If I replace the whole turbo do I have to do any sort of calibration? If I pay a shop to recalibrate it I might as well just replace the whole thing if I can. And also when you say drain the coolant how did you do that? Like the whole truck coolant system of is there a supply line on the turbo you can take of?

great Video...so I am getting engine codes indicating my actuator is failing. The tech believes that it is electrical as function is intermittent. I am wondering how much of this i can do at home, less not having the snap on computer that you do....any tips?? I was looking to go to pick a part as factory it is 4000.00 for the actuator

Our company rebuild actuators. These actuators have defective hardware and firmware. You may send us your actuator for rebuild. But anyway you must calibrate your actuator during installation.

In this case, you should remove turbine housing and check the nozzle ring and shroud plate. There you'll see the exact problem.

I could hear noise in exhaust , like a chatter. It was the actuator. It would chatter and not spin at times. Noticed it with key on and not running . Not sure what it is doing running. Have the 3 codes

2017 2500 all stock, I'm on my 3rd actuator. Tow/hauls fine with no problem but at stops/red light the truck would stall. The turbo gets loud and deep then stalls, I can put it in neutral give it a little bit of gas and the truck will clear its self up? Help pls.

Fairly easy job is you have a several thousand dollars Snap-on scan tool lol. Genos garage sells a really nice Billet aluminium one that calibrates itself. No need for a calibration tool

The coolant goes inside the actuator and damages the electronic board.

We produce silicone gaskets, but they go with our actuators only. Regular rubber gaskets you can find on ebay- there are many offers.

Usually, it's the actuator's problem, but one more reason the turbo has damaged vanes or shroud plate, so vanes don't go all the way to the closed position. Cummins does not have a diagnostic tool for this problem. If you can bring your truck to our office- we'll be able to diagnose the problem. Otherwise, you should remove the actuator and check your turbo first.

You kind of lost me pairing the actuator with the arm. I mean does the actuator have a limited range of motion? Do I have to hit an exact tooth when bolting the actuator to the turbo?

You don't have to find exact tooth. Just bolt the actuator to the turbo and calibrate it. Actuator's gear does not have limit of motion.

I have a 2014 limited Laramie Longhorn and I have got the p003A code on my scanner a couple times now and noticed my truck taken longer to shift in 5th 6th could this be my actuator?

P003A trouble code indicates the issue with turbo or actuator. Unfortunately, Cummins does not have any diagnostic to find the problem exactly so you should take the actuator off and check the turbo. If the turbo is sticky- it may be a problem with shifts. If you are local- you can bring your truck to our office and we'll be able to diagnose the issue with our tool.

Drill small hole (2mm or so) in the side of the bolt, then use 5,7-5,8mm drill bit.

It's common problem. Put some grease on bolts during installation to avoid this problem in a future.

I snapped inner shape of the bolt today, so I had to remove electric part cover, with 27 5 point socket, then used wise grips, since after cover removal you get some clearance to get on the bolt, I grinded wise grip's top noze a bit so it wont damage exposed gear.

Is it just me or am I confused about this “cleaning process”. You cleaned the mating surfaces of the actuator and turbo how is this going to help? I’m getting Intermittent turbo codes and was thinking about checking the veins and actuator but don’t see how this will help me

This video was created to show how to replace the actuator and check the turbo. In your case, some inner electronic components getting bad so you should rebuild or replace the actuator. It's a common problem HE300VG actuators.

You should drain 3-4 gallons of the coolant so that its level is slightly below the actuator to avoid getting the coolant inside the actuator during installation.

I just did my first turbocharger actuator yesterday and instead of draining coolant I just clamped the upper hose with vice grips wrapped up with electrical tape. I only lost a little bit of coolant when I took the actuator off.

AlphaOBD will work from what I've read and it's likely the cheapest option, even if you don't already own an android device or an OBD2 bluetooth adapter. I'd recommend OBDLink MX for the OBD2 reader. If you got this code it may be a turbo problem too. You should take the actuator off and check the turbo (see another our video how to check a turbo), then try to calibrate the actuator again.
