Being patient has been one of the biggest challenges (every time I get my hopes up and it falls through, it gets a little tougher), although it’s been an incredible learning experience. I know so much more than I did 8 months ago. Have had some bad luck with great breeders having smaller or no litters, or breeders that I decided I didn’t want to have a relationship with. But it’s worth the wait if it means having the peace of mind that I have a great relationship with the breeder and that they share my values of bettering the breed ❤️ So thankful for the BMDCA and its members and BernerGarde. These have hands down been the best resources for me! Now I just need the pup lol 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Patience is the hardest thing when you decide you want a puppy. But going through a responsible and reputable breeder will be worth it. I would ask each breeder you contact if they know other reputable breeders who may be having puppies. But keep up with the ones you connect with, it is okay to have relationships with many people. Happy to answer any questions.

Thank you so much for explaining everything! You stopped me from making a horrible mistake. While watching your video I checked the name of the breeder I was going to buy a puppy from and didn't see her name and then everything you said to watch out for was exactly what this woman was doing. Asking for deposit before puppies, basically a puppy mill. I feel so much more informed and found an actual breeder that checked all your boxes. Thank you so much!

Very good video . We have our first Bernese and she is 17 months. We are looking for a second as a pet only. Every time we get close, to many red flags come up and we don't do it. I see lots in PA online and our gut tells us we are dealing with a puppy mill. The price runs around 900-1000 and our local pet store has some for 4,200.00 I know the dogs come from a puppy mill. Your video will send us in a better direction. Thank you.

You are correct, there are MANY puppy mills in PA, the Amish are some of the worst. Here is a link to the regional club in your area, they should be able to direct you to a few reputable breeders in your area. There are some really good breeders near you! www.bmdca.org/rcc/Regional_Clubs.php?cs=masondixon Remember, with purebred dogs, you get what you pay for. And generally, it is a downpayment for the rest of the dog's life. However, going with a reputable breeder you will stack the deck in the favor of getting a healthy puppy and the support of your breeder for the life of your puppy. I would check out a couple local dog shows to meet breeders too. I am happy to answer any questions!

SitStay with Stacy Slade yep and in Ohio too. Our Leia came from an Amish breeder, we didn't know until we got there. We felt bad when we saw them and brought our Leia home. I love her, my wife can no longer stand her. She has attacked her Bostons and has a very strong prey instinct. She eats the dead mice our outside cat kills, killed a rabbit, killed a skunk and brought it in the house (that was HORRENDOUS). She doesn't really like other dogs as puppy school scarred her for life (all the puppies bum rushed her on the first day and she never recovered). She eats the Bostons poop and is a major crotch sniffer. She is 3 now but has the energy of a 6 month old puppy and is extremely stubborn. However, she is a big goofy clown. Really loves kids and ppl in general. She always wants attention and cries with a shoe in her mouth when she greats us at the door. I would definitely get another, but from a reputable breeder this time.

Stacy I love your dogs and it’s great to learn things are being done to improve health through good breeding. My daughter took in a Berner she saw from a neighbor who had him temporarily because the original owner didn’t want him and left him locked in a room all day. Well I fell in love with him, she named him Snoopy, then came back home and moved out again but I had him now to myself by myself for 2 years, and we really loved each other. We don’t know his age but looked to be adult and he was with us 5 years with some health issues, some kind of a stroke with right sided paralysis, he recovered, a year ago a stage 1 lump on the elbow, Dallas Animal Surgical, said they got it all, and to my shock and 2 months ago the old race of lost any of your dogs? I hope not. home from dx after showing some deterioration over last 6 months. It has destroyed me, he had the best temperament, he loved me one so much. I would get excited to see him after work, couldn’t wait to get home. Now I cry driving home knowing he’s not there. Have you had anything happen like this. I want another one someday, but right now I’m still processing this loss of my beautiful boy. I loved this video, great video, and the dogs look so big and so beautiful, what characters!, mine was 79 pounds all the time. What do you feed them? Thanks, Gina

I am so sorry Ashley, that is heartbreaking :( One of the reasons I created this channel was to try to help people learn that there are breeders who ARE trying to breed healthier dogs with data tracking and health testing. This is such an unhealthy breed, and so many backyard breeders are just breeding to breed with no regard for health, temperament or longevity, it is devastating for unknowing owners like yourself. Please let me know what I can do to help you, happy to walk through how to research ages and causes of death behind parents, health certifications, etc. You can start with my name in the database and go through my dogs for examples. Actually that is an older school of thought! Usually the best male for a female doesn't live with the breeder! I search high and low to find a male with good health clearances and from a pedigree different than my own. Inbreeding isn't ideal and a breeder should be going outside of their kennel/home to find the right male. Not just breeding the same male and female over and over again. I have brought in males from all over the world to breed to my girls. It's hard to find the right dog to match up health, temperament and structure wise.

