It’s really hard. I remember I bought some tickets which were not the indicated for the distances I was traveling and my friend told me later that day. Luckily i wasn’t discovered by an inspector, but I think there is something like a “master” ticket which works for everything and last for a full year.

Since this video was made, the "day ticket" has changed to a 24 hour ticket, so instead of being valid for just one calendar date, it is valid for a full 24 hours
@user--Aleksandra
@user--Aleksandra 10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I understand, does this mean that if I buy a ticket on day A at 10 p.m., then it will still be valid the following day B until 10 p.m.? And is this still the case nowadays in the summer of 2023 in Berlin?
@cmartin_ok
@cmartin_ok 10 ай бұрын
@user--Aleksandra yes that is correct. Previously if you bought a day ticket at, say, 6pm, it was effectively valid only until midnight or about 6 hours but now the validity is 24 hours, same time on the day after you buy it and validate it... you can buy a few days in advance but it only becomes valid when you have it stamped in one of the special machines

I loved the Berlin public transit system in Berlin when I went to Berlin with my parents. The only thing I found frustrating about it was trying to figure out whether I needed to validate a ticket more than once. I had done research before going to Berlin, as I always do before going anywhere on vacation. I forget the website I went to but it wasn’t very clear about whether you had to validate a ticket more than once. Eventually my parents and I simply bought multiple day passes and had no trouble.

When I was in Germany I didn’t know about the stamping part until several weeks later, luckily I never got checked, and for some reason I had saved all of my past tickets and so then I had “new” ones I could technically use 😅. You may call me a cheater but at the same time I had no idea that the same ticket could be used for two hours and I always bought a couple before the two hours were done, so I’ll call that getting even the system 😜.

Lucky you. My boyfriend had an opposite problem when he came to Stuttgart. There we don't validate the tickets, they're automatically valid from the moment you buy them. He didn't know this and bought several tickets at once so he can validate them later...

There's also the ABC Zone that you have to be aware. To make it easier, if it's early in the morning and you know you are going to rely a lot with public transportation, just get the day ticket (Tageskarte), it's around €7, and this will provide you ease to not worry about mistakes, wrong way station etc as its valid until the next morning. Use this chance to learn how BVG works and then next time you'll know how to handle it.

I got my kind of tageskarte in Köln, but still. there are tiering zones (also different prices) where the ticket is valid. Last time I bought the ticket, it varies, from the ticket that is valid around inner Köln to a ticket that is valid until it reaches Aachen

buying ticket theme is hardly covered, we decided not to use tram in Berlin because we didn't find where to buy the ticket (around Alexanderplatz) and people on the street gave us completely different advices, one said we can buy ticket in the tram, another that we absolutely must have ticket before boarding.
@EasyGerman
@EasyGerman 4 жыл бұрын
You are right. That's a part we didn't cover. Usually you can buy the ticket at these machines at the stops. However many tram stops do not have machines and then there is only two choices: machines in the trams (trams are the only trains though that contain ticket machines - plus you need to know that they only take coins) or you have to buy it at a kiosk. That's probably why people told you confusing stuff. Because technically you can buy a ticket in the tram, but only if you have the ticket price available in coins. Life is COMPLICATED in Berlin 😂

Its so much easier in London - just introduce contactless payments BVG! The whole idea of validating tickets is so tedious 🙄 I remember being in Stockholm about 20 years ago and they had these silly paper tickets you had to insert into a machine on the platform that would 'clip' them. You had to clip them a certain number of times depending on how far you were travelling, I think 🤔 Anyway, it was ridiculous 😂

I had a culture shock when I first came to Berlin. I used to the transportation system in the NRW and in my first day in Berlin I wanted to use the tram. I looked around and there was no ticket machine! I asked how to buy tickets someone told from inside. Well no one told me that it's only accepting coins. And yes even before I discover such a fact trying to figure out how to buy, two controllers came and fine me 60€. I was frustrated because such information has to be very known to people, it felt like a trap! ... well I insisted after paying the fine to see where it's written that the machine is accepting only coins? and guess what? it's there in the very fine grey font 😁 . I hated Berlin at first but after a while I came to understand the charm of the city knowing that even such a trap is a part of what makes Berlin unique 😁
