With the 2023 X1, it must be done everytime you turn on the engine. To make it somewhat simpler, you can save the feature on the homescreen, without having to go through the many steps with Settings.

In my new BMW M440i, if I don't want (in Comfort mode) that the engine stop automatically for a short stop (because I have to say if, for example, I have a long red phase at the traffic lights, it doesn't bother me that the engine stops).... I simply push the gear stick to the left.

that's correct, that will work too because of bumping your stick to the left initiates sport shifting/manual mode (a form of sport mode so it won't activate auto start/stop because of keeping user in control over gear and subsequently engine)

You can also put the gear stick to Neutral (N). The engine will not stop.

For which model/year? Because the newer G chassis models will allow you to keep the engine running and car locked as long as you have comfort access. You’ll just need to get out and touch the lock sensor on the door handle (the car will beep twice letting you know it’s secure even with the engine running)

Disclaimer though, highly recommend against doing so in an enclosed parking structure or garage ( want to keep carbon monoxide production to a minimum, that’s why remote start option only runs for 15 minutes)

Correct. It automatically defaults to comfort every time you get into the vehicle which is frustrating, this is just an additional step to save you from the auto start / stop which people dislike.

@@BMWofFW Not only dislike. It causes an error message of "Transmission malfunction" when it attempts to re-start the engine, and puts the gear to "P" by itself. You'd need to press your big button to recognize it and then step on the brake, manually press the Start button to re-start, and manually shift to D in order to move your car. Without recognizing none of above worked. By the time you figure out what's going on and finish all these the traffic light turns to red already, and the cars in the back of ;you already horn like crazy. Some day some one will come down to point a gun to you if he is rushing his pregnant wife to hospital. Who invented this stupid thing?

2023 X7 doesn't have any way to deactivate it outside of coding it off as default, because they have it so it's no longer a user deactivated feature.

there are two main ways, one is the sport mode option in this video, the other is to turn off manually every time you get into the car. The only way to permanently turn it off is to code auto/start stop memory or code the standard to off instead of on. to do the coding you will need an OBD2 adapter and BIMMERCODE (that's the cheapest way to recode your car)

try bypassing the auto start stop by pressing the button. If it continues, it may not be your starter but your secondary battery for your autostartstop system. Are you getting any battery warnings? if not, be sure to bring it to your BMW service center and let them know about your current situation, they have ways to test your auto start/stop system for faults.

Once steering, engine and trans are changed to comfort (while in Sport mode) are you driving in comfort mode even thou "sport drive" shows on the instrument panel? so in essence yes... you set up sport individual to reflect comfort mode but deactivating the idle start/stop. you can toggle between the normal sport and individual by just pressing the sport button multiple times (if you have the tree modes it will toggle between Sport - Sport+ - Sport Individual)

Hi Guys, I have a bmw 530D 2021 and start/stop is ok when I am near stop sign or going to stop, but when i am doing around 50-60 Mph (90-100km/h) and the car is rolling freely engine shuts down and turns on if i hit the break or gas pedal. According to BMW here in Sweden its "normal" but it does not feel normal during the drive. I guess all the unnecessary friction will cause higher maintenance on engine. Do you have any idea for me how to shut down this function or do I do as in your video?

Believe it or not the shut down on the highway is because of how Diesel cars work… unlike normal ICE cars that run on normal combustion, the D cars rely primarily on compression to ignite the a/f mixture in the chamber. Because of this and the use of a glow plug instead of a spark plug, the engine will consistently make power upon throttle lift off… by turning off the fuel input you will allow for steady coasting and slight engine braking which is otherwise impossible in the Diesel cars. That constant power and revs is why the Jimmy valve exists on huge diesel trucks to release that pressurized compression that will otherwise ignite on its own.

I had a X3 for 7 years and it was easily to stop this annoying feature. I just changed to a 2022 X5 yesterday, and I hated such a annoying feature equipped by default to such a great driving machine. Also today under the hot sun I noticed the AC turned less cold when the engine stopped at red lights. Pretty much I felt - on and off - cool and less cool - during my driving which totally distracted me from enjoying this driving machine. I would say if I knew this ahead, I need to think twice if i should get this car.