I already have a Bernese that I got from a friend after she couldn't take care of him anymore (and he's such a good baby, I relate very hard to having a 100 pound lap dog) and don't intend on buying another in the near future- But it's so tempting, to see her with her two babies being absolutely trampled with love. I love having multiple Berners, however I do strongly recommend putting two years between each dog. I only had Ranger for a week before he went to his forever home. I am curious to know what the general attitude is towards things like Crisper, and the potential for editing out cancer genes, rather than trying through breeding? I have to assume there is a variance of opinion, nor am I suggesting that it is the kind of thing that can be done tomorrow, or is it a replacement for healthy breeding practices, but I am curious to know what is happening in that direction, and the general attitudes since there already seems to be a lot of work being done on the genetic side of things?

Hi Stacy! Thank you for all your informational videos, love your biggie Berners! Just lost our 130lb Odin early November to Osteosarcoma in the shoulder and being my first, I have been devastated and haven't had a tearless day yet. He was only 6.5 yrs old. Still healing, but have a breeder here in PA that certifies and breeds for temperment and longevity. While I did my best to give Odin the best care, food, exercise, vetting and supplements, I will always wonder if I should have done something different to prevent the cancer. He had two CCL surgeries in the last year, 1 in Jan 2019 and the last in July 2019. There is speculation that the metal implants used could be cancer causing, but I don't see how if it was his rear legs, the cancer was in his right front shoulder. For this upcoming new pup, I will be conferring a lot with the breeder and perhaps making some new or different choices. My question to you, and I am not asking you to promote any particular brand, but what for food do you recommend for the first puppy year and then adulthood? The dog food industry is terrible right now, and just because it's a premium or expensive food, does not mean it's the best. Many have had recalls and this whole "grain-free" thing is ridiculous. Were finding that all this stuff that is marketed as ok and healthy for your dog is now causing issues. What do you believe? If you don't want to mention brands, can you say what you look for or what to make sure is NOT in your dogs food? Thx!!! Sorry for the book!
@SitStaywithStacySlade

No worries, I am sorry for the loss of your Odin :( They leave a huge hole in our hearts when they leave. Sigh. I too lost my girl Tally after two TPLO surgeries, a c-section and spay in 18 months. There is research that supports inflammation can contribute the expression of cancer. I truly think that was what happened to my girl. And in many cases there just isn't anything we can point to that causes it to be expressed. There is a new histiocytic sarcoma test that we are doing that shares the likelihood of a dog expressing histio (the most common cancer in Berners). It is through Antagene and breeders who use the tool can see what the percentages of producing puppies with histio are. By far a best in class practice for breeders! You should ask your breeder about this test. I think food is a vast subject with many right answers. I do know that raw food does not feed cancer cells if a dog does have cancer. But as far as raising a dog, I have used Costco, Purina Pro Plan, Pet's First and others. I do think it is important to use a formula that is proven, not just sounds good to feed your dog or has a good marketing dept. :) There are also nutritionists for dogs if you really want to delve into it. Happy to share resources. Feel free to ask questions!

@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thx so much Stacy, wow! So sorry for Tally, they share an immeasurable amt of love and try to be so happy for us, they don't really let on how bad they might feel. Hugs! Will look into the the new study. Funny, this breeder has been doing this for 17 years and works with and learns from all her puppy people. I was shocked when she said she feeds Purina Puppy Chow beef & rice. 1st ingredients...corn, corn meal and chicken by products. Its been working for years, she went through a 'poisoning' for a few years with 4 Health food till she pinpointed the food as cause of issues her dogs were having. Asked our vet about food and she feeds her Lab Purina Proplan. Said Purina and Hills have been around for years and to give new pup a large breed formula for the adjustments in calcium and other stuff for proper and not too fast growth in beginning. I always thought that those were 'garbage' foods, so who knows? Will chat again! Thx and enjoy your new girl!

Thanks! I'll holler the next time I'm in PA! When you get two puppies at one time, it will be incredibly important that you do training separately and work to have the puppies rely on you for entertainment, leadership and company. It is very common for two puppies to bond with more each other rather than their humans. Make sure you are extremely consistent with potty training and basic obedience. If you can wait to get your second dog a year down the road I do recommend waiting. But otherwise good luck with your new puppies!

I'm drawn to the breed because I work from home and want an incredibly affectionate and goofy dog that's also really smart because I enjoy training for fun (I did agility and scent games with my last dog). I'm actually concerned about separation anxiety developing by the fact that I will essentially be able to spend all my time with this dog, from what you know of the breed is this likely to be an issue and what could you suggest I do to help??

