Welcome to the Ing Guides Life’s feature presentation - “How To Buy A Bike: Aero vs All-around Comparison.” This video isn’t about the details of component options or getting the best deal on a bike. There’s already plenty of videos on those subjects out there. This video is unique. This video is a guide to evaluating a bicycle’s ride feel aka, handling characteristics.
We give you a Framework Of Understanding (FOU) for bike testing. An easy to remember framework that explains the rider’s actions and the bike’s reactions. Included in this F.O.U. is a continuum of geometry that will enable you to categorize a bike as more stable or more maneuverable. Once you understand the factors involved, evaluating a bike for ride feel is easy and enjoyable.
These are the tools you need to find the right bike for you. They’re also the tools you can use to improve your bike handling skills.
If you arrived here simply because you want information on one or both of our Cannondale test bikes, you won’t be disappointed. We do an in-depth breakdown of each bike ride feel and how they compare. We also cover practical aerodynamics, weight differences, hi-mod v ballistec, and why your equipment matters. You’ll also see many great action and studio shots of each bicycle.
We’ve provided chapter links below to make navigating the video easier depending on your specific interests, but we strongly urge the viewer to take in the whole presentation first.
We really appreciate the support of our subscribers, and we strive to provide them with useful information. We hope this presentation helps you build a better understanding of bikes and how to enjoy them. If you think this content is worthwhile, please like, comment, and share, as it
helps us spread the content.
Thanks for watching. Now get out there and Enjoy Life More!!!
Additional notes:
- Special shout out to Papa Wheelies and Cannondale. You folks ROCK!!!
- The aero test bike in this video is a size 56, the all around bike is a 54.

You went above and beyond on this and I haven’t seen anyone go this in-depth on a bike consideration video and have it make sense, be entertaining, extremely informative, and can be used on basically any brand of bike.

How's this video so under-appreciated, viewed, liked? Yeah it may sound like a Cannondale infomercial at times, but the framework of understanding, the bike geometry continuum, the geometry comparisons and how those changes manifest in ride feel are universal and applicable to any bike brand you like. Highly recommend - great job Jack!

What a brilliantly made video. If you're hovering over the buy button on either of the Supersix or Systemsix bikes then this is THE best video. Balanced over a 7 day test period precise comparisons with just enough tech talk to make you understand why you're pressing the buy button on the one you want. Me: Presses buy on SystemSix. Fantastic video jack and team at ING 👍

I just stumbled onto the vid. So much great insight on what to think about in the decision making process. It's funny - there doesn't seem to be the same kind of availability these days to test ride bikes. It's an expensive prospect to have even a few of the models in any kind of range of sizes. Also the COVID situation has made bicycles a pretty hot commodity - just about everything is sold out. In depth videos like this one really help to narrow the field. I had already purchased my SystemSix prior to the release of this video. Even so, thanks for putting this video together. It helps me confirm some of the things that I was thinking, and to a certain degree validates my purchase even more! I've had it for a little over a month now and have put just a little over 1000 km on it. I absolutely love riding this bike. My longest ride so far was just over 100km. It felt great, never felt unstable or too harsh of a ride....during that ride I did about 3000 feet - just a little shy of 1km of elevation gained and obviously some descending as well. I do a good portion of my riding alone - and that played into going with a more aero bike to help me cut through the wind better when I don't have anyone to share the draft with. There are so many great bikes out there...would love to have the funds to pick up a solid all-rounder and maybe even a TT rig. But bikes being as expensive as they are - I believe this one is going to have to be the jack of all trades....and so far it is living up to every expectation.

