Did your banana survive with this method? I didn’t see any updates in your channel. Also, what zone are you in?

You know how I have always protected Musa basjoo . Just use bubble plastic on the trunks, no need to ever cut the trunks down or remove leaves. Let the killing frost nuke the foliage and remove it in the Spring. Use those leaves for mulch around the plants.

Thank you for that video. Much appreciated. I will use horticultural fleece as well as in the UK for the most part we do not get colder than -7 / -8 degrees C. Hence no point in cutting it down to the ground and using bags of hey / straw for protection like they do overseas in places which get temperatures of -20

Do you not use bubble wrap ? An I’m only asking as I’m unsure which technique to use on mine which aren’t as big yet an last winter we got -10 / -11.

I bought a 'hardy' banana tree from garden centre. It's about 3 ft in height . Leaves are still coming out even now. Cut it back in December?

Moisture release heat on those cold nights. That's why were told to water frost sensitive plants the night before frost.

@@ladyjdabull5847 here in Chicago we have some weeks in the winter they call artic blasts which gets -10 to -30 Fahrenheit. Not sure what that is in Celsius. But a good trick in colder winter climates is wrap the base of the tree in Christmas lights. Not the leds because they don't give off heat. Run the cord outside of your insulating jacket you made and anytime the winter gets really harsh plug the lights in. Works wonders. I have lost alot in our "artic blast" winters here. But not anymore!

Is it possible to plant it a little bit deeper into the ground to make sure that bigger part of the stem survives and grows faster next season, or the rhizome can't live if planted too deep?
@lpnp9477
@lpnp9477 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the variety. Mekong giant rhyzomes can be planted very deeply but Musa basjoo can't be deeper than much more than half a meter. Rule of thumb is that the further a banana can run, the deeper it will tolerate being planted. That said, planting more deeply won't make for a larger above-ground plant. The robustness and quantity of the roots and soil richness are what will determine how well your banana will grow in the coming year. People try to save as much of them stem as possible to save a couple weeks of growth or try to maximize the height above ground. Their bananas are not any stronger than ones cut to the ground.

I never knew that if you throw a banana skin in your garden it will turn into a plant. I've got a few and was wondering what I had planted, but it's the banana skins.

This technique is not full proof. Rot can get in and so can the cold. Best thing to do is dig up and put in garage. Cold and dry is better than wet and cold. Just my personal experience.

@@SilverlineToolsTV 😂 just had to edit from wet and dry to wet and cold .. lol Yes I tried the wrapping technique but when spring came, it rotted all the way down to the root. Was a particularly cold winter mind.

I disliked this video for one reason. Your solution for protection is radical surgery, but you don't follow up three months later and show if it worked, or if you just killed or stunted the banana plants. Like most other videos on the subject, it just amounts to your theory.
