Well you need to mordant your fiber before you dye if you want the colours to have the best chance of adhering properly to the fibers. Lemon juice is a colour modifier which means the acidity can change the colours and iron is too... it normally dulls the colours and also acts as a mordant. You can make your own rusty solution or you can buy ferrous sulphate powder on line 😊

I'm really interested in dying paper. I've read that raw red cabbage juice plus baking soda will make a bright blue. Then cooked red cabbage will be blue dye but if you add vinegar or lemon juice it will change to a red dye. All depends on the pH.

Yes cabbage is my FAVE for making my thank you tickets on my orders. Me and bill paint the cabbage juice on water colour paper and if you add lemon juice it goes bright pink! We have a video here somewhere 😉💗

It’s called ferrous sulphate. You can head to my website Billynou.com “buy natural dyes” or use this link themazi.com/. It will take you to the mazi and they sell natural dyes and iron powder. The iron powder is used as an extra mordant to help with colour fastness but will change the colours and you absolutely don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. Hello ... I find it’s best to mordant your fibers before hand with alum or aluminium acetate but you could also use iron after the process but this will also sadden the colours to greys and blues

Well it definitely won’t last as long and may change ... using protein fibers like silk and wool tend to take the colours more readily without mordanting but if you want colours to last on cellulose fibers then mordanting is a good ideas 😊

Hey, you might be interested in some of my bother videos on mordanting. Natural dyes will never “fix” like synthetic dyes, it’s part of their charm and them being alive. But mordanting your fibers can help a lot with the colour fastness. 😊

Hello ... so you can use any protein rich milk .. you could try oat or hemp and even cows milk.... I’m not sure of the results as I only use soya but it’s worth experimenting! I like using the milk method because it is very simple and effective but you can also use metal salt mordants like alum or you can use tannin baths. Thank you for watching my channel 🤍🌱🤍

It’s always best to hand wash naturally dyed items gently with cool water to help the colours last as long as possible. We try to see the changing colours as part of their living personality, so different to synthetic dyes. 😊

Silk is the best to try it on.... it just soaks up the colours. Mordant with alum before hand for extra pop. Try stuff like onion skins, marigolds and coreopsis flowers .... ❤️

Hello ☺️ I wouldn’t advise washing them in the washing mashine if you want your colours to last as long as possible and if you don’t want to use a mordant I’d suggest using a binder like soy mill( see our soy milk video) or using protien (animal) fibers for deeper longer lasting colours 🥰

It’s exactly the same principle.... the colours will “melt” or bleed through the layers and when you roll they will touch other parts of the fiber. I just throw them on top ☺️

That really depends on what dyes and fabrics you use and if you’ve scoured and mordanted your fiber and with what.... it’s always variable. The colours will never be like synthetic dyes 💜

I look at your videos and really appreciate the. I tried thrice. All the flowers whether yellow orange pink ...turn purple black. Quite demotivating. Also the print is only shabby ..no definition. What could I be doing wrong.

This could be due to the ph of your water or detergent that your using... also some flowers change colour once they oxidise ... try some different flowers and see what happens ☺️

I just like to rinse with cool water after they’re dry ... it probably doesn’t make that much difference but I fell like it helps the colours get a better hold onto the fabric 😊

Hey!! Mine is actually not a steamer! It’s just a big pot with a bid colander inside it... you can do this with any size pot .... sometimes I even tie bundles to the handles of my pots so they can just hang in the steam 🤪

Thank you! So the fastness really depends on so many factors including the dyes used, pretreatment and after care etc.... they are not “fast” like synthetic dyes but can be very long lasting and the changes can be endearing and also over dyeing can be quite fun too. Rust is just iron so not toxic except in large quantities... I always use a mask if I’m using the powder and gloves if I’m immersing my hands/fabric and keep away from pets and kids just to be safe 😊

You’re welcome 😊 you can use either or all. Sometimes you might find the aluminium pits add a little extra bite or mordant to the fiber and that’s why some people choose them but stainless steel works just fine.

Yes you can and yes it could modify the colours which can be fun!

Well you could try solar dyeing.... when you use the heat from the sun to extract the colours onto the fabric. The principle is quite simple but I does take a few weeks rather than an hour or so. I’m not experienced with solar dyeing but I think a quick google could provide some more info 🌞🌼🌻

Hey so ... I wonder what kind of flowers you were using? Some do really work better than others... try things like marigolds, coreopsis and some leaves like eucalyptus can work really well and onion skins are great... also sometimes giving your bundle a dip in iron water can really bring out the colours but they will be more greys and blues with the iron. Make sure you’re using natural fibers and you could try mordanting your fibers too. Hope that helps ☺️.

It depends a lot on the dye material you use, the fabric you use , the mordanting method and how you wash your fibers. Gentle hand washing with ph neutral soap is generally advised and you can achieve long lasting results with a bit of knowledge and experience 💗🌸

Hey ... well if they’re properly dry then they shouldn’t be developing mould or fungus..... I’ve had some in a jar for a very long time without them going mouldy but I usually use them very fast so I guess they don’t have a chance... maybe where you live is a little more humid than here 🤔

It depends what kind of flowers and mordanting process you’ve followed but I tend to hand wash or cook short wash on the machine. Having said that, I have loads of baby clothes that are naturally dyed and I’ve given up hand washing 😆 and wash at 30/40 I’ve been very surprised with how well they cope ❤️
