At 00:42 I have my dates wrong! The correct dates were 2021 and 2020 - not 2001 and 2000

I have the 71 version of this motor. It has ran nearly perfectly in all those years. Bad gas was always the #1 problem. Always performed routine maintenance on it. Still has 80lbs compression. Grandson uses it now on our river. Taught him to ALWAYS go upstream and carry a paddle just in case!

Love your videos. This one especially. Between my sailboat and my tender, I've been through more small outboards in 15 years than I'd like - until I realized that I might have a weird addiction. I was buying motors that "sort of ran" and I learned to fix the basics and step up my maintenance routine until I realized that I was almost flipping motors without knowing it. You asked for stories so my last motor was a beautiful 2009 3.5HP four stroke Tohatsu that looked new but only ran with the choke on. It started right up and pee'd and I didn't see any red flags. I bought it for $300 and in one hour, replaced the crankcase oil, spark plug and gear oil. Went to clean the carb and the main jet disintegrated trying to unscrew it. Got a $150 carb from Defender and it ran perfectly. Then realized the telltale was boiling hot after running for 30 seconds. New Thermostat, running perfectly and pee'ing cold water. Splashed it and ran perfectly until it started to jump/hesitate due to a worn clutch dog. I could have gotten into that, but haven't done any lower unit work and was already tired of looking at this motor.. Ended up trading it straight up to a motor guy for a Yamaha 2HP two stroke that runs amazing. Like you said. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't.

Thank you for making this video, I don’t have much money for my hobbies having 4 kids and all so buying a new outboard is not an option for me. Never had anyone to teach me these things about an old engine so this information is invaluable to me. I bought a rare 5hp Briggs and Stratton outboard for $200 cleaned the carb and had it running great only to hit a stump and break the foot completely in half. So now I have to buy something cheap and fix it up or else I’ll be paddling to my fishing holes.

I bought an older cerca 70s 12 foot boat . With it came an 1986 Evinrude 6 hp. The previous owner tried to start it for 20 min before he finally got it to start. It ran rough and would bog down. The first thing I did at home was go over the motor. I found that both spark plugs were really old and gapped wrong. The carburetor had been adjusted too rich. And a few other minor issues. Now, it starts with one or two pulls. Runs like new.

Love those old 60s and 70s Johnson Evinrude motors. Yea you can probably get more parts for them now than ever. They have quite a following of fans.

Been there with an old Johnson 5.5 from the early 50's. Bought it out of a shed and spent a bunch of time on it. Never did get it to run, sold it cheap before I moved. Can't say I miss it!

Good advice, I always check the compression. If it's weak or one cylinder is quite a bit lower than the other, walk away.

i like to buy older boats with trailer and outboard. right the boat off.. trailer plus motor for parts=price if it runs bonus.. got a 16 ft bowrider needs floor and seats. roller trailer needs tires and one wheel bearing. 1980 140hp johnson needs a prop but compression 118 118 118 112. had it running for only 10 sec but sounded good so for 800 Canadian its a win. price of new is away more.

The challenge for some people is getting rid of the boat once they've scored a nice motor and a fixable trailer!

I once bought a 25hp 2 stroke evinrude in running condition. Found out first time I put it on the water that the previous owner ran it without oil. It ran 10 minutes then froze up solid. Major overhaul later I was in it a lot more than it was worth.

With these 2 stroke motors, as long as there is compression, you can get it to run one way or another. When I inherited my dads 5 hp Evenrude 1965 Angler , it set in the shed for 10- 15 yrs. Knowing it was running when last put away ,all I did was soaked the carb. in Seafoam about a week. Then was the time of truth. Fresh gas ( non-ethanol Gas) mixed 50:1 and Seafoam, After pulling several times, Wa La its running and pumping water.

Unfortunately, a lot of times those older motors don't have the title with them. That can add another layer of headache.

Great points// If you should get stuck with a looser and dump too much into it I've found the best thing to do is keep it and use it for a few years. Strange as that may seem. Your getting usage from the dollars you spent.. And you know what you've got .And never buy an engine you have no use for.

Some things like impellers and carb rebuild kits might still be offered by 3rd party supplies (aftermarket parts) and some of these can be decent but also some are not perfect. As far as mechanical parts, check eBay, join some facebook groups with other people who know about them and do some deep searches of part numbers.
