This is a very heartwarming video. I can tell that you deeply care about dogs which I LOVE. I appreciate all your tips. I can for sure agree that diet is essential in keeping your senior dog healthy. I also make sure to give my 9 year old yorkie a balanced breed multivitamin which has been helping a lot with his joint pain!

Diabetes is Reversible. Grains break down to sugars, please research the grain free diet. I am sold on grain free. Grains also contain pesticides like glyphosate. Best to both of you!

This is such a great video, thank you! My old puggle is 13 in a few weeks, and it has been quite shocking how much he has aged recently. He has had arthritis for a few years now but we have treated it with medication. Now he has been developing signs of cognitive dysfunction, his bloodwork is normal so the vet can't explain the symptoms in another way as of yet. Definitely going to look into some interactive toys to see if he will engage.

Dog's genetics are just that, genetics, some of these are nice but other are not, accept things as they are.

@@carlosmcollignon8672 He ended up having terminal cancer, so I’m glad I didn’t “accept things how they are” and took him to the vet. He passed away about a month after I commented this but we weren’t aware of the extent then. it was very aggressive and in his brain.

I wanted to ask for a senior dog how do you help them gain weight gradually? I am about to adopt a 10 year old Romania rescue and due to the neglect he experienced he is very underweight.

I'd say it is worth getting him checked over to ensure that there is no underlying cause for his condition other than a lack of food, and also to introduce him to your vet so they can help monitor his progress. Generally I would suggest a high quality diet, feeding smaller amounts more often, start off feeding the total daily amount equal to what his ideal weight should be and the change this as needed based on how his weight changes

My 13yr old Lab has now got cataracts but has a little vision. She also has arthritis in her legs. She used be able to walk up the ramp into my car for walks but now flatly refuses to. She will eventually go up the 3 back steps into my house but, is anxious about doing so, she appears to have difficulty seeing the first step. So now going for walks does not involve the car. She is too heavy to lift. Any ideas on how to solve the fear/anxiety of walking up/down the car ramp. It would be nice to take her out for a more interesting walk.

@@OurPetsHealth thank you buddy 👍..my dogs are my life..in my profile picture is bigfoot on the left side he is a pit bull mixed and he just turned 13 last month and isn't doing well he has severe arthritis and now cancer in his neck..I'm keeping him comfortable with meds and good days and bad. Little Arnold is on the right side he is a beagle and he was 9 years old on Christmas day past. He is doing good but he is getting overweight and I will have to get him on a diet. Thanks for the informative video buddy 👍.

Thanks for this informative video about how to care for my aging dog. Our mutt pup is 12 years old (15lb mix breed). She has recently started drinking more water and has been vomiting periodically. Does this warrant a run to the Vet? Or should we try changing her to a senior diet to see if this changes her symptoms? Thank you Dr Alex.

Thanks! I would definitely get her checked over by your vet and if possible take a urine sample with you. Drinking more is often one of the first signs something is not quite right.

Ok thanks for the advice. She saw the vet today and they gave her some medication to see if that stops the vomiting and diarrhea as well as a bland diet for the next week.

Hi Great info by the way. Glad I was able to find your channel. I do have a question. I have a 15 almost 16 yr old Maltipoo that has been raising his back leg a bit off the floor. My long time vet attributes everything to old age but I feel there's more. I have been giving him Glucosamine for the last few months and he does seem to do better with energy as he likes to run after taking a potty back into the house for a treat, but some days he still raise his hind leg with a small tremble or if he's played more than a few minutes with fetching, his hind leg will shake so we stop. I also started CDB drops which really seem to help his leg out. I am still wondering though if it could be a hip problem or a ligament issue. I'm ready to get second opinions on everything at this moment but do know where to start. Thanks in advance for any info you may be able to offer.

I tend to say old age in itself is not a disease. X-rays and joint manipulation may well be the next logical step if your dog is a suitable sedation or anaesthetic candidate. pain killers might be another option with blood testing if needed. There's no harm with a second opinion or just talking to your vet about wanting to explore the possibility of reaching a specific diagnosos

We have a very old english bulldog, we adopted him being a 1 year old adult, now he has skin disease and has only about 30% of his eyesight, otherwise he is healthy, however a year ago he had stones in his bladder and penis going thorough great pain, instead of putting him to sleep we decided to give a shot at surgery, bladder surgery was fine but because of tissues issues the vet didn't put stitches in his penis, It was a mess for about 20 days, at the begining of the recovery he used to pee like a female, but eventually the recovery as 100%. He is a couch potato except when he percieves I'm taking him for his daily walk, he actually jumps like a puppy, he walks beside me without the leash which is used only for crossing streets, every 10 meters he just stops to sniff or pee and I just wait. He hates motorbikes and when I see one coming I put on him the leash immediately, if he has the chance, very seldom, he fights other male dogs an while his bite is very weak he is very pain tolerant and he has never, never shown character weakness He is living his sunset years with dignity an he is a happy dog, and I´m a happy master. Eventually he is going away, we all will.
