Manisha shows you how to buy real silk saris and avoid the cheap fake synthetic saris that flood Indian markets. Don't let shopkeepers trick you by knowing how to identify real handwoven and silk sarees in India.
‪@ManishaMalikIndia‬ explores the lanes of sari makers in Varanasi where India's famous Banarasi Sari is made to find the answers. You'll see exactly how saris are made and she'll tell you exactly how much artificial, art-silk, and 100% pure silk saris cost.
"I was told that 95% of the sarees in the market in Varanasi were fake. These fakes are overpriced too, so not only the artisans are running into losses but the tourists get ripped off as well. Through this video, I help you identify real silk sarees."
More info: HOW TO BUY REAL SILK SARIS IN INDIA blog.karlrock....

If you're coming to India, make sure you also watch Travel Scams playlist which will help you identify fake handicrafts and stay safe while travelling in India • India Scammers & Trave...
Here's how much Banarasi Saris cost in Varanasi, India:
Artificial Saris (viscose or other synthetic fibre) start at ₹2000 ($27).
Art-silk Saris (60% silk) start at ₹6,500 ($88).
100% Pure Saris start at ₹12,000 ($162).

Happy Gandhi Jayanti! He has been a great inspiration to Manisha and I to wear khadi and support Made in India / Swadeshi products. Gandhi started the Khadi and Swadeshi Movements during his Satyagraha against British rule. Khadi was, and still is, a symbol of nationalism and self-reliance. It makes me feel proud to wear khadi. Please support Make in India 🙏 Jai Hind. Real silk is art in itself, and, with appropriate care, you can treasure it for the rest of your life, maybe even hand it down to the next generation. These pieces of garment carry with them not only the story of those who wore them but also the story of those who toiled over the weaving machines to bring them to life. It encourages an appreciation for art and quality, and a sustainable environment as well.

As useful as it is to learn of the scammers to avoid when trying to purchase Indian arts and other goods, it was really heartening to see an example of authentic Indian artisans practicing their trade. As I work with textiles on a daily basis, I was familiar with some of the tips shown (ie. burn test) on how to tell a real silk sari from a fake, but I was totally unaware of just how intricate a process it is to weave one. Spectacular to see that in action. Thank you for the tour!

My two cents: I am not against non-silk as long as they are probably labelled not to cheat an unsuspected victim. A well to do person may afford a Rs.20000 sari but a not wealthy person could buy a Rs.2000 sari to attend a village function or festival. I have been to several silk factories and actually I have interned in a fabric dye factory in my younger days. I have bought and sold oriental rugs about 30+ years ago. A silk rug can cost 30 to 400 times that of a wool rug depending on the silk quality, thread density and country of origin. Thanks for posting this educational video.

It was great to know the ways in which we can differentiate between fake silk / art silk & real silk but a buyer should not hesitate to buy Art Silk if that's what is his/her requirement. Real silk thread is extracted by boiling the silk moths in their cocoon alive in hot water. The silk threads needed to weave one piece Saree would require killing several thousands of silk moths alone. That's too cruel a process for just a finer piece of garments. Also not everyone can afford to spend in 5 digits for Sarees. People should just make a conscious choice & choose according to their priorities rather than because this influencer said this that influencer said that etc etc.

The burn test only confirms natural fibers were used. Viscose silk mix will burn very very similar to pure silk nearly indistinguishable. So it should only be used to test that natural fiber were used. Viscose would be considered natural manmade fiber as well as rayon, ramie, tencel and a few more.
