The tree philodendron, or philodendron selloum, is a leafy, tropical plant that makes a big impact in any space. But this South American beauty requires the right environment to ensure its dark green, lobed leaves always look their best. Plant Doctor Hilton Carter breaks down the basics of philodendron tree care: where to place it in your home, when and how much to water it, how to tell it’s ready to repot, and more!

Never really looked into this plant before, had one for years. Bought it in a store for 50% when it was about to become garbage. Today this dude takes over my tiny hope. "He" lives outside in a summer, and usually double in size. Which means, I have to cut a few of his leafs when he goes back inside in a winter. Definitely has personality! Cool to see a video about it, but to be honest, never gave it THAT much care.

Thanks. I inherited one from my sister who away recently. She's huge! and I don't really have experience with this type of plant so this helps... she looked a little down when I first brought her home, but I've just noticed tons of new leaves sprouting, so I know she is settling in well.

I currently have one that is huge, and it is the baby of the original one I bought in Reno some 30 years ago. That plant lived 20 years before it passed away. This baby is now about ten or eleven years old, and I just took the "sucker" off it to make another plant.

Mine started deteriorating about 2 weeks after bringing it home. It has brown tips but yellow leaves. I checked the roots, and they're perfectly fine. I have it between east wind south windows. Which has filtered light. The room is around 66-68° with 50-60% humidity and I have a lot of plants around the area. I repotted it since it was rootbound and use rain water. It's still not improving. I don't know what else to do!

They're hardy enough to be planted outside in a shaded planter here in south Louisiana(Lake Charles). Our winters are mild here and we may only see a true freeze(below 32 degrees F) only twice per winter, and even then it's just an overnight low. Once the sun comes out, it's back to the forties and fifties for the daytime highs. With age, these things can get large and grow on a stalk similar to how a palm tree grows on a trunk. I've seen them up around five feet high before!
@AraceaeFanatics

Indeed, here in Florida, many are planted in direct sunlight and once acclimated, do very well in these conditions. Our winters are like yours and we're okay with that too. I've seen these trained upright and hold themselves quite tall as well, and also snake themselves over the ground over time. They add a great patch of green to any landscape. Their sibling Xanadu as well.

Thank you I’m under watering it. When I first became plant mom I OVER watered and killed many plants , so now, I’m afraid to water now so I end up with crispy. Can’t win. I have my Pearl Plant on a very regimented watering schedule. I don’t care if she’s dry or not. I water every 1.5 weeks 😅😮 god FORBID if I mist her! It might as well be poison. Same with my Hoya/ Christmas cactus. Although he just doesn’t like it, he doesn’t immediately perish like my Pearl plant. I’d like to hear a tutorial on Curly Sue. Last winter, out of nowhere, well after I had stopped fertilizing it blossom little flowers then some kind of small ball. Not sure what it was. Why do this in the winter , when I had cut down watering and NO fertilizer. Made zero sense. 🤷‍♀️. No explanation when I googled.

I have a HUGE philodendron that's been in my family for around 45 years. It came from the church that I grew up in. My mom took it in because they no longer wanted it. And this point It's VERY root bound so I'm hoping your suggestions will help. I'll say you 'spoil' yours more than I do mine. But it's very happy and HUGE regardless. It's at least 6-8 feet in diameter and about 6' tall. It's my favorite plant. I need to split it - please help!!

There is a great video in YT showing a repotting of a giant philodendron.It is a huge undertaking but I followed her demonstration - I did what she did last June, and it did great until winter and now it is doing terrible. It goes outside every summer where it always perks up. It was thriving for 20 years until it got so rootbound there was almost no soil left. I am starting to see lots of new growth now but the new leaves seem to curl and look weak, and are misshapen. i would love to know what I am doing wrong !

I bought a Split Leaf Philodendrum-when I purchase it was already Water down, I let sit in it's pot for a about week before repotting, I repotted with a mixture miracle grow potting soil/top soil and perlite, rocks at the bottom of the pot, since my plant is still wet, I prepare my soil put it in the pot ONLY mist the soil in the pot, place my plant and cover with the rest of soil which is more dry with a little dampness, Place on the floor which gets indirect sunlight and it stay warms- It was bushy I lost a lot leaves because they are turning brown, mushy, it has a sweet smell, I had to cut a lot of leaves because of a lot of browning I have 74 plants this one may not be a good fit for me, I don't know if I can save it. It's a Beautiful Plant Nevertheless I'm frustrated.

I thought I was overwatering mine over the winter because the leaves were turning yellow Then I realized I was underwatering it - I let it dry out completely too many times and the soil became hydrophobic - it wasn't getting any moisture at all and the water was just running right through! I dried out the poor thing. Now it is recovering but it is not the same.
