I was born in the digital age, but I prefer physical media. I don’t want to pay a ton of different subscriptions to watch the shows I like and listen to the movies I like. I’d rather make a one time purchase of a CD or DVD and get to watch/listen to it as many times as I want without any buffering as long as I take good care of it. Also, there’s just something different about putting a record on or listening to a CD in my room, or even listening to a good radio station. I want to try and burn a CD of my favorite songs that are only available as singles so even if the artist made their albums on records or CDs, I wouldn’t be able to get a hold of it.

I had ripped all my CD's to digital years ago, I'm old 62. a couple of years ago I had a house fire that destroyed my CD collection. I was able to salvage my hardrives. I began to burn these back to CD's. I have burned over 350 plus back. With covid, I was able to buy a refurbished NAD CD player for a reasonable price. I do have blusound node2i as well. I a'm retired now, but burning to CD is actually fun. I noticed that Fractal Design released a case, The Fractal Pop that actually has a 5.25 drive bay. My car doesn't have a drive, so my CD is home use only.

I burn CDs, but not for a mix cd or anything but to back up the actual cd itself. A lot of CDs I get are pre-owned because you know their loss is my gain, some though have been quite difficult to find and have been a bit more expensive than I'd usually pay so I make the backup so the original is safe in its case. The last lot of CDRs I had were Hp, they weren't to bad and I can't remember having any trouble with them. As for the burning part it depends on how I ripped the cd, sometimes I'd use the free personal use only version of Acohol100% which you can make an image of the cd and burn it through the app itself. If I rip it as FLAC I use Anyburn and that seemed to be ok.

Great summary Mike, enjoyed the video and agree with a lot of what you said. Thanks. Thought it was just me that still burned CDRs! Some thoughts from an old Napster/Winamp "veteran"... (1s and 0s are all the same folks, this probably isn't for you) To save reading heres the short version: What I found to give best results reliability, ease of use and sound quality. RIPPING: Exact Audio copy ripped to AIF (not Flac) using external compression encoder SoX. Flac format is fine too, lowest compression level 5 is default set to 1, no encoder needed but 2-3% less sound quality when file burned. (in my opinion!) CD MEDIA: JVC/CMC Pro Taiyo Yuden BURNING: 16/44 - Foobar2000 with Audio CD Writer plugin added Hires - CDBurnerXP (automatic conversion to 16/44 prior to burning) - burn at lowest speed your drive can do. But there's more... Audiophile nerd with this stuff from back in the day, found over the years that the combination of what CDR media burning software used can give different results sound quality wise? Spent a bit of time chasing that "best sound quality", my $0.02 worth I found in my travels. Great Online resource all things CD here: www.cdrinfo.com/forum/ * RIPPING EAC for burning is the way to go for the most accurate rip, absolutely. 1 thing? Originally ripped to FLAC, compression level 5? Always the curious one, I compared AIF (apple lossless) rips to FLAC. Both "lossless" and whilst TECHNICALLY no difference _bits are bits, right?_ AIF rips sound better to me than Flac. There ARE technical differences in both formats, maybe one makes the CPU work less in umcompressing the file - Who knows? Mad, I know, but enough of a difference to have re rerip my CDs in AIF format. * WHAT CDR MEDIA TY CDR media is hands down the best, tried several brands and these always won out for sound quality and failure rate. * BURNING 2 scenario's: - burning 16/44 CD quality to CD - burning Hires to to CD (You can burn DSD to CD, but thats outwith scope of my word salad here) Tried most software out there and after much trial and error heres what works best for me. 16/44 Foobar 2000 with Audio CD Writer plugin added. www.foobar2000.org/ www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_burninate Can do DSP downsampling, Dither and Replaygain, but most importantly has a "burn gaplessly" tickbox. Maybe less CPU numbercrunching in the burn process, dunno, but burnt CDs sound better in comparison to other software I've tried. Hires You need to downsample hires to 16/44 before you can burn it onto a CD. How? Sometimes the best source for sensible information on this stuff comes from the Pro Audio world, those guys record and master the music we listen to. They would, say, record a session in 24/96 and downmix it to 16/44 for sending out CDs to get approval on. How do they do it? You can acually do it in Foobar Audio CD Writer plugin, just set it to 16/44 and your good to go, and some of those guys do just that. I tried many different ways, from free to pro level Weiss Saracon software and all were more/less work and sounded slightly different. Happily to me what sounded the best converting hires to 16/44 was the easiest to use, the conversion all done automatically was a free software you mentioned Mike, CDBURNER XP After using the Weiss software and able to control every conversion setting, not knowing how CDBurner XP did its conversion took a bit of getting my head around, but it DID sound the most like the original Hires file out of all of them. Happy now in the way I rip and burn CDs now - since and simple and I know Im getting great results and dont need to look further.

