Hi! I was wondering if you could make a video on how to tame VERY skittish mice. I have had my three girls for 3 days now and one of them is very skittish and doesn’t like to be even seen.

3 days is very early 😊 give them some time. Try putting your hand as part of the environment and let them investigate you. The more you do this the more confident both of you will get interacting.

I've never had fancy mice (had hamsters, then rats)..but I would say 3 days is still very early for a small animal to get used to their new home and owner. Some of my rats have taken months to relax and start to trust me! I'm sure, given time, they'll start to feel less nervous! (However, all animals, like us, have their own individual personality...some may just be shy. ☺️ You obviously and care for them very much Enjoy your mice!

Thank you both so much! The other two, Mable and Mazie, have already been handled and are very social. I understand that the third mouse, Millie, needs some time. I will give her several months before I try to handle her at all. Thank you again for the feedback!

As others have said, 3 days is early. Many people would day not to even try handling them in this time, as they are still in a scary new environment. That said, some mice are just more nervous long term, and they don't need to all be happy being picked up and petted. I believe Em did a video a while back about training skittish mice to climb into a mug or tube for transport to a carrier for emergencies or cage cleaning. It's okay if a mouse never wants to be cuddled.

Three days is far too soon to expect them to be tamed, I would give them a couple of weeks to just sit by their enclosures and talk to them, they will sit and watch you, i wouldn’t even put my hand into their enclosure. Little and often to sit quietly near them they need to know that they are safe, please keep consistent! 😊

I am completely in love with harvest mice! I look after a colony at work and it's so nice educating the visitors about them, because they're absolutely fascinating animals. Because of their size and lifestyle, they've been proposed as a model species for studying the very early evolution of primates! Your set-up for them is beautiful, too.

Awe, man. About 5 days ago i found 3 abandoned baby mice in a vacuum clear.( Mom abandoned them. Dont worry, i made sure she really did leave them before taking them. ) But last night, i found two of them dead when I came home. Today when i went to feed the remaining baby, she was in an odd position. She was gasping for air and kicking her legs, so i scoop her up and began to try to stimulate her. Only about two minutes if struggle, she past away in my hands.

Hi Emily, I'm also a European dwarf mice owner. And i have to disagree on the smell..i have a big tank with 6 males, they do tend to smell. They also do like to pee on flat surfaces like rats. They smell "so much" that whenever i go to my mum she will tell me i smell like "mice" and not the nice kind. I clean their cage every 2 months completely and spot clean here and there.. my females indeed smell A LOT less... Also I'd compare their tails more like rat tails, they do the same with their tails. Just another perspective of another ed mice owner
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! I cared for a group of 12+ males that weren’t cleaned anywhere near enough / if at all until I did it and didn’t find there to be much of a smell compared to my rats that can smell a lot after just a week

I have a mouse that was intended to be eaten by a snake, but he wouldn’t eat the mouse so we took him out and kept him as a pet:) I got him a pretty big enclosure, but I’m getting so much anxiety from how much he poops. i’m not sure what type of mouse he is, but I am cleaning his enclosure 4-5 times a day because he poops everywhere and I just don’t feel like cleaning once a week is enough. Does anybody have any tips?

I have a question, my male rat has a little bumb on one of his feet (it's like mosquito bite) it doesn't grow or anything and it doesn't hurt him ,but what could it be ? ,I don't think it's a tumor tho
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
Is it on the bottom of the foot? Could it be something like bumblefoot? Sometimes mine will get little lumps and bumps on random places like their tails and they're just small abscesses that go away over time

There is a fair bit we can, and do, do vet-wise for them though, so I wouldn't put people off in that respect. Drugs can be diluted for their size, and surgery is absolutely possible ❤

I need help! My girl mouse just passed away yesterday and the male is alone now. He fights with the two other girls I have so he’s alone in his own tank. I heard he won’t get along with males but he fights the girls too. What do I do so he’s not lonely?
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
Sometimes mice don’t gel well with other mice and need to be tried with other mice. I’d recommend getting a few more as you’ll need more company for the two girls as well at some point, and maybe try him with different mice to see if he gets along with them 🤞🏼

Do you have other mice? They'll often 'clean up' by eating the dead body if it isn't removed quick enough to prevent it attracting predators

They are very cute BUT I find it highly problematic promoting them as pets like you are doing in this video. With higher demand there will be ruthless people who try and catch harvest mice from the wild to breed and sell them. If you want to keep pets, please stick to established species like color rats or mice, guinea pigs etc. Everything else is just borderline irresponsible, especially if you proceed to promote your choice on social media. Even if you yourself are a responsible pet keeper you will probably attract 10 more who aren't and will cause great suffering to innocent animals.
@Emiology
@Emiology 8 ай бұрын
OR you could look at it this way. This video could help hundreds of harvest mice that people have ALREADY chosen to get and may not be caring for properly before they saw this video. I’d be very surprised if anyone is able to firstly locate and then catch harvest mice in the wild without some sort of prior knowledge. It’s been a while since I filmed this so can’t remember if it was this video or another but I’ve said to be careful where you source them from.
@No-longer1
@No-longer1 2 ай бұрын
And you shouldn't ever post videos about cute kittens because there could be people that see it and start abusing them. Yeah that's a completly valid request. If anything, I'd like if harvest mice were promoted as pets **more** because that would actually maybe make people breed them and making obtaining off them less like trying to obtain nuclear missile launch codes. I also fail to see the incentive of scouring through gigantic open fields for hours on end to end up with 3-4 specimens instead of getting an extra tank or two, set up a male and female and then voila, you have like 8 harvest mice now from a single litter. It doesn’t seem that complicated to breed or raise them compared to other rodents
