If the interior has been cleaned and you can't see any mold on the seats, check the seat backs, underside, back seats, pull the back seats up if it's an suv/van, and don't forget to check the seat belts, pull them out as far as possible to see if they are moldy or if they were cleaned. The worn area on the left side of the driver's seat is fairly common. It is usually caused by part of your body(belt/waistband) rubbing that area as you get in/out of the seat(More evident with "larger" people). The seat belt usually does not rub that area when you sit in the seat to drive. Sit there and try it out. :-) I've changed so many leaky A/C evaporators over the years. Patrick Morrissey brakes and rotors are so easy to change though. You could save yourself $400+ on brakes and rotors. And you’ll be able to buy the performance pads and rotors because you saved so much. The only annoying thing is you have to jack each axel up and take each tire off unless you have two floor jacks and hopefully for safety 4 jack stands. But chrisfix has a lot of diy stuff. I watched his videos for brakes and I did it myself with no problems at all. I was quoted between $380-$650 for brakes. Not even rotors. And I save $400-600.

Excellent video, I would add just a couple things. If you can look under the car front to back in a safe manner it can reveal hidden damage. Also if it has the owners manual and the cigarette lighter works that is usually a good sign when the rest of the car checks out. It is best to check out a car when it is stone cold. That way you can,1) look at the coolant(usually) 2, check for cold start issues 3) listen for piston slap or lifters. If the owner meets you at the local mini mart, be wary. Observe and listen to them and go with your gut instinct. Please take a friend.

I like his style, very thorough. A lot of sellers hate it when you do an inspection like this- make sure they are ok with it and bring a buddy to help you so it can go fast. Avoid ads that say “no tire kickers” because they are most likely not pleasant to deal with or trying to rip you off. Make sure you are your buddy have a plan, with 2 people you can knock out an inspection and test drive in 20-30 minutes and the owner won’t be as mad about potentially wasting their time. Also I probably wouldn’t beat like hell on their floorboards without asking lol

Nice job with the video series. Alot of very useful and important info is provided here. It's not easy to get that all done effectively in a fair amount of time. Your lists are an awsome idea to help shoppers NOT make a bad purchase. Sharing that knowledge is an excellent way to use the internet. It seems some people are not mature enough to appreciate your efforts as much as a person with a basic education does. Unfortunately those individuals are not likely to bother reading this since many of the words I used contain more than five letters. But who knows maybe if they continue to view informative videos such as yours and attend school they will one day become useful members of society. Keep up the good work.

David G "It never happened to me, one guy in one place, therefore it is impossible for it to happen." Every make and model ever built wears out and can be abused. People are very capable and willing to lie, especially if money is involved. They also may not be the original owner. They may have owned it for all of two weeks, and bought it with the intention of selling it to someone else. They may have inherited it, or were given it. Take a look at my own comment I made yesterday and see what can go wrong when you don't know what to look for. Hint: Everything.

David G My car has no known major weak points. If well cared-for, it is practically indestructible. The list of repairs I have done is about twice as long as Chris's checklist, and I still have about 30% more to do before it is functionally restored. I don't care if you're buying a literal freaking tank, anything can break if it is abused or neglected.

A good way to check for body work is to look at the reflections on the car. Best is a parking lot line. If there's a spot that looks wavy, odds are it's been touched up. Keep in mind though, there are factory waves and there are body work waves. Factory waves will go along with the metal creases and curves of the car, Body work waves will look un-uniform and out of place. This is also a great way to check for dings and dents as well.

One other thing you definitely want to check is the glass and seal. I’m not sure if it’s covered in another video. But I had a car that kept getting water in the trunk. I thought it was the trunk seal and replaced it. Still leaked. I look real close to the real windshield and noticed it had been replaced with a factory original glass just put in sloppy so water was leaking. I also decided to check the the rest of the windows and found the little side window in the rear had been replaced but it was a mess and it too had been leaking.

Chris is really thorough and methodical, wish I had him along in the past, could have avoided lot of hardship. Just one thing I got to say, tire alignment is like tracking in or out of wheels, but what he is talking about when rear wheel is tilted in at the top is camber not alignment.

Thanks you so much for this series @Chris Fix. I grew up in London and am moving to the US with my fiancee. I always learn something by watching your videos, I am surprise to see in many of them so many thumbs down, the only thing I can think of why is that. I can it think of any other reason that they are jealous. I personally thank you for being very meticulous in the way you do your videos. That help us a lot to many of us. I will keep watching your videos, I like that you go right to the point, never show your face, that tell me that the video is not about you, is about what you want to teach, and that tell me that you are a good humble, modest human being. I pray for you and as God to bless you and all your love ones. Sincerely from my heart. E

Always make sure to check for burn marks on the dip stick so that you know if the owner has previously been keeping up on oil changes and keeping optimal fluid levels in there or if they've just been running the engine low on oil causing burning. That's the first thing I ever look at when I check out cars because that'll more often than not tell you what kind of life the car has lived.

Another tip i've learned from buying a used car, always look at the brake pedal on the bottom right side where your foot will make contact. If it is slightly worn then the car was driven less frequently but if it is worn down to the metal underneath then the car most likely has high mileage but that's obvious but this is just another little thing to look out for because it can also tell you how much the car was used/driven etc. Another thing is look at the body, check door jambs, rocker panels whether they're plastic or not check those for corrosion, check the lower radiator support, rear strut tower supports for rust, even the fronts for extra caution. If the car was washed enough and kept up then it's less likely to be rusty. But that is another topic. It all depends on where the car was from, the environment it's in, etc. Cheers! I hope my insight/tips also have helped future car buyers out there!

I appreciate these videos, they have some very informative information. Checking the engine, transmission, suspension etc is essential, but you've also got to remember that when you're looking at an older used car, it's not going to be perfect. It'll have dents, scratches and wear in areas due to age. Unfortunately, you're not gonna buy a 10+ year old car in perfect condition. In my opinion, if you can buy a car with a good engine and transmission, and you know it'll be able to get you to work safely, then that's all that matters, even if it does have a few marks here and there. Just make sure you get the car at a decent price, and take into consideration any repairs that need doing to the car. I know a few car dealers, and it's frustrating to hear that some of them get bad reputations because customers want a car in perfect condition, for next to no money. You wouldn't go and look at a 15 year old sofa and expect it to be in brand new condition for sale at £10. If you want a car in perfect condition, then you need to go out and buy a brand new car. Just keep in mind what you're looking at when buying a USED car.
@chrisfix10 ай бұрын
You are correct but there are also cars that are taken care of and don't have those issues, and it will cost you money to repair (even a simple ding can be $100+ to get fixed). All good things to keep in mind!

Thank you! I am so glad to have found you! I am female...do I need to say more? It became mandatory for me to learn about maintaining my car to keep from being ripped off by mechanics. I once had a '66 MGB Tourer, with dual carbs. I, fortunately, learned about keeping it in good repair myself, including adjusting the carbs whenever necessary. I'm ready to find another car - just a run about, mostly city driving, and your videos give me the confidence I need.
