Until the 1960s, all 35mm film was sold this type of cartridge. Then, Kodak decided to start selling their 35mm in cartridges which had stacked on end-caps, i.e., not removable. I don't think any reason was publicized at the time, but Kodak did then start selling These snap-n cap cartridges as a separate product for folks reloading bulk film. Other film producers follow suit. Some time in the late 1970s or 80s, the plastic cartridges with screw-on end-caps replaced the boxes of snap-on types. I've reloaded bulk film sine the early 1960s (when practically all films were sold in bulk rolls). I find that the plastic cartridges with screw-on ends are the easiest to use and the most durable. The one thing I never do, yet which seems to be most commonly proposed in YT videos, is the process of reusing stack end-cap cartridges, as used for normal retail 35mm film sales, by taping more film to a stub film end and winding the new film into the old cartridge. IMO the felt light traps used in those cartridges as made as thin and cheaply as possible, and they will not sustain much reuse without light leaks. In my experience, the highest quality 35mm cartridges ever made were those routinely used to sell Agfa film before they followed Kodak to stacked cartridges. Their end-caps snapped on and off cleanly and easily, compared to Kodak's, which were made to a lower quality standard, and were often a hassle to reattach the end-caps.

I have a supply of these metal cartridges. I like them better than the plastic cartridges. The felt is better, the sizing is a better fit in the camera and the snap caps seem to work OK. Admittedly the snap caps are a bit fiddley but back in the 70s that’s all that was available. Currently I’m just using a 1” square of 3M tape. I butt the film up to the plastic and apply the tape, it does not fold over the joining area like you demonstrate. So far I find that it is just strong enough to work and when I’m loading the developing reel and I get to the tape I can tear it from the cassette. No scissors required in the dark bag. (I find the tape dispenser helpful too). Snap caps were important because back in the 70s I would tape the film directly to the spool there was no plastic tab. The advantage of taping the film directly to the spool was the alignment provided by the spool flanges. I’ve recently had one case where I didn’t get the plastic tab and film aligned and when I was winding on the film jammed between the canister and the edge of the spool flange. So far I’ve had no issues with these cartridges 👍

Last time, I did loop the sticky tape around the film. The issue I found that it can cause uneven film rolling inside the cartridge. At times, I could not even load 35 exposures into the cartridge. Since then, I would use 2 separate pieces of tape, one on each side, to secure the film onto the cartridge takeup. Problem solved.

This is awesome! I usually have to spool down to 100 ft rolls when I get a 400ft roll since that's the most my bulk loader can take. but it's awesome to see that there's one that can take 400ft. No more respooling! When will this be available and what would be the price range? would love to know, thanks!

Currently the price is set at $400 for the loader. We spent a good amount of time trying to figure the pricing out. The only other 400' on the market is $1000! They should be available early February.

@@MidwestFilmCo for a 3D printed one $400 is quiet steep sorry.There s an automated version of it with the counter from Reflx for $799 and it takes 1000ft spool.400ft version is around $500 and it's not hand-cranked.

@@user-pt5lg7zn3pWe dropped the price to $299. The Reflex loader is printed minus the mags. They’re also building them in China so the labor may be cheaper. I’m good friends with the owner of Reflx. He’s doing amazing work for the photography industry! I’d say, buy the Reflx if you think you’re going to bulk 100s or 1000s of rolls!

Awesome! A quick (and potentially noob) question is, do you need to use a changing bag to get the roll into the loader?

That's awesome! What tape do you use? I've just finished my first bulk load shot a roll and the tape I used failed 😭😅
@Vintage35MM
@Vintage35MM 10 ай бұрын
Describe how it failed and what tape did you use. Did the adhesive fail to stick or did it split. Some tapes and plastics are oriented to be stronger in one direction than the other. IE. length wise is stronger rather than width wise. I’ve used everything from painters tape to 3M Magic Mending Tape. Some masking tape or artists tape can be low tack (designed for easy removal), but one can test this before committing. Also you might describe your camera. Some more recent cameras have auto rewind that are triggered by the DX code on the film cassette. Unless you’ve created these labels, or are reusing a cassette with the same ISO and frame count, see if you can manually initiate the film rewinding.
