Years ago as a teenager I planted bananas in my mums garden, I’m in my 30’s now they’re still standing and are completely unprotected (however it is a very sheltered sunny garden). This year I finally planted one in my garden, it was about 30cm high and it’s now around 4ft, still putting out big leaves and we’re now in oct. Definitely anxious about its protection this winter as it’s done so well I don’t want to start at the ground. Having said that I’d say it’s very healthy as it’s got three pups!

Very helpful. I’m in the U.S. and just purchased 2 dwarf Orinoco banana plants. I’m keeping them inside this winter and trying to gather as much information as I can to better prepare for next winter. Thanks again

Your garden is looking great - love the rhus tree for canopy. I’ve been wondering about overwintering my ensete in the greenhouse, but as a lot of the advice out there is about dry storage, I wasn’t sure, so this is really helpful, and has inspired me to have a go. Thanks Craig!

Great looking 🍌🍌🍌 Craig. It's amazing how resilient musa basjoo are. For 2 winters I foolishly wrapped my pseudostems with bubble wrap. Despite this awful treatment I lost only one of them. Horticultural fleece is my weapon of choice now. Musa sikhamensis is interesting. I find it definitely less hardier than the basjoo. Lost all the height on my pseudostems this year. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. They grow much quicker than my basjoo, the new foliage has much more red colouration than the old foliage. To the point where I'm seriously wondering whether to bother protecting the height this year. Musa lasiocarpa is another solid option that in my experience is hardier than the sikhamensis. Dry storing the ensetes is the only option for me regards space issues. I've never lost one using this method, I think it's fool proof. Lost 2 plants last winter trying to keep them alive inside (too much water) that for me it's genuinely not worth the bother. Great video as always. Cheers

Hi just watch your video on wintering Banana plants. Can I ask do I need to remove the pups that have grown in summer before hibernating for winter.

Hi - thanks for the video, can i ask what about Dwarf Cavendish bananas- would they be ok overwintered similar to Ensetes?

Dwarf cavendish will be better kept potted in containers and moved into a warm frost free sunny spot over winter.

Hi Craig do you have any information on how hardy brassiaopsis mitis are? I've had one in a pot for a couple of years which I bring in during the winter months but ideally I'd like to put it into my garden. However I know how hard it is to source this plant and I don't want to loose it. Any information would be appreciated as there doesn't seem to be alot of info about them at all. Cheers

Hi Sharon, they should be hardy in a lot of the UK, definitely down to -5C. If you planted it out I would say mulch it to protect the roots. I hope that helps? 🙂

Hi Craig, I am located on Long Island NY (zone 7a). I have a group of Musa Basjoo that has grown to about 25 plants that are that are about 4 to 5 meters high. In the past, I always wrapped the stems in bubble wrap. Last year, I lost all of stems except one that survived to about 2 meters, but then blew over in a spring storm. This year I will definitely use fleece. I have many requests from friends if they can have a pup or two and I’m trying to figure out the best way to share these at this time of year. I was wondering if Musa Basjoo can survive dry storage the way that I store my Elephant Ear bulbs, or maybe try digging up some pups and trying keeping them alive inside in pots. I appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks!

Can you move an ensete into the house? Would you remove leaves and let dry or treat as house plant for winter?

Hi Ollie, my parent have theirs as houseplants all year and they seem to cope quite well! I would keep it on the drier side in winter though 👍