Heat can be hard on them, but there are people who have Berners in hot states and have a high AC bill to keep them comfortable. :) If you have a schedule where you exercise in the early morning and late at night when it's cool then you can make it work. Good luck in your search for a good breeder, there are few good ones in your area!

SitStay with Stacy Slade you will never guess what happened yesterday- the night before I was on my Nextdoor community looking for free wood for my gardening. Then as I scrolled I noticed a full breed 8 month old Bernese for rehoming- for $150. I about died! The owner is in the oil business and has had to move several times- this time to Alaska for 6 mos and had his friend caring for him. Since he already had a dog and not a big enough home the owner agreed to let his friend re-home him. I messaged the man and he chose to re-home him to me. He came the next day after we communicated about the dog. I renamed him Bastion. He’s a beautiful fluffy coated (kind of curly on back) big pawed - quirky love-able temperament. About 100lbs - brown eyes- he played so well and careful with my little cairn terrier mix.. I could tell he had some separation anxiety yesterday with his wet poop and constant looking for the owner- standing at the door and panting a lot. I made sure to spend a lot of time with him and today his poop was solid. He’s much more at ease. Definitely can’t be outside too long because it has been humid here in Colorado Springs. I was thanking God for the miracle and the owner said they were praying for the right family. He loved my enthusiasm about adopting him.

We have a 1.5 yr. old. How often for baths do you recommend and what’s the best way to stop them from barking when they get over excited? He’s got his CGC and we continue to train him.
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 5 жыл бұрын
That is great you are training him! My guess, without seeing the situation, is he is demand barking. It is a learned behavior and you can squash it by not allowing it. Distracting him, correcting him, and refocusing on something else will stop it. I don't allow it except in excitement. Bathing is good to do every 6-8 weeks with a forced air dryer to get the dead coat out. :)
@janalaughlin2197
@janalaughlin2197 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes of course he’s demanding and we’ve tried everything you’ve mentioned to no avail. To say “don’t allow it” is overly simplistic. Our vet even said to try and ignore it when it first began but that didn’t work either. I have a professional pet dryer but vet said not to wash more than 4 times a year unless he gets into something. Also, how do I join the Berber club?

@@janalaughlin2197 yeah I get that about the barking. I personally think it is one of the hardest habits to stop once it starts. Some people use a pop can with rocks or pennies in it to shake to startle them out of barking. It may help? It's up to you on how/when you want to wash your dog; I personally wash/dry my dogs monthly too keep the dead hair to a minimum and to keep them clean. If every other month works for you, then do every other month. And at what age do you stop?
@SitStaywithStacySlade

I work on developing a great relationship with my dogs by training and doing a lot of things with them so they want to be with me! They love my treats! The short answer to your question about breeders is yes. It is hard to have an exact way to tell if someone is reputable, verifying all health clearances in Bernergarde is the best way. But you are right, over breeding female, breeding too young, too many litters, etc. would all be red flags. Standard practice would be not to breed a bitch before 2 years old, she has to have all her clearances (as does the boy) and you generally don't breed more than two heat cycles in a row and not more than 4 litters. Hope that helps!

There are some great Bernese Mountain Dog breeders in your area. Please reach out to your regional WI or MN club for their list of reputable breeders breeding for health. I am not a proponent of mixed breed dogs on purpose. Most people mixing breeds are not doing the health tests on the pares recommended by each breed's parent club. @@darceycody6133 I don't think any person breeding mixed breeds can claim health or a longer life as there aren't the records and research to prove it. Just because someone says something doesn't make it true. Berners can live to 10-12 years. Mine have lived to 9 years. But tracking health, longevity and the health and longevity of what you produce gives you the information. Any mixed breed likely doesn't have a database that tracks decades of health clearances, dates and causes of death. We do in Bernese with Bernergarde.org.

What do you know about California breeders? And also, would getting two and training them both keep them from getting seperation anxiety?
@SitStaywithStacySlade

With California I would definitely reach out to the NorCal, SoCal and Sierra West Regional Clubs as they will best be able to direct you to ethical breeders who are breeding for health. There are A LOT of puppy mills in California and it's important to be very careful, verify health clearances on the mom and dad of any litter in Bernergarde.org. If they aren't listed, move on to a breeder who cares about the health of their puppies. Taking their word for it is not good enough, they aren't reputable if you can't verify clearances (hips, elbows, heart and eyes) in Bernergarde.org. As for two puppies, no buying two at one time creates sibling syndrome and isn't fair to the puppies. It's best to wait 2 years between puppies to make sure each dog gets your undivided attention and training. No reputable breeder would place two puppies with one home.