As your fellow KZbinr, I've been wanting to make a video about my SystemSix Hi-Mod but ultimately you covered EVERYTHING in this video. Hands down the best video about the bike on KZbin. Funny thing is that you want a SystemSix for your second bike but I could make a case for the SuperSix as a second bike on my end. In all fairness though, the geometries are very close with the difference being primarily the wheelbase. So in essence, they are the same bike in many ways. In the motorcycle world, we set up the bikes for each race track (geometry etc). So the bike can feel like something completely different from track to track. With road bikes, there isn't that much adjustability (that's not a word I know) so manufacturers have to create a different frame set altogether. If you really wanted to bump up the aero profile on your SuperSix you could honestly just buy the KNOT SL 64 that come on the new SystemSixes and save another 10 watts at 0 yaw. :D I've put quite a few miles on my SystemSix and I absolutely love it. To your point about responsiveness/twitchiness, I do have trouble holding a line in crosswinds or when fatigue sets in but that is the tradeoff you pay if you need a bike to make those split second decisions without protest. With most manufacturers abandoning the aero category for all-rounders with aero features, the SystemSix may end up being the fastest road bike ever made. I wonder if Cannondale's SystemSix was the reason for Specialized throwing their chips down and anger and walking away from the Poker table (Rounders Final Hand with Matt Damon and John Malkovich). hahahaha I notice the difference in how well it holds its speed. I have a 2013 Venge Expert (10r carbon) with Enve 7.8 and Zipp aero bars so it isn't slow by any stretch. However, the SystemSix holds it's weight faster and might even accelerate a little faster as well most likely due to the Hi modulus frame. It's just a better bike all around with the Venge only being slightly more comfortable while climbing. What blows me away is that Cannondale is so far ahead of it's time at least 2 years and that's an eternity in development terms. That SuperSix had the airfoil tube shapes already long before the other manufacturers caught on. For 2020 and the foreseeable future I'm Team Cannondale.

I wish I found these videos before. With the bike shortage, I ended up with the Cervelo Caledonia. As a 5'6" male, I can fit on the 51cm but just felt so much better on the 48cm. I believe I need a longer stem so I will be seeing my fitter this week to ensure I can make this bike work. If not, I might be heading back to get the 51. Or just go with the 48 until the bike shortage gets better and I can buy a better fitted bike. I do feel pretty good that we can get this 48 working for me and I appreciate all the info in your videos.

Incredible well done! Everything from footage to knowledge to editing to content is extremely professional and flows well. I learned a bunch, will remember the BERP & GLW acronyms, and can't wait to share this video. Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! I do have a question. Towards the end you mention the Hi-Mod carbon layout which I thought had more thin carbon layers on it than the non Hi-Mod, which would add weight, but you said it has less carbon. Could you explain that a little more? Also, is Cannondale no longer putting the HM emblem on their bikes on the fork & seat stay?
@ingguidesmedia
@ingguidesmedia 4 жыл бұрын
Well, I must say this is an incredibly well written comment JF. Haha!!! Seriously though, thank you so much for your good words. We were hoping someone would appreciate the Berp and Glow framework. Since we made the video, I've personally been using it all the time now when I ride. To your question. Brother, I wish I had a better answer for you. It's been hard to speak with anyone at C-dale since the virus thing, so I don't have any inside info on the badging. I do seem to recall all the Systems using High Modulus layup. The high modulus carbon is inherently stiffer (after resin application) than the ballistec carbon. So to achieve the same stiffness profile for a given bike, more ballistec carbon material is required in the layup vs the high modulus carbon. The materials are similar weight, but you have to use more ballistec so it weighs more, but the bikes have the same stiffness. I'm not sure on the numbers of layers for either layup.

I have a 2019 SuperSix. Sometimes I think about getting a new bike. (Mine does have disc brakes and SRAM Red Etap.) Mostly so I can just get an updated frame. But, I will go to the mountains and the bike just absolutely rails. I get my weight back a little to brake hard, get low in the front, and it just carves the corners. During the Boone Gran Fondo, I was always at front with just a small handful of people at the bottom of the descents. So, I just keep my bike longer. I cannot imagine a new one being really much better except for aerodynamics. I do think the best people for the SuperSix are people like me who do long days on a bike and like to do a lot of climbing when they get the chance. The geometry being a little more forgiving would be best. I tend to make more mistakes as I get very fatigued and I think most people do. The SuperSix wouldn't require someone to be as alert and focused as the SystemSix would. Or they could be like me. I am trying to figure out how to get the SystemSix and keep my SuperSix. It will have to wait a bit as I just bought the SuperSix CX for my new gravel bike. The paint on the bike is stunning and it is absolutely amazing.

