Partially correct, this will apply when the load is in the center of the bolt, but if your load is offset from the bolt, then the equation becomes more complicated because you need to find the bolt pattern centroid.

Nice explanation. In the old AISC allowance stress design, you could just look up the tension or shear allowables for any size bolt. But this is a good refresher as to how those values are derived. 👍

@orfeaspapaioannou27552 жыл бұрын
k2 is a coefficient that takes values k2 = 0.63 for countersunk bolts or k2 = 0.9 otherwise. (EN1993-1-8 Table 3.4)

In that case (general case), you have to make use of the Bolt interaction curve - Combined shear and tension Fv,Ed / Fv,Rd + (Ft,Ed / Ft,Rd) / 1.4 ≤ 1.0

Why not we use M14 bolt instead of M16? Tension area of M14 bolt is 115 mm^2 which is higher than 109mm^2

Highly over simplified formula! What is the bolt pretension?
@er.lalitbhatt73433 жыл бұрын
So, while calculating the bolt sizes and it's adequacy don't we need to check the bolt against Horizontal Shear force at base level ? It may be critical considering shear force too. What's your view regarding it. Please elaborate. Thank you
@StructuralEngineerCalcs3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment.This example is merely to explain how to work out the bolt size which is mainly subjected to uplift. The shear force has not been considered in this example however the worst case dictates the design. If there is a shear force you would have to include this in your design!

Good Video, but what does this mean for bending moments and concrete? Its very simple to calculate the diameter, but thats not enough.
@StructuralEngineerCalcs2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! You are correct that calculating the diameter of the holding down bolts is not enough to ensure the stability & strength of a structure. In addition to the diameter of the bolts, it is also important to consider the bending moments & concrete in the design of a structure. We just uploaded a new video that might be of interest to you. It covers the importance of holding down bolts in construction & how to calculate their tension capacity & pull-out resistance. We hope you find it helpful and informative. Thanks for watching!

Interesting tutorial, thanks for sharing. BTW, if you struggle with designing a steel base plate with anchors in a fully reinforced concrete footing, I recently noticed that IDEA StatiCa can already design both parts. And that includes the actual behavior of the anchors in the concrete pad. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXPTeYGIiaaFqbs
