that sold me on the idea, but I have yet to acquire one. A bottled neck cartridge that helps eliminate feeding issues, hot enough to cycle reliably, same capacity and frame size as a 40. The only downside I'm hearing of is that most companies load bullets designed for 9mm. velocity.

I didn't have a 40 until about a year ago, I had shot it before and it was really accurate for me, I just didn't want to add another caliber to have to feed. But after doing a lot of research and talking to friends in law enforcement, I couldn't resist. Got a G27 Gen 5, and holy cow.. with a pinky extension, I love that thing. I also put a conversion barrel in my G20 for it. Everybody keeps saying it's dead, everybody keeps saying it's just a brutal round on the gun and 9mm can do everything just as good. But, almost everybody I know comes out and says how much they love it and they still have theirs. And over the past 18 months, I've noticed the 40 section of several stores starting to fill out again. I think 40 is making a comeback, people still like 9mm, But I think they are beginning to understand that there is a reason for 40 to still exist - It's absolutely proven. And I've said this before, if you look at all of the charts for 9mm and terminal stops, nobody talks about the fact that the loads are +P or +P+. I carry 9 like all of us, but it has occurred to me that to get that good performance, it has to be a higher-powered 9. Or, I can just carry a 40 and be done with it. 😂 What I really would like now, is a PDP compact in .40. My birthday is coming up, I'm feeling the need to buy myself a birthday present.

Great overview, UF. Would be curious about your opinion on dropping 357Sig conversion barrels into G22, M&P40, etc. M&P mags even say "40/357", so they are the same, unlike Glock mags. It obviously works, but there's claims that the frames can't take the prolonged abuse and that it's the reason for M&P discontinuing them in the first place.

There's really only 5000 more psi which is less than a 9mm nato pressure firing same weight projos. There will be more wear but not really a lot more than 40. as far as the mags any 40 mag will run 357 sig just fine since it's the same case

I adore the 40 S&W, sure the recoil is more than 9mm but its not enough of a slow down in rate of fire to make a difference but the terminal performance is better than a surprisingly number of cartridges. What made me fully trust that round was I had a buck get between me and my 300 sav as I was preparing dinner and I used a 180 grain gold dot on this buck at about 7 yards and the buck ran 50 ish yards and died. The damage was impressive but not close to the results of a rife. Years ago I used to use 9mm in a full size S&W M&P and I was down stacking my mags to 15 for ensured reliability and easier to keep track of how much ammo I had shot under stress. A 40 down stack was also 15 but spare mag was 14. I realized that my capacity was the same but power is better with a 40 and capacity difference would only matter at the end of my 2nd magazine.

Let's not gloss over the fact that major PF was thought up by Fudds who didn't like those new 9mm pistols and wanted to keep people shooting .45 ACP because I guess it wasn't American enough. I'd call citing it making major as being part of "ahead of the curve" is wrong. For example, it's impossible to make major in 5.7x28mm.
@unclefreedom213
@unclefreedom213 20 сағат бұрын
Can't really cakk them Fudds back then as they were on the right side of performance shooting. Major PF was just acknowledging that some rounds recoil more making faster follow up harder so they made essentially a handicap not unlike golf

At one point I picked up a LE trade in Glock 22, I didn't really like the 40S&W so I picked up a conversion barrel for .357 Sig. Still have the barrel for the 40S&W if I want to change it back. I really like the .357 Sig I think it is underrated. I do love the 10mm especially in a 1911 frame that is some power.
@languagesource355

Gen 3 or Gen 4 G22? Wondering if the single Gen 3 recoil spring handles the 357 sufficiently. It certainly works on both, but I have to wonder about longevity and parts wear. I guess it's more of a range toy? Not sure if it could be depended on in critical situations.
@unclefreedom213
@unclefreedom213 20 сағат бұрын
The only issue with 357 sig is its more wear and tear more blast, more flash and you really don't gain anything over what's out there and in fact lose a lot in terms of actual terminal performance. It's a cool round and it does some badass stuff but the 357 sig is extremely close to a dead round. No real improvements in the projos since it's a different diameter than any other bullet in a semi auto. I like using the Lone Wolf conversion barrels myself
@ROE675
@ROE675 20 сағат бұрын
@ Gen 3, it is just a range toy, I am very hesitant to use something that modified when life depended on it. I know that some 40S&W's have had problems because the firearms were designed around the 9mm and the 40 is harder on the components. If I were going to do a lot of shooting with the .357 Sig I would probably replace the spring with something a little heaver, but I would be surprised if I have put 200 rounds through it in 5 years.
@ROE675
@ROE675 19 сағат бұрын
@ I totally agree that nothing has been done with the cartridge and even Sig doesn't sell a firearm in that caliber anymore. I just really think it is a unique round and it is underrated. I usually carry a 9mm because rounds are ubiquitous and currently have some great options. If I needed more power I would go with 10mm for dangerous game or what not. I think I just like the .357mag and the idea of being able to get near that performance in a high capacity semi auto is a neat idea.
