💜💜💜 Ive started a VSOH from a 4"pot with 4 butterfly cuttings 2 years ago. And now I have so many that Im thinking to sell them 😁. They need a lot of light to grow thick and fast. I water mine sparingly now because they have big tubers but when I start i kept them moist or water atleast once a week. Ive had a good luck even my first time on this plant but you just need to get the right soil,light and watering. Love string plants💗

Lovely plant. I'm propagating the original and variegated SOH. It's summer here in NZ, so I have them on a windowsill in afternoon sun and spritz them everyday. They're loving it. Note to self. Stop watering so much in winter. ❤ this vlog. Thanks Nick!

Love this one. Because it can be så long- does the top soil need as much light as the strings? Or maybe the top need the most light?

I finally got one 2 weeks ago! Even though it's the unvarigated version in my region it is really hard to get a beautiful specimen for a reasonable price. The only issue I have is that it came in a plastic hanging planter and it is soaked with water! Even now, 2 weeks later, when I touch it it is really really moist. I really don't want to repot it at this point because it's obviously still aclimating to my home. I put it under my growlight to give it enough light during cloudy dark season, but I'm pretty worried about it. Also, totally not on topic: I love that you always give information about the plants being toxic to pets. I would really appreciate a sort of 'no-go' plants video, where you could maybe point out which plants you should absolutely keep away from your pets.

I agree! I really appreciate how Nick always makes sure to include information about pet safety and whether it’s toxic or not to pets. And absolutely, yes!!- a video specifically about which plants are a “no-go” (aka toxic plants…such as those that are fatal if ingested and those that are not fatal but do cause health problems like severe abdominal or skin irritation). I think that is a great idea for a video. I believe he already has at least one video about how to keep your cats/pets and plants safe from each other, but I do think that a video about strictly plants that are extremely toxic to pets would be very beneficial to all of his subscribers, especially newbie plant parents who are just starting out.

Hi Nick! This was very helpful. I have cuttings of the green SOH and will need to pot them up. I have in water and a couple in sphagnum moss. I would love to find the variegated one. Thank you so much for sharing!

As long as you don't douse it with pesticides, the leaves and tubers are edible. I really like the raw leaves and the tubers boiled for ten minutes are very tasty. I have never had a full meal of them, just a little nibble occasonially. POWO at Kew prefers the name _Ceropegia woodii_ rather than _Ceropegia linearis_ subsp. _woodii_ which is good enough for me. Please note my little picture to the left, I really like this plant.

Hi Nick If you cut a bunch of reverted leaves to make a new pot, would that new pot stay green or would it eventually become variegated again?

I just bought a Variegated string of hearts (or as I call her, my Valentine plant). She is a 2 inch, so far she's alive and thriving. Now, I only have a west facing window. I hate my curtains open though, I am quite sensitive to extremely bright light. I leave the curtains open from 10:30-2:30. I planted her in a little shampaine glass with mixed fertilizer, I didn't give her a lot of water because I didn't want to put her in shock. Would you say I'm doing everything well??

I wish I could get my hands on a variegated string of hearts!!! Even a non variegated plant would be lovely to have! I have a decent amount of hanging plants…the only ones I have that are in the string-of’s category are the fish hooks (senecio radicans, I think?). I have big dreams of having a living curtain filled with beautiful string-of plants along with other lush trailing plants😍 …maybe one day it will become reality! 🙏🏻 🌱🌿🍃🪴💚

I've just bought a variegated one at my local garden store, in Germany tho. It is tiny, has like 4 strings right now, in a small pot, about 4 centimetres in diameter. But it only costed 3€!

Mine started falling off and needed water they squeezed into tacos and lost so many. I purchased December wasn’t sure about watering so just water sprayed roots. And 2 weeks later they all taco’d I went to water and lost so many hearts. I don’t know if it’s because it’s acclimating new environment or they were that thirst. Pot felt wet 2 weeks ago when purchased. Ughhh I’m learning.

I recently purchased a string of turtles and I figured that because it has more succulent like leaves that I would water less but online it says to keep the soil moist? I’m really wanting to keep it alive. Would you be able to do a video on multiple string of plants?

The rosary vine is one of my favorite plants. I have several of the green variety, one is close to 20 years old. About two years ago I finally got a variegated one. It has done well under a grow light, grows slower than the green - and is outside for the summer. I was looking at the new growth on it this week, and it’s NOT variegated. It’s in bright light all day, with direct light for a few hours in the afternoon. Kind of disappointing, especially considering what I paid for it.

If I cut the stem behind the tuber can I immediately plant it back into the soil without water propagating?
@DesireeStamat

Yes. There are many people who do the butterfly method directly into soil. I use an open plastic bag over the planter to retain moisture while the cuttings are rooting.

Completely unsuitable for persons with O.C.D! They will try to untangle and put the strings in order. Trust me, I know! ☺ I wanted to ask about watering, I water the plant after checking with a moisture meter and let the plant to complete drain. But after watering, it gets a gray overlayering on the soil surface. I let Any tip?