I've a similar experience with Foobar and Flac files by playback. PC is connected via HDMI thru GPU to AV Receiver. I don't know if it's the "Noise" of the PC Hardware or something with Foobar but for me it Sounds better also as AIF if it's pure wav. But i don't hear that difference when i use picoreplayer with a pi zero w via HDMI to the AV Receiver with LogitechMediaServer as Source from NAS.

I burn CD-Rs for a different reason. I like to "remaster" certain CDs because they then sound better to me. Especially older pressings. I use Foobar2000 to host the dsp plugins I use and directly convert the CD to remastered WAV files. I then use Foobar2000 to burn the new CD either with or without gaps. I also use the Superdrive with my Windows notebook.

@@audioarkitekts I used music cdrs on my JVC XL-5000 CD/CDR three tray CD recorder which copied an original red book ( master ) cd using a one-bit recording process resulting in an exact first generation duplicate of the original. The unit had a SCMS ( serial copy management system ) that installs a copy-bit in the copied CD preventing the recorder from making second generation or "serial" copies. But it did allow burning further copies of the red book ( master ) cd. In the 18 years I owned the unit I burned over 1,100 cds before the unit quit the burning process. It still plays all cds. After it stopped burning, 2 years ago, the parts needed became unobtainable for repair. It still plays all cd media. I listen to it with a vintage Kenwood receiver while working in my garage. Marrantz also made such a unit. Stereophile tested and recommended both units for their one-bit recording process. Wow, I miss making those copies.

Mike, I am 71 years old and enjoy all your informative videos. Going back to my earlier remarks concerning Taiyo Yuden. T Yuden assisted in the development of the cd with Sony and Phillips.They made some metal particle chrome position tapes for "Harman America" ( division of Harman International ) which were sold under the name "TRIAD". If referring to music TRIAD may mean 3 music notes. I dnk for sure. They had a funnel shaped window on the cassette. BTW I am not embarrassed to say I still listen to cassettes while working in my garage.They were recorded on my still functioning Nakamichi deck. OMGosh. Now I know I am older than I realized.Thnx for keeping it interesting.

I hear burning speed can affect readability on some devices (the faster you burn the less readable). How much truth is there on this? Great video btw. I love CDs and this channel.
@EricB256
@EricB256 9 ай бұрын
My experience is that burning at slow speed delivers a longer timespan of readability for CD-Rs, including data CDs.. I've tested this with different older CD players that have less developed error corrections. The burner and the speed is most likely just as or more important to preserving your data over time than the quality of the empty CD-R.

As a former employee in the industry and developing the quality measuring equipment of optical media. A "trick" to actually get "better"/"acceptable"/"in specification" blank CD-R records. Is to buy a branded one! Why? It is that CD-R manufactures makes the stamper so that the first ones is actually slightly out of specification but when it starts to wear down the stamper it slowly goes to be in specification. Until it get worn out and getting out of specification again and needs to be replaced. So all those that's "in specification" limits (for the CD-R specification it is not red book it is actually orange books that I have used to implement test parameters from in the test equipment that determine if a disc is in or out of specification.) Will get a brand and all other that actually works somewhat but are out of the orange book specification will get sold as "no name" CD-Rs. In other words the manufacturer has fully control of their production and the quality and there is quality reasons why it is cheaper and "no name" even if the disc is made in the same plant and mashine as the branded CD-Rs are made. So no those discs is not "actually brand X and sold as no names". And no there is no bargain to be had. (If someone thought that). Another tip to get as good quality as possible is to try to make sure that the latest FW is used in the drive that is available. And it is not that simple that 1x burn speed is giving better results than 52x burn speed does. Actually to know the optimal speed to use with a specific type of CD-R is to try them out and test the results you get. But that equipment is not available for us. But maybe I would go down a notch from the specified speed that the disc is certified for. For example if it is a 52x disc (yes disc dictate the speed not only the drive) then go with 48x. And trust me 1x is not getting the job better.. it is more complex than we can imagine and to long to go into here. Good luck with your endeavour into burning CD-R:s. ❤

