I totally agree with you that JB is a very good option for a retirement home while still being very close to Singapore. It's got nothing to do with being patriotic or not, it's just being pragmatic with getting the best value out of our money and enjoying the best of both worlds if we have the money in our retirement years. Everyone knows that that practically everything is cheaper and much better value in affordability across the causeway. Unfortunately for most ordinary Singaporeans we are asset rich but cash poor and struggling just to make ends meet even in our old age. Retirement for many is a luxury that is out of reach or at best needs to tighten our belts to just get by day to day. There is definitely a serious problem when we need to contemplate retirement in JB in order to have a better quality of life in our old age instead of the alternative of working till we drop dead. The revelations of our ministers getting paid millions of dollars living the lifestyle of the rich and famous in palatial bungalows on humongous plots of land just add insult to the government's preaching that they are with us and having our backs. 😔😔😔

We bought two homes, a condo in KL and a plot of land in Johor. The 2 most important success factors is do a good assessment of the value of the property you wish to purchase and hire a trustworthy and competent lawyer.

What is the interest mortgage rate? From my initial calculations, about 34 percent of your payment goes to the interest, that is really money with no asset backing same as rental. So it may be financially better to rent in JB unless you pay full cash.
