For me, its all about the cut and its light dispersion. Less color leakage. To me, that looks nice even if the carat weight is small! Im a simpleton. I love a solitaire with no other stones around it. The stone will speak for itself! I'm not about the wow factor. My ring is worn to impress me and not others.

I agree with some of this. I think it is important to keep in mind the size of your girlfriend’s hand. A woman who is a size 4 has much less real estate width-wise than someone who is a size 9. A ring that looks big or overwhelms a size 4 will not overwhelm a size 9. A 1 carat actually looks nice on very slender fingers like a 3.5 or 4, but on a size 7 (my finger size) a 1 carat looks small and unimpressive because my fingers are so much bigger, almost double the size of a 4. I found that the ideal stone size for me based on my personal taste and preference is between a 2 and 3 carats. 3 carats is impressive looking on me without overwhelming my hand. For more guidance, I like the 2 to 3 carat range because that covers about half of the visible real estate on my fingers width-wise, and I personally like that amount of coverage. Even if my fiancé could afford a 5 carat ring I would not want it because I think 5 carats would look clownish on me and also be very uncomfortable and impractical. I also think it is important to mention that I was specifically looking at ovals because my fingers are also short and I think ovals elongate my fingers nicely. While I did not go for round’s they are very popular and different carat sizes look smaller on rounds. When I talk about the carat sizes I am talking about ovals. Now that you know my personal preferences, I will say that from my perspective I think someone with a size 4 finger can’t wear anything larger than a 3 carat stone and 3 carats looks insanely big, like there is no space left on the size 4 finger. As a size 7 with also short fingers, I am not sure if a size 5 would fit on my finger. A woman with a size 9 or 10 I think can rock a 5 carat stone and look great! Again this is also based on my personal preference. Please consider what your girlfriend wants and if you are really unsure ask her sister or bff for their thoughts. If she is very close with her mother her mom might also be able to help. Some women with hands like mine -short and size 7- would definitely not want a 3 carat stone because they actually want something a little daintier. There are also women with my same finger size and length who would rock a 5 carat stone because that is just what they like, and if they can get bigger they will. Let me reiterate not every woman wants the biggest stone possible. There are also certain shapes that each woman likes or doesn’t like on her hand. I think one of the best things that my boyfriend let me do is pick out my own engagement ring ( after we discussed budget of course)…..but some women may want to be surprised instead so again the most important thing to ask yourself is - what will my girlfriend like? Does she want an expensive looking ring? Does she want a n ethical ring? Does she want to be different? Some women don’t want to do the diamond engagement ring. I did but my sister does not when the time comes and my bff wanted an amethyst instead of a diamond ring. A lot of women wanted a sapphire ring with a diamond halo after Kate Middleton got engaged to Prince William. Before you worry about how expensive looking the ring is, ask yourself “What does my girlfriend like and what would she want?” And use that to guide your decisions. Assuming that she will want a traditional proposal where you surprise her with a ring (instead of letting her pick out her ring after you propose) you can start asking yourself these questions First identify if she wants a diamond or something else, then if she wants a lab grown diamond or earth-mined stone, then are ethics or sustainability important to her? Then find out what shape she wants, what her size preferences are and what her style is like ( what kinds of costume Jewelry does she wear? Is it dainty? Girly? Sophisticated? Simple or elaborate, or maybe something in-between? What metal color does she wear most often? These kinds of things can help you determine if a solitaire is her style or if she might want two side stones or maybe if she has a very glamorous sense of style she might want a pave band. And of course you go with the metal color that she likes the most. Then you can finally start thinking about making the ring look as expensive/ high quality as possible within your budget. Also remember that this ring is meant to be first and foremost a symbol of your love and not your wallet. If you are getting ready to propose she already knows the size of your wallet. It would be good to add some small meaningful touches like maybe your birthstone hidden inside the ring, or her birthstone or a nice engraved message, or other little details that won’t take up a big chunk of your budget but add some special meaning I think will make her love her ring that much more. The suggestions I just made should all be something like $100 or $200 dollars tops. Most likely one of these little personalized details is going to be $100.

I would not use shape to make the stone look expensive. I would go for what shape your girlfriend likes. Marquis are impressive looking in size but I did not like them when I tried them on because they looked terrible on my hands. They are a beautiful stone and on some hands marquis stones look amazing, but just to illustrate that you should not use shape to make the stone look expensive. Get the shape your girlfriend wants. Cut is very important to making the stone look expensive I do agree with that.

I would not go for Rose Gold to make it look vintage/ expensive. I would only buy rose gold if that is what your girlfriend likes. You should only buy the metal type that your girlfriend wears most. Women have very specific preferences about the metal type and so you have to go with your girlfriend’s metal preference.

GHI looks similar. If the cut is good, you can’t tell, if it’s isn’t an excellent cut, even higher grade will look lower in grade color. You can only tell if you have colorless diamonds next to a near colorless
