How to Calculate Liquid Soap Recipes using the Zero-Low Superfat Method (with SoapCalc demo)

Elly's Everyday Soap Making

2 жыл бұрын

In this video I demonstrate my simple approach to calculating liquid soap recipes using the easy zero-low superfat method. This method has worked very well for me in the basic liquid soap making I do at home for personal use. I hope it's helpful to my fellow hobby liquid soap makers! :)
Topics covered:
* What's unique about this approach compared to the recommended methods found in most liquid soap making books.
* A look at an example recipe from my soap making notebook to show how I record and formulate my liquid soap recipes.
* A demonstration of how I enter my liquid soap recipe specifications into SoapCalc to finalise my recipe with the correct oil, water and lye amounts.

I have lots more research to go, I want to be very well versed in soap making before starting. But my goal is to start making organic, eco sustainable (so no palm oil) pine tar bar soap. Gearing it for people with eczema (i have it) so I want it to be very moisturizing along with a good concentration of pine tar to help reduce need for steroid. Going to keep learning until I feel I have a good grasp on the concept as well as have developed a potential recipe fitting my needs.

Hi Ella, I’m in a loophole, binge watching your amazing videos! I live in the countryside (Italy) and I’d love to make soap using wood ash. We make our own olive oil, and we have wood and ash in abundance 😁 There are some videos on KZbin, one very interesting about using ash lye to make the paste for liquid soap then keep cooking it and make bars too but they’re quite vague about measurements. I’d love to see you trying this ingredient because you’re so precise and clear when explaining 🙏🏻

It's extremely difficult to make soap precisely with wood ash (I've seen all the videos too). I've never tried it! Would like to experiment with it one day. I could probably figure it out, but would take quite some research :)

Hi Elly Very nice video series I watched that liquid soap making video too. I had a question. Can we make cold process soap with palm oil or does it need heating. I had a recipe of 33% lye concentration, 60% palm oil, 25 % coconut oil and 15% castor oil with cold process soap bar. Bar is just made slightly soft with 5% super fat. Just is curing process. What is your opinion on this.

Hi Elly, thanks for this video! I was not coming up with the same numbers you did, even though I was using the same percentages, etc. The difference was clicking the 90% KOH box. Hi, thank you, it's quite hot here, and very rainy! We're having a very 'tropical' feeling spring this year. Lots of storms and the humidity is high! There are recipes for soap gels and different things like that in the book, but they are all soap recipes so none would perform like a regular bubble bath.

I’ve been doing cold process bar soaps and would like to start LS. 2 questions, how can I make sure my soap is thicker more like a bath gel and also, what’s the shelf life of the LS and are there any preservatives that should/could be used?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, it really depends on the oils you use. Fragrance oils and essential oils can really thicken liquid soap too! It's a bit challenging, but it can be done. I can highly recommend the Jackie Thompson book I have linked in the description box. It has shower gel soap recipes. The shelf life varies on lots of things, but my LS lasts for years. I have never used a preservative for my personal use batches.
@GraymatterPix

Great stuff. My first soap was your hot process liquid soap recipe and then I went straight "off-piste" and started experimenting with superfat and other oils. I fancy trying bar soap next so I can increase the superfat (1% in my first soap left my hands super dry feeling, 3% in my second soap was good but it then won't hold a fragrance oil) but I have a question... why would I choose hot process over cold process for bar soap? I watched your video from a while back and there doesn't seem to be much advantage with hot process for bars, I wonder if you have discovered more since?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that's such a great question. I've never had much luck with CP liquid soap, but for bars there are some definite advantages for both methods. I must do a video on this! A bit long to explain here. I'm starting some 'viewer questions' videos soon - you're top of my list!!

I've seen video from Brazil. Their soap must be very expensive, so they home cook soap in each household. Very interesting, but they use 1 liter of oil, mix it with 1 liter of alcohol, pour there 350g of caustic soda mixed with 350ml of water, 100g of sugar instead of glycerine, mix it by spatula for 30 min until the mixture becomes like a thick white paste. Then adding 2l of boiling water, then adding slowly about 10liters of tap water, mixing it all. In the end they add 1 cup of chlorine solution for clear soap. What can you say about it?

Hi I have a question; if I want to add breast milk to a soap how can I do it in order to don’t make it grow bacteria thank you in advance I really enjoy your videos!

Hi, I'm not sure about liquid soap made with milk, but with bar soap it's fine. Plenty of people make bar soap with other mammal's milk with no preservative and they keep very well. Soap is high pH and is naturally preserving.

Good Morning Ella, can you record a sea moss soap video? Thanks in advance

Hi Lisa, I am not very experienced with sea moss. Somebody sent me some once but I checked it recently and it had gone bad/mouldy. I'd have to do a bit more research on that topic!

They sent me dried sea moss. It was nice but I may not have stored it in a dry enough place.

I only use the cooking method Kareemah. I've tried cold process liquid soap method but it never works very well for me. It's too hit and miss for me!

Would you be willing to read something for me & give your opinion on the addition of animal milk in liquid soap? I respect your knowledge of the calculation procedure and I am wanting to know if my theory could be sound. I mean no offense, I am looking for your opinion on what I believe to be correct but I do not have enough experience with the subject and you are the most knowledgeable individual I have ever found.
