Love this! I would add that bettas need a place to hide and a place to lounge near the surface (like leaves) especially if they are large finned. And to be sure tank decor is smooth and won’t rip fins (e.g. real or silk plants over plastic) or that it doesn’t have small holes they can get stuck in (they like to wedge themselves into small spaces). Oh, and match water temperature too when you do those water changes!

I love my betta. got him 3 days ago and i only had guppies so it was different caring for a betta but i found that taking care of a betta fish was a little easier for some reason vs the care for my guppies. love them both so much though. i wish they (all bettas) could all get along with eachother! imagine a tank with some bettas all together! 😭

It's mainly younger hobbist that do that cuase they don't know how the sizing came about. The 2.5 gallon long is considered the bare min cuase that is the min tank size you need to keep a betta healthy.where the 5 gallon came from was it was suggested has the ideal becuase no matter if it was a long or tall it would have the right tank length for swimming space. Then a small group fish keepers heard the word ideal and decided that the ideal should owes be the min.

0:54 Irene, that's a lot of Prime for that tank! My water is pretty well-chlorinated (it smells like a pool out of the tap), and one drop of Prime is good for 2.5 gallons. It's potent stuff! And it makes your water smell like garlic and broccoli, to put it politely. Way more potent than Tetrafin conditioner. Thiosulfate has a very low toxicity in general, but it can harm invertebrates. I learned this the hard way when it killed my daphnia, moina, fairy shrimp, and triops I had going last year :( But great job! I love your videos so much, I'm planning to show them to my class on Thursday. Learning how to care for a pet can be a great way to teach responsibility and self-care.

Remember, when you get any sort of new fish in a bag, don't put it in the tank immediately. Put the bag in the water for it to get used to its surroundings, if you have lights turn them off! It can be stressful for the fish, but after about 10 minutes, you can turn them back on :-)

All great tips. I have several male bettas. I've found they are less stressed gradually stepping them up to a bigger tank. I start mine out in a one gallon filtered bowl (with silk plants) for a week, then in a two gallon filtered, heated bowl (with silk plants)for another week or two then into a 5 -10 gallon tank.

As far as sponge filters are concerned, my favourite are Poret foam ones, as they are incredibly resistant and efficient. However, I'm not sure of how readily available they are world-wide. There are definitely ways to make one yourself if you get the foam on it's own, but you can also get them through Swiss Tropicals in the US or Angelfins in Canada.

I had a betta fish I kept it in a five with tankmates ! I know looking back it was way to small to have tankmates . It was way to aggressive and killed 1 of its tankmates and chased all the other ones . I had to re home him and instead get 2 new guppy’s in replacement for him. It’s sad cuz he’d let me touch him (pet him) and he was to cute! I miss him but I’m getting a 50 gallon and moving all the fish in my five into that new aquarium so I’m hoping to get a new betta and put it in the five gal :D

Hey Irene.. Brilliant video. I recently saw a jet black betta kept in a polythene cover the other day. It broke my heart to see him. So I brought him home. His name is Cederic. He's in my 10 gallon tank with a couple of guppies and snails. I have no plants and I don't get water conditioner at my local stores. So it's just plain gravel with a heater. He seems to be enjoying himself chasing the guppies around but every once a while, he gets all finicky at the edges of the tank and hits his head against the edge. Is this normal?

My daughter also has that top fin retreat tank. She actually removed the entire back filter component and switched to a sponge filter. Need to add that as another hack for your tank review. But glad to see the finnex hang on light still works with the lid on. I have that zoomed 50 gallon frag tank. Too tough to get a lid for it. Looks like I need to get another retreat tank.

Definitely add a lid to your tank! Your Betta may not jump at all but I've had way too many friends whose better never jumped and one day they woke up to a dead Betta who had jumped out if the tank suddenly after years of never jumping.

@girltalksfish Please Help!! I've been in the process of trying to get my betta's fins unclamped. I've done the lifeguard tablets 5 days as instructed w/o the carbon filter & I just did the bettafix 7 day treatment with water changes for both of those. I do use the dechlorinated bottled betta water bc I've tried treating my tap but it just eats away at his fins so I stick with the bottles. Anywaaaay, I haven't seen any changes for him. I want his fins to be beautiful😭! I'm not sure what else to do...

Oh, congrats on your upcoming betta fish! I'd say that some great beginner plants are marimo moss balls, java fern, and anubias. They don't need to have special lighting or substrate, so you can just super glue the roots of the java fern and anubias to some pretty rocks or driftwood. Then you can easily move the plants around if you want to redecorate or vacuum around them with a siphon. :)

Good question - it could be happening for many reasons. Was he active before and then his behavior been changed? Is he still eating well or is he overweight? Is he getting enough oxygen? Is his water clean or has it been a while since his last water change? Does he look injured? Try searching online for any symptoms you see to research into possible illnesses. Good luck!

Haha, he's very smart so it was made a lot of sense to him when I just explained the logic of quarantining to him. Also, he's seen my fish suffer from illness when I didn't quarantine and neither of us want that to happen again.

I love the look of dragon stone, but it has lots of very sharp edges. Isn’t that something that should be avoided with a Betta fish’s tail?