With the X1 there are three approaches to disabling start/stop. One is to select sport mode. Another is when shifting the selector to drive to push it again. The car toggles to Low, turning off stop/start. Pushing the selector in the rear direction toggles the vehicle from Drive to Low back and forth. These two approaches change the shift points for the gears, making the car peppier. The last method is touched upon in this video: go into the menu system and find the stop/start icon. If you keep pushing on it you are offered the opportunity to add it to the shortcut menu and avoid having to look it up every time you turn the engine off. This approach does not affect the timing of gear changes. Once serves a shortcut, no matter what screen is displayed there is a short dash at the upper right, and if you touch it the shortcut menu pops up so you can see the saved stop/start icon.

Hi Matt, I have a 520d early 2014 model with the previous version of the display. The car shows “Transmission Drive moderately” error when the engine goes off with auto off enabled. This happens once every 2-3 times the engine goes off. If I turn off the auto off feature, everything is fine. What can be the trouble?

Hey, JP Here, My best guess would be gear position sensor. Can I ask a few more questions? Are you getting any power shifts in your car as the engine restarts (lights dimming or growing brighter like a power draw or brown out) also when’s the last time you checked/changed your trans oil? Since the cars engine turns off and everything stops, the low oil or maybe even reduced oil pressure in the trans upon restart/shut down could throw a code saying the trans doesn’t have enough lubrication to run efficiently. Again these are stabs in the dark without more information.

Have 2020 X5, this feature is absolutely annoying. Even if you go through this prescribed "step" and set up Sport-Individual mode, you still have to "hit" the Sport button every time you start your vehicle, OR, you hit the Auto Start-Stop button to bypass the function. The vehicle doesn't remember either action for the next time you start the vehicle, so, what the hell difference does this really do for you? You are still left with hitting a button, every time after you start the ignition, and if you "forget," you get that aggravating engine shut-off sensation, to remind you that you have an idiotic function to deal with everyday you drive an otherwise fantastic vehicle. BMW....c'mon man.

If you want, you CAN code a driving mode memory feature OR an auto start/stop memory feature. it's just not standard in the USDM, but is part of the coding of the cars for other markets.

There is not an auto save active in BMWs from the factory to remember which mode you were in when you turned off the car… if you have a coder you CAN code memory for not just your driving mode (Sport/comfort/eco) but also for the auto start stop right off the bat. However, some of the newer cars with federal emissions mandates are slowly getting rid of the car’s ability to turn off the auto start stop system, especially with the better 48V mild hybrids coming out, making the auto start stop SO seamless it’s not noticeable unless you’re looking for it. Haha i just reread… you have a PHEV so it’s not start/stop, it’s just switching between gas and electric drive. So even in sport mode that engine off is just to make yo have a more aggressive off the line feel than the mediocre low end torque of the gas motor alone. So it’s still working as designed

I recently purchased a 2024 x3 M40i and can't believe BWM refuses to provide customers an option to permanently turn of auto-stop-start. Giving customers that option would cost BMW nothing. To the contrary, I despise auto-stop-start so much, I would have paid more for the car if it had an option to permanently disable it. Instead of the "customer is always right", BMW's philosophy is that they know best.

Very annoying feature! Sitting at the light in the summer only to realize you're A/C is also not working while the vehicle is off and all the occupants are burning up. So, BMW is looking out for the environment outside but not the environment inside (the car). Dumb! Smh

How hot is your summer? 😂 and every single ice engine car that idle start stops has the same problem. It’s because the cooking system runs off pulleys connected to the rotating engine components, the only cars without it have electrically run pumps (like every electric car, or PHEV)

@BMWofFW that wasn't even close to funny... and I know how the a/c works... we're not talking about other cars... ain't this a BMW channel? Should you really be comparing yourself to other automakers? But if you want to talk about other cars, they mostly have simple buttons to disable the feature... You have to do too much to disable this feature for "every" time you turn the engine on.
