Little historical note: Panettone originated in 15th-century Milan, at the court of Duke Ludovic the Moor (the man who commissioned Leonardo’s Last Supper). Legend says that, during the preparations for a huge Christmas buffet, the cake, forgotten by mistake into the oven, almost charred. Toni, a little scullery boy, suggested the Duke’s chef to mix together what was left in the storage and prepare something. The chef agreed and, trembling, stood behind a curtain to spy on the reaction of Duke Ludovic and his guests. Everyone was enthusiastic and to the Duke, who wanted to know the name of that delicacy, the chef answered in Milanese dialect: "L'è ‘l pan del Toni" ("That's Toni's cake"). Since then, it has been called "pan de Toni” (aka. "panettone").

Hi Vincenzo, I’ve been a lover of panettone ever since I was a kid (I’m currently 41 years old). Madi Panettone was always a staple in our home around the holidays. (Maina is branded and sold as “Madi” in the United States). While I’ve tasted a number of different brands over the years, I had never participated in an official taste test…until now! My girlfriend and I loved your KZbin video, and it inspired is to set up our own version. We called it “Panettone Wars.” We had five contestants, and my final rankings (including notes) were as follows: 🥇 Madi (Maina) 🇮🇹 ➡️ 9/10 -Appearance: Pretty and yellow. Breadlike. -Aroma: Well balanced. Fresh. -Texture: Firm. Breadlike. Less moist. Balanced. -Flavor: Breadlike. Punchy fruit. Wonderfully balanced and delicious. 🥈 Balocco 🇮🇹 ➡️ 8/10 -Appearance: Pretty and yellow. Very generous with fruit. -Aroma: Subtle. Pleasant. -Texture: Medium firmness and moisture. Well balanced. -Flavor: Delicate and delicious. 🥉 Ferrara 🇮🇹 ➡️ 7/10 -Appearance: Pretty and yellow. -Aroma: Strong and very sugary. -Texture: Soft. Incredibly moist. Doughy and cakey. -Flavor: Extremely sugary, sweet and flavorful. 👎🏻 Bauli 🇮🇹 ➡️ 5/10 -Appearance: Yellow. Sparse fruit. Very breadlike. -Aroma: Fresh. Fruity. Pleasant. -Texture: Hard. Dry. Breadlike. -Flavor: Plain. Bland. Boring. 👎🏻👎🏻 Bauducco 🇧🇷 ➡️ 4/10 -Appearance: Brown. Generous fruit. Messy. -Aroma: Very sweet. Artificial. -Texture: Very soft, cakey and moist. -Flavor: Sweet. Strong. Artificial. Strange. Unsettling. My girlfriend had the same notes about each panettone, but her rankings were as follows: Ferrara at #1, followed by Balocco, Madi and Bauli, with Bauducco landing in last place. Not surprisingly, the best panettone brands are all made in Italy! We have purchased 22 boxes of panettone since December, and we’re looking forward to enjoying slices every weekend from now until July! (Timing based on the listed expiration date). Thank you for being an avid supporter of panettone, and for inspiring others to enjoy this wonderfully delicious treat!!! 🙌🏻

@@vincenzosplate Hi, Vincenzo! 😃 Great to hear from you, brother! I hope you and your family are well! My girlfriend and I enjoyed all that panettone through end of July as planned, and while we were able to successfully digest it, we were sad that “Panettone Planning Season” had come to an end. The season started early for us this year, as we enjoyed our first slices of panettone on Sunday! 🥳 Bought a record 24 boxes this year (up 2 from last year), most of which were purchased from a small business in NY (BellaItalia Food Store) that imports panettone from Italy (ones we can’t typically find in the USA). We got 10 Maina, 10 Ferrara, and 4 Balocco. The slice of Maina (our first time ever trying it) was perfect…an absolutely magical experience! 🤤 We are also excited to attend this year’s New York Panettone Festival for the first time in December. The Ferrara is quite tasty, and is sweeter than the others. It is indeed Italian made (we now avoid Brazilian panettone like the plague)! 🙅🏻♂️ For me, it’s more of a dessert (cake) panettone, as opposed to the others, which are more like the everyday (sweet bread) variety. But we still enjoy the Ferrara for breakfast. I hope you enjoy the season as much as we will!