I even heard that LP disks have better sounds than digital and CDs so some bands have started to make their albums as LP again too. Im a 95 kid and VHS , casette and cd are sooo nostalgic it feels so much cozier to hold something authentic in your hands I also like the esthetics it comes with. I never got a chance to make anyone a mixtapeand now almost no one own a casette reader let alone not a VHS reader and some even started to stop using CDs too man BUT IM TRYIn I just bought a DVD burner so I can watch nostalgic movies (that don't exist anywhere online to stream) and I also bought empty DVD disk and VHS discs to save precious shows on from places online that might delete them etc. so that's the benefit you can watch stuff that osent exist on Netflix like you're favorite childhood cartoons etc. only obtainable on secondhand etc. Also now I can make personalized CD or DVD for someone puta bunch of own made printed stickers and own printed cover for it and give to them its like a lil package :) Sadly I cant customize very much in spotify...........so this is the way to go bring back the 90s! Excuze me but how is qobuz cheap a song cost 1,7$ there and on itunes it cost 1,2$. Also what microphone do you use it seems GOOOD

The first and best result that is comparable to my store bought cd's was K3B on Linux Mint, then I used the xfce burn utility that totally destroyed the rip. Lastly I used Windows Media Player as I did my WHOLE LIFE and it worked perfectly and was the easiest but had less features and was roughly the same output and quality of my aux from my phone. I also want to note that K3B allowed me to set an artist and album name that my cd player in the car actually displayed so not only did it sound the best but it had that little extra touch. Unfortunately the second and 3d burn attempt totally failed so I switched :(

I wish there was burnable cds whether they are cd-r's and cd-rw's that have the durability of blu ray discs since blu ray discs are impervious to scratches. I have burn cds that end up getting scratches on them, they skip on them and sometimes are even unplayable because its loading the whole time, than the music player that I use ends up freezing since the cd is scratched up and than I get the notification that the cd is damaged and won't play. I even get the cds to see if there is any disc rot and there is no disc not at all, just a bunch of scratches on cds. If there were discs that impervious like blu ray discs that has the same high capacity of hard drives, I would use them instead of hard drives and ssds since hard drives and ssds are known for failures with limited amount of read and writes. I would use blu ray discs for long term archival if there was options for large capacity hard drives but in a blu ray format. You can rewrite on a rewrite on a disc multiple times without the limitations of read and writes like hard drives and ssds. I had burned discs on rewriteable discs that have failed during a burning disc process and I would erase the whole disc and burn from the same disc again and it would work. It works every time. I would continue the same cycle every single time I burn a disc or multiple discs whenever they fail to burn due to an error during the burning the disc process. It works every time I do it, it's very tedious and time consuming but it's worth it because at least I know that it's reliable and it's fool proof. I had to go thru multiple discs that were write once and not rewriteable and they end up failing and I had to throw them away which really sucks because it was annoying when it happened. I bought the write once discs because they were cheaper than the rewriteable discs plus the write once discs had more available in a bundle than the rewritable discs when they are on sale. I go to thrift stores such as goodwill and value village to find blank cds and blank dvds. Most of the time, they look brand new plus they are very cheap. I shop for blu ray movies, dvds, cds and sometimes cassette tapes whenever I shop at thrift stores. I randomly seen vintage gear from goodwill and value village, every once in a while I will go to salvation army and look for the same things that I do at goodwill and value village. I use media monkey free version since it's available for only windows plus i use it to sync my music library with my android devices and you can use media monkey to burn your cds. I like media monkey way better than iTunes on windows since iTunes would freeze everytime on windows. I only use windows, android and chrome os. I would use linux if it had the same support like windows but I play pc games from steam, epic games and gog games plus windows has better support for using any program and support for android apps on windows 11. I still don't like windows 11, the only thing that I like about windows 11 is support for android apps but that's all. I had too many issues with nvidia drivers when I was using linux ubuntu debian in the past when I installed linux on a windows vista laptop to replace windows vista since I never like the way windows vista was very slow and the linux ubuntu debian was more reliable and faster than windows vista besides the nvidia driver issues I had.

