My 15 year old dog has recently became diabetic, and has cataract’s. My heart is broken. I feel so bad for her that she can’t navigate as she used to and doesn’t seem to enjoy looking out the car window anymore. She used to look out the car window for 3 hrs straight on road trips. Thank you so much. God bless you. This is very helpful.🙏🏼♥️

I have three dogs myself and one of them just got the same issue as yours Became diabetic and lost his sight over night due to cataracts. He is moving very slow but we got him to still enjoy the car rides and looking out the window but letting him now where he is. We use a different tone of voice and say squirll to make him get excited to see an animal. It took time but now even tho he can’t see he enjoys the car again and having his head out the window. It is heartbreaking watching him go thru this a loose his sight over night but we have a vet visit this week and I’m hoping they will be able to help in some way

I have a blind shih tzu too. She's 14 and lost her eyesight to cataracts and glaucoma About 2 years ago. She adapted well, and sometimes I notice her slowly approaching something, touching her nose to it very lightly, kinda zigzagging from thing to thing in order to navigate. She prefers when a lot of things are in the room... Like a trail... She feels more confident. Every blind dog is different, but they all figure out what suits them best and they let you know. Blind dogs are still happy dogs.

So im hoping to take her out this week and see how she does outside, she does fine inside ,so we'll see . Thank you so much it breaks our hearts everyday, and we took her to the biggest top notch Specialist for her eyes and said there really isnt much that could be done. She take drops 2x a day to keep her muscle contracted bc a cataract burst and it went behind the eye and the med keeps it from moving , pardon my writing its bc of my tears. Thanks again i wish your fur baby Reese a bright future .

My 6 yr old Maltishit is blind. We found out for sure from Opthamologist last week. She's had 2 accidents in the house and she's been 100% potty trained with no accidents for years. She's on steroids and that may be part of it. She's drinking a lot of water. My question to you is about the washable potty pads... how did you train Reese to pee on a potty pad inside at an older age? Zoë won't even go on the fake green grass they have at airport terminals because she knows she's "inside"..... How did you re-train an older dog to pee on a pad? Thanks for great video !!!
@thesunnyedge4 жыл бұрын
For Zoe, I would limit her access to the house by keeping her in one room/area with the pee pads. If she pees on the floor other than the pee pad I would clean it up right away so that she doesn’t find the scent later. You could even wipe up some of it on to her pee pad so that the scent is on there instead. Reese has been using pee pads since she was a puppy, but any time we’re in a new environment she has to relearn where the pads are and that takes time, sometimes up to a week. For our blind dogs they especially rely on scent and yes, the steroids can even make it more challenging (that happened with Reese when she was on steroids too). Dogs are smart though and with enough consistency they start to “get it.” Hope this helps!

I’m sorry to hear about your dog’s cataracts! Hopefully your pup is doing ok and adjusting. My dog has been potty trained since she was a puppy and has always relied heavily on scent and so I don’t feel as though that aspect has changed too much since she went blind. Hi there. I rescued an 8 yr old shih tzu a month ago after her owner unexpectedly passed away. When.i adopted her, I was told she had early stage cataracts .... Unfortunately I had not been able to get her a vet appointment to get her checked out until now. She goes this Tuesday. I know she's blind but I'm still dreading hearing the vet say those words to me.m In the last few days I have seen the cataracts get worse and worse . Now her entire eye is as lost covered by cataract It broke my heart and I so bed for hrs Having immense guilt. I'm so scared of what quality of life will be going forward ( It's like deja Vu .. my previous shih tzu lost her sight in 2020. She had gone on for complete tooth extraction and 2 days later she had severe corneal ulcers in both eyes ( because the staff did not closer her eyes during her surgery They ulcerated for contain exposure to bright lights for an hour.... A week after she was diagnosed with ulcers I found out she was completely blind It was a nightmare experience .she was never able to adjust to her new reality I carried her everywhere she passed away on Oct 2021 . Now im watching the precious baby's eyes go from beautiful brown to cloudy. I'm left dumbfounded though as she walks by herself fine .. and she runs upstairs by herself not skipping a beat ( I love in an apartment complex with several pairs of stairs going to their unit . She knows which stairs are hers . Thank you for sharing your tips. Your precious baby looks happy and well adjusted I subscribed and look forward to seeing any future episodes about this topic.

I looked in to one initially when she went blind but since she adapted so well I never actually tried one on her. She really doesn’t bump in to much at all anymore. I think with her being blind for the past 4 years and her older age (she’s now 11) she has slowed down and become much more cautious in unfamiliar environments.

Personality-wise I’d say she stayed the same but she’s definitely more mellow now. I think part of that can be attributed to the fact that she’s trying not to bump in to things when she moves around.

Do her eyes react to a flashlight?

No, they have been nonreactive since she went blind.

My dog went blind few days ago, it happend due to the kidneys problem, it happend suddenly one day he could see and the second day he was blind, he is also a Shiz tzu 10 years old, I can't deal with that I cry all the time when I see him struggling how to move around the house ... please can you tell me when it's going to be ok, the thing is he was such a happy dog always in a rush.... now he looks like he isn't here anymore just the body, but I dont see him .....

Awhhh he’s probably very frightened right now since this is all so new to him. Give him lots of love and attention right now, let him follow your voice around rooms and down hallways so he starts to learn how to navigate on his own and where things are at. Like I said in the video, keep furniture, his food/water in the same place so that he learns where they are at. Try to make sure he doesn’t bump in to things since that will set him back with being confident while walking. When my dog is in a new environment and bumps in to things she automatically slows down because she’s afraid of doing it again. With consistency he will learn to rely on scent and sounds instead of eyesight. Are his kidney problems new or old? That could be making him feel much less lively too. What does your vet say?

@@thesunnyedge thank you for your replay... it is a new problem,it started last week, he was in a very bad condition, the vet said that he has very low probability to live, so I'm glad and happy that he is with me, he is recovering, the blood tests came a lot better today than the day before so he will make it, but the blindness make things so much worse... I know that he knows that I'm crying, but I can't help it ...

@@fuwamova Awwwe no I get it, it’s so hard to watch our fur babies when they’re sick or suffering. When my dog was sick I spent 4 days on the floor with her crying off and on. I hope your pup continues to improve! 🙏🏻

So you spend lots of money on some mysterious illness? My dog is 14 and just went blind. My vet said cataract. Normal for old dogs. Find a vet that doesn't break your wallet

At the time she was completely healthy and only 7.5 years old so yes, I spent a lot of money to have her diagnosed correctly. Now she is 12 and when she relapses I know what is causing her symptoms and so her treatment plan/medications do not cost near as much. Thank you for your comment!