How difficult is it to get a Bernese that doesn't have serious genetic probability of bad & expensive disease? How difficult is it to get a Bernese that will live at least 10 years? Are breeders having success in breeding out the diseases & short life?

They can. However, they also cannot. :) Some are very confident and mellow, and others are anxious and bold. It depends on the breeding and training.

I personally don't know any American breeders who would send a puppy to India. You might try some Eastern European or Chinese breeders. You can ask for hip and elbow clearances from the breeder and discuss their pedigrees for ages and causes of death.

Is having two litters a year a red flag? I know Bernese are prone to cancer but is a common trend of multiple dogs dying from the same type something to be wary of?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 5 жыл бұрын
Kathleen Billett Having two litters a year is not a red flag. Having breeding dogs whose health clearances aren’t listed in Bernergarde is. Also if a breeder only breeds the same two (male and female) dogs year after year is a red flag. Responsible breeders don’t buy a “breeding pair” and breed the same two dogs over and over. Most dogs die of cancer, the questions you should ask are, at what age and are they trying to find different pedigrees to bring in to breed for better health and what proof do they have of the dogs being more healthy.

@@SitStaywithStacySlade ARe you saying that most Bernese die of cancer or all dogs mostly die of cancer??? That seems like a red flag to me. It would be distressing to have lovable dogs & then then die of cancer at a rather young age, aside from the fact that you could spend a ton of money on the cancer (or is that a fact?)
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 2 жыл бұрын
@@lufknuht5960 Bernese die younger of cancer than most breeds. I don’t know the statistics of how all dogs die but I do know that about 60% of Bernese die of cancer and the breed average for longevity is 7-9 years. You definitely have to know what you are getting into with this breed, but from my experience, they are worth every minute I spend with them.

I had a Bernese, but we would not allow him to be on the sofa because their vertical sit posture causes height domination and I feel that when I look at this video, you have definitely got some of that going on. I don't feel this makes the best of the Bernese. They can be trained to be a lot less dominant and more patient than the persistent attention-seeking you are seeing here. Why are you letting them dominate you here?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 5 жыл бұрын
They are not dominating me, however they are definitely exhibiting attention seeking behavior. When I film they normally get treats...which I did not give them in this video. My dogs know that I am the leader and I don't mind them being close and sharing space. If you watch any of my training videos you would understand that both of these dogs understand I am the leader and love to work and respect me. If either of them were dominant over me I wouldn't let them on the couch. If they do get too excited I make them get down. For the sake of the video, I did not correct them, I wanted them part of the video. My dogs are my family and share my space, but it is clear to them I am the leader.

Hi Robin, I am not a broker for puppies, I promote establishing a relationship with a reputable breeder and purchasing a puppy bred for health. If you are buying a puppy from a breeder in the USA I would confirm health clearances of the parents in Bernergarde.org.

I don’t know any who share their health data openly on Bernergarde to verify that they are breeding for health. If I’m missing anyone, please let me know! Just because they are on social media does not make them reputable or breeding for health.

Hey! I heard these dogs aren’t great in warm states, would they be alright in a state like Texas?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 5 жыл бұрын
It is hard, they have to live inside in the air conditioning in the hot months and you would need to walk them early in the morning or late at night if it's safe. There aren't many heavy coated breeds in the southern states for this reason. It can be done, but it isn't the climate this Breed prefers. Maybe look into their cousin the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog :)

@@SitStaywithStacySlade You are right, I have a Berner and I can't walk her when it's summer because temperatures goes up to nearly 40 degrees celsius and don't drop below 30 (air temperature). I'm from continental Europe so summers are extremely hot while winters are not that cold since I'm living in flat area (no mountains). So if you're living in hotter regions don't own this type of breed or similar because it's just suffering for them.

I got mine from the amish. He's totally healthy. My friends bought from "reputable breeders" and they all have genetic problems. The more "purebred" means the LESS genetic diversity. Another thing, don't pick the puppy with the biggest paws , unless you want a huge one.

I'm glad you lucked out! That is not the case for many puppy puppies from puppy millers as they don't health test and usually don't have quality dogs to breed from, many also keep their dogs in horrendous conditions. :( The breed in general has many health issues and nothing is ever a guarantee, however if can you verify that the parents have all their health certifications in Bernergarde.org you are starting out on the right foot. Many people present themselves as "reputable" however if you do research in Bernergarde ahead of time you can find out how reputable they are and it will stack the deck in favor of a healthy puppy. You will also have a breeder who supports you through any issues and questions you may have. My phone is always on and I always answer calls from my puppy buyers. Nothing is ever absolute but I would rather err on the healthy and proven success side of things when buying a puppy and to support the people who are working hard to make this breed healthier!