Motta is the best my uncle used to send it from Italy every Christmas with sugared chestnuts and baci candies … there are good,ones out there but in my,opinion Motta is the best it’s a matter of taste also … and depends how old the panettone is too if it lays around too long it gets dry when that happens that’s the time to dip it in your coffee or milk …

The panettone is pretty popular in South America, even in Peru where the Italian immigration was quite small compared to the other countries. Christmas without panettone is not real Christmas. The Peruvian panettone is pretty similar to the one of Milano. Obviously, the latino panettone is a little bit sweeter than the ones of Italy.

In Poland there is a very simple way to buy Panettone - if you see any in the supermarket, you buy it because there is very small change that there will be more then one of two kinds.

❤We usually get the Balloco at Costco and have always loved it but this year I learned that there was a baker at the Broadmoore hotel that was making fresh Panattone so I thought for sure this would be a treat..... Sadly to say it was double the price, small and dry 😢 I got robbed this year. Thanks for the review !! Beggars can't be choosers in America, one day I'll get to try some of the best panettone in Italy 😩

Hi, something has 2 be said about the Panettone. Its price, at least here in Italy, is not fair since the GDO ( great organized distribution ) decided around year 2k to use it as a bait and switch dropping its price 50% off. Since then, the Panettone ( the industrial one ) started being sold cheaper than fresh bread ! That doesn't make any sense. We should keep in mind that the Panettone, even the industrial one, is a very high quality product, made following the official rules ( butter, flour, eggs, milk,... ). This makes the Panettone one of the least industrial products. Artisanal Panettone is even better ( it usually is so. In 2022 I received a precious artisanal Panettone, luxury boxing, shiny inner envelope, but completely disappointing since it was almost tasteless and dry, and it was a 40€ for 750g Panett...ino ! ) but the lowest quality industrial one, is 100 times better than all the bakery products we usually buy to have breakfast. That's why we often buy many "leftovers" sold at a bargain price on the shelves of the supermarkets, then we eat them for breakfast until spring ! 🙂 So Honey, go 4 the Balocco, the Maina, the Motta/Alemagna/Bauli, and you won't be disapponted !

No surprise, the Maina panettone in Italy has been winning the classification of industrial panettone for some years now. They are classifications drawn up by consumer associations such as Altroconsumo, therefore not biased, so if you have to choose a classic panettone with Maina, you can't go wrong

Hi, talking about industrial panettone, in december supermarkets usually sell it for a price that goes from 5-6€ to 10-12€, in january prices go 30% down. Artisanal panettone sells in shops for 25-50€ depending on the prestige of the maker and the quality of the ingredients. Artisanal panettone price doesn't drop in january. :) What r the prices in South Africa ?

I received a panettoni for Christmas when I was stationed at Vicenza, Italy. I don’t recall the brand name, but it was not very memorable. That was 1989, today I sliced into a brand name Bauducco and found it quite good. Unfortunately on the container, it is made in Brazil. I know, I know…blasphemy. Will keep looking.😊

My experience with Pannettone is very brief, but so far I too find Maina the best. I became familiar with it because it is sold by Costco. I have since tried a brand I cannot remember with a Tiramisu flavor, which was not discernable as Tiramisu (very mild) and a quite expensive cherry one, which was dry, smaller than usual, and had at best a fleeting taste of cherry and very little fruit. I tried a very expensive "Exotic Fruits" style from Rainbow Grocery, similar to Maina in style, but not as good, less fruit, (and the fruits were not at all exotic) and 3 X the price. So far I am sticking with Maina. This Christmas experiment is a pistachio flavored one, which I'm holding off on until Christmas day. And I'm buying a couple of extra Maina for January. Thanks for a great video.
@vincenzosplate Жыл бұрын
Maina is indeed a standout, and it's wonderful to hear you've found a favorite. Enjoy the Christmas experiment with the pistachio flavor, and stocking up for January is a brilliant idea. Wishing you a joyous holiday season filled with delicious moments! 🎄🍰

@@vincenzosplate I don't really have any to compare the Winternacht brand to, but I thought that it was pretty good. It seemed moist, the flavor was mild but pleasant. Plenty of raisins but the fruit was small, just flakes really. It is an Aldi house brand, and other than saying that it was imported from Italy, it did not say who made it. At $7.50US I'm quite happy with it. I would think your local Aldi might have it as well. I enjoy your videos, your chicken cacciatore has become a favorite of mine. Thanks & Happy Holidays!
