Hello, thoses that aren't green after watering are dead so cut them off or they'll rot and your orchid is in danger it could rot the wole plant
@stancexpunks
@stancexpunks 8 ай бұрын
That would require taking it out of the pot and manipulating it which could cause the flowers and or buds to drop. Orchids are very sensitive to change. The norm is to wait until it’s done flowering, esp if you’re a beginner.

@@stancexpunks You are not wrong but sometimes it's necesary to safe the plant. Loosing all flowers doesn't mean death for the orchid, while loosing all roots potentially does

Only cut brown soft roots, those roots are dead (root rot). The yellow ones are also good.

That is a beautiful orchid! We don’t see that color in this area. I would definitely put that one in a pot that is a couple of inches larger. The dead roots need to be removed. As the dead roots decay they change the chemical composition in the container. The live roots need to have a little more room to grow. I hope I will someday find a beautiful orchid like yours.

I agree with the other comments. Even though it's indeed a short video, that doesn't mean it is rejustified to spread false advice. The roots don't look good especially after the soaking it's very obvious. So you could have mentioned that you would advice to repot it soon

@oneorchidaday

I water them weekly but I check if the roots are still green. They can go 2 weeks without watering at winter time. I repot all of my orchids in a mix of bark and moss, and I use an all purpose orchid fertiliser that I find locally. I fertilise them each 2 weeks, roughly, and less when it gets cooler.

@@oneorchidaday what type of bark and moss
@maddog74
@maddog74 Жыл бұрын
@@elisamarro7356 Look for orchid bark, take the one with the pieces of the right size for your plant (the smaller it is, the smaller the pieces must be). I don't recommend moss, I didn't like it, but you can try sphagnum moss (dry). I also enjoyed growing them in water However, you must make sure that 1. The roots are all alive and perfectly clean and free of earth or other substrates 2. That the water does not become foul-smelling or that larvae grow in it (if there are some algae it's not a problem) 3. That the roots don't rot, if you see that they do cut them and leave the roots in the air for 2 days, it won't hurt the plant 4. Water should NEVER submerge the leaves or the base of the plant, only the roots can be underwater Oh and use a transparent container because in epiphytic orchids (like phalenopsis, the most common) they also photosynthesise and need light.

@@oneorchidaday that's the first thing I do when I buy a supermarket orchid, I repot it. I brought a big healthy rooted orchid from tesco the other day, the roots are fantastic. it had an awful plastic cage with sponge in it wrapped around the core. That would have been the death of this beautiful plant if I left it in that death trap pot. Growers want your orchid to rot so youll go buy another one.

Hi, that's a great question. I wouldn't water with ice. This orchid is a tropical plant, and as such, it receives water from the rain at an intermediate temperature. Give it water at a temperature that you could use to drink and hydrate yourself as well. I hope it is helpful.

I knew someone who had a mini phalenopsis orchid, her other caregiver put an ice cube on the pot once a week. It bloomed twice so seems to me that’s ok. It was kept in an eastern-facing window. I plan to use this method in a recently purchased orchid.
@stancexpunks
@stancexpunks 8 ай бұрын
@@UncommonEyes you know 1 person who did that so you disregard all the expert growers and common sense? The justaddice thing is just a sales tactic. They’re trying to make it seem easy when actually freezing water has NO business on a TROPICAL plant. I guarantee the company that grew that plant never used ice. Your friends orchid may have bloomed twice but if she would’ve used non freezing water then it probably would’ve performed much better, giving more bigger, longer lasting blooms. The only good thing about just add ice is it makes overwatering less likely which is the #1 cause of orchid death. So just use the same amount of water an ice cube has but make it a non frozen water. Cold is fine but just not freezing. Or let an ice cube melt and warm up a bit before adding it