Okay so this is gonna make me sound a little stupid but I honestly don’t know anything about CDs. I’m 15 and I haven’t ever burned a cd and have only ever used them a couple times, and they were my dads. I’m really glad you went into detail about the process and explained what’s what. I want to make a few playlists for my brothers car, since it doesn’t have an aux and he loves music. We’re gonna be sharing the car once I learn to drive to this is gonna be really nice once i do learn. I love music but streaming is really expensive and I just can’t afford to have music AND tv anymore. I’m really excited to learn more about this and get to doing it. Anyways thanks for making this it’s really helpful for younger generations that don’t know much about how to make physical media! Edit: does anyone have recommendations for cheaper external players? And programs? I’m broke/saving a lot of my money for a concert lol. Sorry for being so out of touch for this, it’s my first time ever learning about it 😅

Without even watching this just yet I quickly wanted to ask how to separate a saved KZbin list of music which is also in video format of course into individual TRACKS to use in my Vehicles CD player? I have the Wondershare utility/App on my Macbook Air and download the KZbin videos with that but I want to create a CD for the Car......and so not sure how to burn them into individual tracks an not just one long list of music all playing continuously in the car and not being able to skip tracks or go back to a track and whatnot?

Streaming sucks ass, uses data, and is just a general pain in the ass. Using music on a device is a PITA. My iPod died a decade ago, and both iOS and Android will delete legally owned versions of my music. Last year I got a used vehicle that has a cassette and CD player. and it has been a treasure listening to 10-20 year old "mixtapes." I haven't ripped and burned in over a decade, but I'm looking forward to doing it again.

I've been trying to get cd-rs to work in my car radio (toyota 16823), but it always plays the CD's so jittery, and buggy, but plays cd-roms just fine. I'm using verbatim cd's with a slim-style lg cd+dvd read/writer (GP63EX70), with windows media player, with MU3, as an audio disc. I don't know where I'm going wrong with this, I desperately need help so I can play music on my car radio :(

Artists are remastering thier catalogs, and the original recordings are disappearing at an alarming rate. Artists are pulling the originals and replacing them with tracks that just sound a little different. Physical media will be the only way to the original recording. It trips me out that I am old enough to remember the start of the CD craze and all the way though to the commercial death of CD's (generally speaking, but never dead to me/us). Now thier are CD hipsters lol. What a ride.

I will be honest, I download my music through some rather *_illegal_* means. One reason is I'm poor. Another is I don't have the best internet connection. Edit: I'd use CMC pros for CD-Rs to burn music onto. Professional grade. Would be great for someone like me, who'd want to record some music on my own and make physical copies of it. And Taiyo Yuden is no longer around. They shut down around 6 or 7 years ago.

Slower is better in terms of reliability of subsequent read-out with regular CD players (at least in theory). There used to be a 1x option in the early days, which obviously took 40-50mins to write a regular-length album to CD.

I record live concerts and am able to record at 16/44.1 all the way up to 24/196. I can easily downsample the higher res files to 16/44.1 for burning to a CD-R for duplicating. However, you can’t burn any file larger than 16/44.1 onto a CD-R. You CAN burn a hi-rez file to a DVD Data disc using a computer disk drive however, but it’s only playable on computers and certain DVD players. In my experience, when playing one of those on a standard DVD player, you can only start at the beginning and let it play through. Pausing or fast-forwarding/rewinding the disc only results in a hiss when returning to the play mode. You have to start over from the beginning to get music again..

I want to able to do this because most of the places to listen to music is jist really bad now. Specifically for mobile and on my phone. Music on KZbin on your laptop is fine because you can deal with the ads by using a adblocker, but on mobile theres basically no way to get a adblocker AND the miniplayer (essential to listening to music while making art.. or anything that is enjoyable with music such as reading or studying and stuff) so when listening to a playlist i made on my phone i have to suffer hearing so many ads. Also its not like spotify is good also, spotify became increasingly bad (started when i noticed playlists were only playing one song in the playlist, then jumping to wierd jumbled songs i didnt want, which forces you to put them all in your favorites) so thats also not a option.. But i do have a cd player. So ill just put all of my playlist on a cd or atleast how many it needs

And to add one more thing in my disc file,the songs are called (track01.cda) (track02.cda) and so on
