i may be wrong but i have found a rounding error as 23797.8 divided by 100 is 237.978 which rounds to 237.98 not 237.99
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 8 жыл бұрын
When you are rounding to 2 decimal places, you need to see what number the 3rd decimal place is. If this 3rd decimal place is 5 or higher, it will round the second decimal place UP. So looking at 237.978... the 3rd decimal place is 8 which will therefore round the 7 up. So to 2 decimal places, this number rounds to 237.98. Whereas if it had been 237.974 then the number would round to 237.974 because '4' is less than '5' and so does not round the second decimal place up. I hope that helps!!

As stupid as it may sound but since I am preparing to lecture kids and they might ask this question which I don't have the answer to.. How have scientists/Chemists been able to tell the exact percentage of Isotopes of a particular Element? Like with Cl there are 27%Cl 35 and 25% Cl 37? and Others..
@theramblingreviewer5150
@theramblingreviewer5150 7 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the exact same thing. It's probably not an exact estimate, but an average over many different environments. So, they probably take samples from one place find the percentage, go to another place find the percentage and do this a hell of a lot of times until they have an average. That's just a guess though, perhaps I am wrong.

I'm very sorry to point that out but this is not entirely accurate explanation. It could be easily verified by comparison to the Periodic Table data. Using method you presented I got chlorine relative atomic mass 35.50. Periodic Table says ~35.45 You cannot simply add nucleons and multiply them by abundance in Earth's crust. When protons and neutrons combine to form atomic nucleus a small part of mass is converted to nuclear binding energy. However, we cannot predict the amount of nuclear binding energy just by counting the numbers of protons and neutrons. It must be experimentally determined using a mass spectrometer. In relative atomic mass, we measure the mass of an atom using C-12 as reference. So why are we using a formula to calculate the atomic mass? Also what is the difference between average and relative atomic mass?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 3 жыл бұрын
Relative and average atomic mass are closely related. The relative atomic mass is assumed to be correct for most of the planet Earth's crust and is a standardised number. An average atomic mass is only true for a given sample, as this number can vary over geologically long periods of time and certain processes which change isotopic ratios. sciencing.com/calculate-subatomic-particles-8221603.html

is relative atomic mass and average atomic mass same?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 4 жыл бұрын
No, they are not the same thing. Relative atomic mass is the usual term for the atomic weight of an element in its natural state (average of isotopic masses). Average atomic mass applies to a specific sample - e.g. lead ores which derive from different decay chains of previously radioactive elements have different average atomic masses because their isotopic ratios are different - and you can tell from where a lead sample was extracted from the average atomic mass of that particular sample. In other words, relative atomic mass is a standardized number that's assumed to be correct under most circumstances, while average atomic mass is only true for a specific sample.

At 1:22 how did you know that chlorine 35 is 75% and chlorine 37 is 25%
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 3 жыл бұрын
There is a clever machine called a mass spectrometer which fires individual charged atoms (in our case it is chlorine ions) through an electromagnetic field. The higher the charge on the ion, the more it gets bent round; and the more massive it is, the less it gets bent in the field. In this way we know that naturally occurring chlorine is made of 25% 37 and 75% of 35 giving it an average atomic mass of 35.5
