Your taco test has been SO HELPFUL TO ME!!! I fell in love with peperomia obtusafolia about 6 months ago! I got 2 little plants and I've had to trim them a LOT because when the leaves touch, they begin growing wonky- and it just grows so fast! Every time I trimmed it, I put the leaf or stem into dirt and they all rooted fast and grown little baby shoots! So I'm going to have lots of babies to give my friends! I recently trimmed a larger stem and put it in water with a pothos cutting and within a week and a half I had tons of roots! I've had a 100% success rate propagating! This is 2nd place (to my golden pothos) when it comes to easy care, fast growth, and fast propagation.

I never, ever repot into ceramic or other pots. All of my plants are in plastic pots set inside a cache pot. That way I can keep my favourite pots where I want them and change out the plants any time, plus I bottom water all, so it's way easier. I repot up into bigger plastic pots. I just don't see any advantage to potting other than a nursery or orchid type of plastic pot.

RIP 🪦 to my P. rosso, which I probably killed by a combo of overwatering, repotting, and then underwatering 😂 Also RIP ⚰️ to my Ruby Cascade (overwatered, not enough light in the winter I acquired her) AND the terrarium “might’ve been a caperata” that I lost because I forgot it was behind something else in a 2” pot 🤦🏾‍♀️ 🤞🏾 I can get my obtusifolia going again, propped and ready to pot up soon. Thanks for the tips! 🤣

I own a bunch of Peperomia, they are my favorite genus and more interesting to me than gangly philodendron. That said I usually repot them immediately after buying because they are usually planted in peat. If I leave them in their nursery planter they get stem rot pretty quickly. So I would say that whether you should repot them or not after buying depends on the circumstances.

@NickPileggi A word about petioles and propagation. For P. obtusifolia and P. albovitatta, I carefully cut the base of the leaf to expose the little veins. I found this produces more babies when propagated in water or vermiculite, particularly if the leaves tend to rot easily any other way.

Such a helpful video! I love peperomias and ofc make sure I keep them happy and healthy, haha! The peperomia you repotted is a peperomia quadrangularis I think because the stems have like a cuboid (?) shape, it has four sides if you will. I have one of those and I absolutely love it, especially how the foliage feels. :)

Oh yes, i've been there - I had (technically still have) three types of pap. obtusifolia, a green one and two different viriaged ones, and they were growing just fine in nursery pots. I decided to move them to pretty clay pots, and they've been losing leaves in quick pace every since. I will now move them back to plastic nursery pots, hopefully there will remain something to save...

Thanks to you I've picked up a peperomia addiction! My first houseplants were the variegated obtusifolia and a small angulata/quadrangularis/parallel/puteolata (the nursery didn't know which either) and I am surprised the obtusifolia is still alive because I didn't know not to and not only repotted it within a day to a quite large 5" from 3.5", but sunburned it in my western window sill for a couple of days before I realized my mistake! I wish I had caught this video first. Oops! At least I knew to not get the watermelon as a total beginner.

I repotted my pepormia obusifolia almost immediately because I hadn't seen this video, and she kind of lingered for a while but she is now growing like a FREAKIN WEED! She popped up like six inches over the past two months and I don't even know how that is possible?! Anyway I thought this plant was kinda ugly at first, but because of how FAST it's growing i'm kind of in love now. I pet her a little every day, and she just keeps growing and growing. The dark green leaves and full succulent leaves have added a lot to my oven adjacent kitchen counter (very indirect light, medium to low). I've just started to propagate the plant because of how fast it's growing, and yet it just keeps giving and giving. I would recommend this plant even to a beginner. It's as forgiving and fast growing as a pothos for me, if not faster!

Love peps. I have a tip that is more of a warning: be careful when using systemic insecticides on peperomia. I had a thrips situation last year and resorted to systemic granules. It worked like a dream, but many of my plants - but esp my peps - reacted by putting out warped leaves. I think my peperomia were among the most sensitive. The newer leaves are okay now that’s it’s been several months since treatment. Would be interested to hear if others have experienced this.

Thank you for this awesome video! The pep angulata thing is driving me slightly crazy. I’ve been in the market for a quadrangularis but when I search “Quadrangularis” I get hits for ‘Angulata ‘Funky Frog’ (Quadrangularis)’. The Quadrangularis seems slightly more rounded to me. It also looks very similar to tetragona/puteolata but not as cardboardy/sturdy. Maybe I shouldn’t get so hung up on a name but I do like to know what it is I’m growing. Glad to see you doing well! I was so afraid to overwater my string of turtles that I must have gone to the extreme. The taco test was not adequate for these tiny leaves. Anyway, I noticed spider mites yesterday so I sprayed off and treated and then gave it a good drink of filtered water. Today it looks so much better already. The leaves are plump and not flat. Maybe for this plant that is the better way to observe it’s watering needs?

I keep my SoT in a jar and it helps SO much with the question of when to water. The humidity helps it too. When I am trying to decide if it needs water I will see if the leaves are looking a little less fat than usual or check to see if the stems are less stiff

I was hoping Nick would speak to repotting his pepperomia hope….or not to. Mine looks similar and I was thinking it needs a repot. I have some very long vines and I may just clip a few sections off to propagate. When would you repot this one? This one is very easy to grow which is probably why mine is doing so well. I love the look of the capperrata but after a nice long life I may have overwatered mine. 😕 the tetrasperma is another nice one that I believe he has but didn’t show. It’s so easy to prop from the method he showed us. Thanks for a great video 💚🪴

I know this is an older video, but I've been propagating a cutting (which i divided into 3 smaller cuttings and a few leaves) of a plant that Google Lens told me was a peperomia but i can't remember which kind. I think it might've started with a "g" but it has solid, dark, rounded leaves and the stems are red. The parent plant was a vine. It most closely resembles the one with the glass lid in this video, but I don't think it's the same. I'm fairly certain it is indeed a peperomia, because I have been able to successfully get several individual leaves to root in addition to all of the actual cuttings. If anyone has any clue what I'm dealing with, I would greatly appreciate it.

Some random people I remember, said you didn't have to care or water a Cactus or a Succulent at all. 😐 I was like..... You don't have to water a fish at all, and they don't need water to survive then... I wouldn't last a week, I am really bad at drinking water but I still get something in me through the day. And I can't go f forever till i die without food

Thank god, I’m not the only one constantly knocking leaves off that damn Hope. I likewise have several single leaves planted in the soil. Occasionally one will turn black and die but for the most part they do root! Ugh and this plant has been such a slow grower for me… like there are several new growth points and baby leaves but it hasn’t grown one full new leaf yet in months. It’s still standing straight up and hasn’t started trailing yet. Patience.

As far as I know the “Turboensis” you have isn’t actually a Turboensis. It’s a totally different plant from Turbo - a major grower mislabeled them at some point and now they’re being sold under the wrong name (apparently, according to a botanist in a Peperomia FB group I’m in, so take that with a grain of salt! I’ve heard the one you have called “dragon scale Peperomia” :)

i picked up a nice pepperomia peacock at a nursery, but had to repot it right away... they put it in a huge nursery pot... i guess so they can charge for an 8" pot... when it was clearly in a 4" pot before... i had to under pot it in a 6inch pot...