Hey Jack, awesome video, well done. The previous generation SuperSix Evo I used to ride was a great Crit only bike, moved away for the same exact reason you didn't go with the SystemSix on the maneuverability scale. The Italians in particular seem to have that balance dialed in for explosion acceleration, stiff to go fast racy geometry and stable enough to race long Grand tour events....hope we have a chance to do another comparison video in the future together.

What a great review video man. I really love about how you have singlehandedly explained all I need to know in choosing a bike. I think I would choose supersix evo myself as I am looking more towards stability, comfort and all rounder bike that can go fast on flats and hills and also suitable for long century rides. I love going up the hills/mountains and go for long rides. But may I know have you tried the CAAD13? As far as I know their geometry is basically the same but the difference is of course weight and stiffness. How would the difference would effect your choice between those two bikes if you don't care about either alu or carbon. Again thanks for the comprehensive video bro.

Aizat Mokhtar Thank you for the kind words. I haven’t ridden the CAAD13, but I’ve seen many glowing reviews. From what I can tell, it’s a great bike and a tremendous value. The carbon layup of the SSEVO makes it a highly refined race bike. You’re gonna take a bigger hit when you ride over broken pavement. Small price to pay for all the cash you could save. I’d definitely check it out if you bike shopping.

@@ingguidesmedia Hey bro. I'm back at your channel. Loving your Ask Jack Show updates. Just wanna update after reading all of the reviews, asking comments from friends, coming back to your video and doing some soul searching what bike would suit my soul, I finally decided to buy a Supersix Evo Hi-Mod 2015 Sagan edition. The reviews mentioned a very all rounder bike with great performance without sacrificing comfort. Well I know in reality Hi-Mod frames would be much more stiffer thus will take a bigger hit like u said. But I guess at my age, 32 I think I should sacrifice that and focus more on better performance rather than comfort. If not now, then when am I right? haha. Also, I got this new old stock frameset at a really good price at 1.6k USD (converted) with lifetime warranty from Singapore, which is one of the reason why I chose this frame. By the way, do you have any thoughts on how can I make this bike more compliant? I guess it should be from the height of the spacer from the handlebar, it's reach/drop and stem length? What about the seat post material and type of saddle. How do you choose your saddle? Do appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Nice review. I've had SystemSix Hi-Mod 56cm, in this black/yellow color on knot64, gp5kTL28, on my Sram Red Etap, power2max with SI cranks, weight 8kg sold the frameset and some parts, and bought SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod Rapha EF replica 54cm, with intention to make optimal aero/lightweight bike, put Sram Red Etap, SISL2 (with 4iiii) cranks and bought Roval CLX 50mm (Pzero Race TLR), put Farsports F1 handlebar, and i am on 6.8kg including speedplays, computer mount, radar mount, bottle cages. Here are some reasons: - 1.2kg weight difference is noticable for me as i am still partially a weight weenie - supersix (in 54cm) with 50mm wheels is more pleasing to eye than 56cm systemsix - supersix is softer and more stable - supersix has bigger tire clearance, i am planning to use some knobby 32mm tires for winter - i hated the black/yellow colour on that systemsix. Would i do it all again? Probably no, it was too many ebay transactions, buying selling, etc... If i have the systemsix again, i would - ditch those knot64, and build some wheelset under 1500g, save 200g - ditch power2max and buy SI or SISL2 with left side power meter, save 150g - ditch that knot cockpit, that is 600g, and buy either vision metron or farsports f1, save ~250g - boom, maximum 7.4kg and that is acceptable! If i don't have any bike and have to build new bike, i would probably build the Supersix as i have.

