Thank you so much , I have been struggling with this for the past hours and now I totally get it , shifting my pedigree to the ones you have up is so much easier and makes me see things more clearly , a thousand thanks you saved me a lot of frustration !

I like the pace at which you work through the examples--everything is clear and easy to understand. Thanks, sir! Question: What happens with successive generations of self-pollination?
@GeneticsLessons
@GeneticsLessons 8 жыл бұрын
+Emily Conley With each generation 50% of heterozygosity would be lost and eventually after about 10 generations organisms would be nearly 100% homozygous at all loci .
@emilyconley4967

+Nikolay's Genetics Lessons So if F2 is the base population, with inbreeding coefficient F=0, then in the F3 F=1/2, in the F4 F=3/4, in F5 F=7/8, etc., and F is equivalent to the proportion of homozygous loci? Is this correct, sir?
@GeneticsLessons
@GeneticsLessons 8 жыл бұрын
The filial generation is marked with the symbol, F. The filial generations are organized in a sequence of matings such that the successive generations after a parental generation is attributed by the symbols F1 (for the first filial generation), F2 (for the second filial generation), etc. F2 would have 50% less heterozygous loci then F1, and F3 would have 50% of F2... So F would represent Homozygous loci. But you can call it increase of homozygosity or loss of heterozygosity both would be correct..

Very useful video❤. By the way these calculations are done according to Hardimans rule or Weights?
@GeneticsLessons
@GeneticsLessons Жыл бұрын
Hardiman's Rule is not applicable here - Hardiman's rule is a concept associated with the genetics of sex determination in humans. It states that in mammals with XY sex-determination systems (like humans), in the early stages of development, there is a greater mortality rate among male embryos compared to female embryos.

I'm confused for the first cousin and double first cousins, you said there were 5 nodes but there is 6 isn't there? You also calculated the answer as if it was 6 for the first cousin, I got the same answer using 6 nodes

Can I ask you how you would calculate a particular pedigree I’m having some trouble with? Im trying to calculate the inbreeding coefficient of a specific horse who is the result of two full siblings. However these two full siblings are the result of a half aunt and nephew union. Don’t know if that makes sense 😅 I would have to share the image of the pedegree

Thanks a lot! This is very helpful! I was wondering, in the first pedigree if the siblings would mate and produce another son and daughter who mate again and produce offspring would they be more inbred? By the nature of genetics it makes sense to me but using the same way to calculate coefficient of inbreeding doesn't show that. Is there a different method in that case?
@GeneticsLessons
@GeneticsLessons 8 жыл бұрын
Yes with each round of such mating there would be reduction of hetrozygocity by 50% or homiozygocity would increase by 50% which we call inbreeding.

Say the top two individuals in the full siblings pedigree have Fxy = 1/8?

Then we have to include initial inbreeding in our calculations.

@GeneticsLessons
@GeneticsLessons Жыл бұрын
What do you mean?
@jaredleicht1656
@jaredleicht1656 Жыл бұрын
@GeneticsLessons Because breeding doesn't work that way. The most inbred individual in a 3 generations pedigree will provide the highest percentage of traits found in the offspring the majority of the time. Ofcourse there is always an exception to every rule especially when considering the mystery of breeding. But it's not in equal percentages. None of it is. Mother nature is more complex. So this entire mathematical equation is nonsense.
@GeneticsLessons
@GeneticsLessons Жыл бұрын
What do you mean "highest percentage of traits"?
@jaredleicht1656
@jaredleicht1656 Жыл бұрын
@@GeneticsLessons By that question, im going to guess you studied the mathematical equation in school and haven't bred many generations of successful animals in the yard. I'm sure your math is perfect. I'm saying the entire idea of knowing the percentage of inbreeding with a mathematical equation is totally wrong because nature doesn't work in equal amounts. I'll give you another example of how it's bullshit. I can send you a 5 generation pedigree of a dog and you can calculate it and tell me the amount it's inbred. You won't see the same name appear twice and you will tell me the dog isn't inbred. Then I can pull out a longer pedigree of 12 - 15 generations and show you how every male and female in the entire pedigree go back to the same sire, and your whole equation is nonsense.

1. I have Master of Science degree in Plant physiology and Genetics. 2. My specialization is Breeding and Selection. 3. These formulas are correct and is based not on single individual calculations but on statistical data obtained from the thousands of animals. 3. Individuals may have some fluctuations in genetic information they get from each parent and what they pass to their progeny. 3. There are sophisticated programs that estimate such fluctuations - for example in Genealogy in order to estimate degree of relationship. 4. Contemporary genetic analyses are based not on the pedigree charts but on genetic markers, which will estimate COI and IBD for each locus in order to estimate inbreeding. P.S. This video shows how theoretically genetic information is passed from generation to generation and it is correct and it is a generalization.
