Yes it’s best to put a tablespoon amount in your hamsters bowl, see how long it take for it to finish the bowl and put a table spoon once it’s empty. Once you know how long it takes your hamster to finish it’s food, you can start sprinkling the food around the cage instead of putting it in the bowl. If your hamster is like mine and he just shoves all the food in his cheeks and takes it home, so it’s hard to tell how long it takes him to finish. I usually don’t sprinkle food in there one or two days a week. I also noticed my hamster was getting a little chunky so I just cut back on some food and he seems to be good again.

I like to scatter feed the pieces my hamster thinks are the yummiest just to give her that extra challenge to get her favorites. Everything else I put in her bowl. I also give her one small papaya treat every other day. She adores her mazuri pellets and makes a huge mess of them, so I keep them in a separate area all together to avoid the copious amounts of crumbs that come from her eating them lol

I found out a good way to make sure you don't starve your hamster, since it can be hard to tell when they've finished foraging. Keep their lab block in their food bowl and scatter feed their seed mix. They'll eat the seeds first and, once they've eaten all of that, they'll go for the pellets. Once the pellets are gone you can feed them again. Another way I feed my hamster is putting the main food in the food dish, but leaving the forage mix around the cage. Once again, refill once the bowl has been emptied. They're both very reliable ways of making sure your ham gets all the nutrients they need while still providing them enrichment :)

My hamster is very picky with grains but she is a eating machine with veggies and fruits, she gets them everyday from the begging. She loves basil, parsley, carrot, banana, apples, raddish, cherries, almost everything i give her. Also egg and all kind of cheese (of course limited, not too much, not everyday). I always fed my hamsters every day because I never knew this. But all of my hamsters have loved to take their food out of their bowl and hide it, then eat it over time. So is it still not good to feed them every day, if they arent eating it all in one day?

I recommend not to feed them every day. Initially, I was so worried that they would be hungry during the night so I checked on them in the wee hours. Then, I realised it is not good to overfeed them. As they age, they will slow down in their consumption.

Woah what's up with all the new videos? I love it! Just one comment: I actually kind of disagree with leaving all the food in the bowl until it's eaten. That's because I believe it would make a hamster less likely to make a nice bunker, and force them to eat food they don't like. If they really don't like the food, it should be switched up. Sure, they sometimes leave some parts, for example, If they always leave mealworms, you can try giving them another kind of protien. With some things it may not be that easy, but if big components of the food aren't eaten, the food should be switched. I also read about this on a few German forums, and what they say, is that what they do (if they don't scatter feed) is leave the food in the bowl, and if they notice that the hamster hasn't touched the leftover food after a while, they re-fill it. (Most people just scatter feed, but this is the closest I found to leaving food in the bowl)💕 Not to criticize at all, I just think that this is a really intresting topic :)

Well the bits the hamster doesn't seem to like should be checked for nutritional value to see if it's a big probelm. Higgins Sunburst mixed with Mazuri lab blocks seems to be a mix many hamsters love. A hamster might not like some things but needs to eat it if it's an important nutrient. :)

I dehydrated veggies (the frozen mixtures) that are safe for hamsters , according to several fonts, like carrot, chickpeas , broccoli, cauliflower, corn and zuchinn plus cucumber. Then they have little bit as snacks from time to time, they love it. I do not over do it because this veggies may have sugars and I do not want my hamsters to develop diabetes.

these vids help so much!!! I decided to run with your video on what to feed, and I worked out a well-balanced ration using Wild Harvest advanced nutrition mix and dried mealworms. I’m thinking I’ll want to feed my robo dwarf hamster 1tbsp in a dish and 1tbsp scattered as forage every 3 days and see how that goes.. Fruits and veggies will also be a must! and fairly easy to keep up, considering how much my kids love to eat blackberries and carrots and romaine salads 😂

I have a gerbil (I know gerbils and hamsters are different, but I still like watching hamster care videos because their care is similar), and I feed him a little under half a tablespoon of food in the morning and once everything is gone i refill it with the same amount through the day. Hello! So I’m looking to get my first hamster of my adult life (my brother had one when we were kids) and I’ve watched practically all of your videos but still have a couple questions I hope you could answer: 1. How do you sanitize hamster safe wood to put in the cage? 2. Can dwarfs eat the same foods as syrians? 3. Where did you get your wodent wheel? I live in Canada too and can’t seem to track one down

Happy my channel could be some help! If you're buying wood from the pet stores it's already safe and doesn't need to be sanitized, if it's from outdoors then I recommend either baking in the oven at a high temp or boiling it! Dwarfs can have all the same foods as Syrians & I actually had my wheels shipped to the US and I drove and picked them up across the border. There are some wodent wheels on Amazon they can be a bit pricey though. It appears wodent wheels seem to be very hard to find in Canada now that I google around 😅 There is the Kaytee 10" silent spinner on amazon if you're interested in something like that!

Oh...well I'm glad I heard about the refill bowl rule 😆 I just got my first ever hamster and I legit just refilled her bowl. Now I'll make sure to wait next time~ woops.

It's not too common to see food related topics (understandably so as it's not a simple subject); but I think this video will seriously help out so many people and I'm surprised there aren't really that many other videos about the frequency of feeding! A yoghurt drop I give once a week but probably not even that because I like giving them dried treats, like crunchy treats, my fave and the hamsters fave are by a brand called tiny friends farm xx

This is super useful! Like you said, I also always find contradicting information on this. My hamster collects all her food in her house so I cant see how much she has left without distroying it. I also often leave in the weekend so she is on her own for a little over 2 days, and I never know how much food to give her

Thank you! I find a tablespoon can be eaten pretty fast, and generally,​ as long as they're pouching everything in the dish I don't worry too much about picky eating since most picky eaters just pick out what they want and leave the rest.

@victoriaraechel, I just got my Roborovski last night. He hasnt touched any of his food, I put in some nuggets that the petshop recommended, along with some seed mix. I am a very new owner, trying to get things right but struggling. Was terrified about him not touching his food yet, but this video is helping a lot.

I slightly fill his bowl, and scatter a little bit of food around his cage. Wait 3-4 days and than do the same food. Is that a good diet for him? I give him treats every week (unless they are healthy!) And i give him veggies every other day
