Many great brass players cannot buzz their lips: Michael Höltzel and Tine Thing-Helseth for example. The reason that they can still play phenomenaly is because buzzing the lips does not activate the standing wave in the instrument, and it is actually the vibration in the instrument that causes the lips to buzz. Any conscious effort on part of the player to buzz the lips is an isometric exercise and uses muscle and energy not necessary in playing the instrument. I‘m sure it can be a useful tool for learning away from the instrument, but never forget that much more muscle/energy is needed to force a buzz than needed when playing the instrument. There are some very good demonstrations available on the internet that illustrate this principle, and understanding this makes playing and note attacks so much more relaxing!!

I have started 3 days ago, but even though I can keep the sound for about 3 seconds, glissando doesn't work AT ALL . Could it be damaged instrument or I just do something wrong?

I can play pretty decently yet I can't buzz without my mouthpiece and my upper range is quite limited. I can blow my chops like pedal tones but I can't do the tightening of my lips for high. Any tips?
@seanhendricks2714
@seanhendricks2714 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel Becker don't tighten your lips too much. Push from the diaphragm and blow faster air. Playing high is like lifting weights. Build the lip muscles. Don't put too much pressure either, as that would decrease blood flow to the lips.

That's exactly how you are taught not to play brass. I started with buzzing, and for beginners it works great (sound quality isn't perfect and buzzing can be heard in the instrument), but tightening the embouchure and whistling air through with the lips offers the best sound, the whistling causes enough vibration and allows for better pitch control, then just vibrating spit into the instrument.

I never comment on these videos, but I think there is some really bad information in this video. The vibration, which could be termed buzz, is caused by free passing air through the lip (reed) and the back pressure of the horn. Teaching people to "buzz" in that tight manner is just going to lead to problems with tension and range. It's better to start blowing on a lead pipe in a relaxed manner than buzzing on a mouthpiece. You can even tell, when Paul free buzzes, it looks nothing like his setup when he plays. This is going to damage beginners and young musicians, I'd suggest taking it down.

DrBones The initial free buzzing only lasts 10 seconds so they can see what's going on before you apply a mouthpiece. Not like the student is going to do it all the time. Literally seconds. This is what I taught my first student who now, years later got a full scholarship for trombone
