I have been getting this question a lot, so I decided to make a video on how to buy one of the most important things in Japan - a bike!! Please let me know if you have any further questions about the process!

You can also buy from second-hand shops. Sometimes even the city office sells refurbished bikes for cheap. I was a grad student in Japan for many years (Hokkaido University, Kagoshima University and Tokai University), I would get hand-me down bikes from students who were leaving/graduating and one time even from the university (Kagoshima) itself. Each spring they would round up all the abandoned or illegally parked bicycles on campus, bring them all into a huge parking lot. They give the students 2 weeks to retrieve their bikes otherwise they will dispose of it (rumor has it they send them off to Nokor). I got one near the end of the 2 week grace period, thats when the owners have already retrieved theirs and the ones left are abandoned. Had to work on mine to get it into useable condition but its ok.

@@JG_Vietnam That makes me happy to hear!! Sadly, I'm selling my bike now. I'm really going to miss it when I go back to the states. There isn't much opportunity for me to bike around there :(

Do you know any resources on how to ship a bike by sea to the US? I really like the mamachari’s, esp like the Yamahas and panasonics for our little kids. It’s been impossible to find how but I thought I’d give you a shot. Big problem is the battery, it’s not allowed on planes.

I'm not familiar with it myself, but a friend of mine is looking into sending his motorcycle to the UK here shortly; I can ask him about it. I can also ask my girlfriend. She's Japanese, so she might know some resources I don't! I'll look into it and get back to you as soon as I can!

I asked around as much as I could, but nobody seemed to have any experience with shipping back to the US. I am sorry I came up fruitless for you. I did some looking around online and through some forums, but it really seems like the information is all over the place, each person with their own preferred vendor or method. I can say that it does look to be quite the expensive process. Best of luck, and sorry I was unable to be of more help!

Neat to see something from an international student at Kyushu University. I had the opportunity to go there on exchange for a semester, but they didn't offer enough courses in English to get the credits I needed. How did that work out for you? Did you learn enough Japanese beforehand?
@JakeyInJapan
@JakeyInJapan 7 ай бұрын
Ah, it's a shame you weren't able to come.. Fortunately all of my Engineering courses are in English, so thankfully I wasn't forced to learn that difficult vocabulary before I came! I definitely have been studying Japanese quite hard, though, so I think now I could manage a few courses in Japanese. I think with a language like this, though, I'm not sure I'll ever stop learning lol!

@@JakeyInJapan Haha, I feel you. I ended up coming to a different university, so I'm in the progress of finishing my program here in Japan. The moment those Japanese courses become fully Japanese you know you're truly in for it...

@@JakeyInJapan I watched some of your other videos as well, and I actually think we have the exact same bathroom, though my toilet comes with a bidet. Must be a common model for Japanese dormitories. By the way, have you heard of Huis ten Bosch? It's a recreation of a Dutch city near Kyushu (well, Japan is big, so "near" is relative). I'm from the Netherlands, so part of the reason why I was aiming for Kyushu University was so I could convince my family that Japan looks exactly the same as back home, lmao.

Ahh, no way! I wish I had a bidet in my room! I'm so jealous of you!! Yeah, the classic model of juuuust big enough hahaha You won't believe this, but I actually just went to Huis ten Bosch two weeks ago! My girlfriend took me for my birthday, so we spent a few days down there exploring the park and Sasebo! Being inside of the park was an amazing experience! I'm not too sure how much it actually looks like the Netherlands because I've never been there myself, but based on your comment, it must be a really good representation! If you get the chance, please please go! I'm sure you would get so much out of it!!

How do you find the terrain around Kyudai area? Is it very hilly or is it a breeze to cycle around? Also, roughly, what is the ratio of students who bike/drive to school? I've heard scooters under 50cc don't require a driver's liscense and can use bicycle parking. Do you think it is feasible as an international student?
@JakeyInJapan
@JakeyInJapan 7 ай бұрын
In practically every direction around campus, you're either going uphill or downhill lol! Once you get used to the hills, though, it's not too bad. Going down is the fun part! I would say the vast majority of students bike to school. There are thousands of bikes and bike parking everywhere on campus! There is far less parking for cars, but there is still a fair amount. You can park scooters in bicycle parking, but you do unfortunately need a license for
