I just picked one of these up last week 🥰 I had stopped at a local plant shop and left without it, couldn't stop thinking about it all day, and then was actually watching one of your videos while repotting some other plants and you mentioned it. I took it as a sign and went back for it before they closed. They're so pretty!

I have an 8 yr old blue star fern, I live in Colorado, technically a desert, so very low humidity, I have missed waterings, it’s doing great! It’s in super bright light.

We have a huge sago palm growing in direct sunlight when out of the blue, a plant grew from it’s trunk. Perhaps the wind carried the plant spores & lodge into the palm. We were wondering what kind of plant that is . Did not know it is a blue star fern until your video today. The fern is huge, leaves are about 3-4 feet; hardly cared for yet thriving from nutrients being given by the sago palm. Thanks for the info!

I agree this is an appetizing choice for beginners and connoisseurs alike. I grow both the blue cultivar, Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' and the green species, Phlebodium aureum. Aureum is a Latin term meaning golden. I wondered why golden? I looked closer at my green one. There's an interesting gradation from green around the midrib, to a gold-green toward the edges. The golden reference is used also in a spruce, Picea orientalis 'Aurea', whose new springtime shoots in golden green contrast elegantly with the older needles in deep green.

Thanks for this! Blue Star fern is somewhat sensitive to overwatering, fronds get brown/purple/black blotches. Needs reasonably well draining soil.

I've had one of these for almost two years and even though I find myself picking dry leaves out of the pot every few months it just keeps growing, incredible. I might not be a fern killer since my boston fern is thriving (which means I'm a self proclaimed grandma at the fine age of 22) but I can say this one truly could be called foolproof :D I wish my nicholas diamond fern was doing just as well...

I got my blue star with the Hilton Carter collection at at target. I tried to move it around and almost killed it but I've found it's happiest in my bathroom with the filtered light. I love the idea of ferns but they are picky!

I have a Kangaroo Paw Fern which looks very similar (leaves are green rather than blue)...it goes outside for the winter and by summer it triples in size (it is now huge).....comes indoors for summer and still grows well indoors and does well in lower light.....very easy to propagate by division (just break some of the rhizome a plant in a new pot)...