As a Supersix owner, I know the same problem. I like to go fast, but not just over training , but also riding the bike faster than what’s probably safe on dirty winter roads littered with pine cones, mud, and twigs. That why I actually switch to a Topstone with 40c tires for non club rides. Larger tires, more comfortable, slower top speeds, and ability to hit debris without blowing a tire.

Thanks Dean. The System has good compliance. My previous bike was an aero bike, Storck Aerfast, which was considerably more harsh on bad pavement. What’s going to beat you up on the System is the steering response. The SuperSix being more compliant and having more inherent stability will help you preserve your energy on longer/rougher rides, IMHO. I hope that helps. Jack

Hey Daan - as mentioned in another comment I recently picked up the SystemSix. I've put about 1000km (625 miles) on it and I haven't a single complaint about the comfort of this bike. I am running 25's on it which spread to around 28 due to the rim width. I haven't gone tubeless yet - but I did swap out the regular tubes for some latex tubes. Tubeless would likely be even more comfortable because you run much lower pressure. Would be great if everyone got a 7 day test ride with both bikes to make up our minds...but that just isn't possible. There are a ton of great bikes out there - these 2 are both great choices - but Canyon has some great bikes, Giant has the new 2021 models coming soon (on a plus the mid level and up Giant bikes come with fully functional power meters), Trek, Specialized, Cervelo....and of course all the European manufacturers have some great bikes as well - but they tend to drain the wallet a little more for similar level bikes.

Amazing video! Thanks so much for uploading! Actually in the middle of choosing a bike myself as a 40+ guy and from what I understood from my bikefitter is that an aero bike, maybe is not just my thing anymore...flexibility and all that. But on the other hand, I do agree on your point on the acceleration. It makes you feel young again to just know that the geometry and stiffness of the bike gives you just a whiff of that old explosiveness back. One thing I consider important - and this may sound extremely stupid - is the sound the bike makes: that systemsix just "howls" and "squeels" along so beautifully, certainly when accelerating! There's just something about an aero bike with deep rims hitting 30miles per hour + on a nice smooth pavement ;-) Oh well...the choice between klinging on to "days of distant past" or "committing to comfort"...maybe it simply boils down to ego? Love the video! One of the best of many I've been seeing lately!

Dennis Mariën DM I think your thoughtfulness on this decision will serve you well. I’m not a fitter, but I can’t see how the System would be a problem with fit. I’d get that bike on the larger size (I’m between 54 and 56) for me, whereas I went smaller w the SuperSix. If larger, you’ll have less seat post out, and can keep the steerer tube long. My issue with the System was always having to bar check the front wheel. I also wanted to get off of it around 3 hours. I can ride the SuperSix all day. Either way, you’ll have a great bike. Best, Jack PS - thanks so much for the good words. We appreciate it, a lot.

I ended up with the supersix etap after testing both of these bikes. I agree with almost all the comments in the review, the systemsix is fast, snappy, and a load of fun. Hey Josh, you got a great bike friend. I’m loving mine more each time I ride it. My hunch on the crosswind instability is that the System is inherently less stable to begin with (in a good way). Thank you so much for that Daniel. Means a lot to us. I was kicking myself for weeks for not choosing the System. Fantastic bike that’s a real hoot to ride. As time has passed, I realize I made the right choice. The SuperSix Evo is a highly refined road race bike - solid smooth and agile. For me, with only having one race bike, the straight tracking, mild manners, and suspended ride means a can focus on finding that elusive flow state, instead of constantly hot rodding around. Haha! Maybe I’m just old, but I really appreciate a more refined machine. I’m sure you’ll make the best decision for you. I’m just happy to know maybe we made it a little easier for you with our video. All the best brother.

IngGuidesLife sorry for the delay and stoked to receive your reply. Your videos are super useful and genuine. Agreed on all those points. Just got back from cycling the north coast of Mallorca which was incredible. Hired the Supersix (unfortunately didn’t get to try the Di2 model) and it was awesome....cycling is huge there and was cool seeing all the pro/ex-pro guys out. Saw a couple of Supersix’s and think I’m sold. Keep up the good work!
