There are many ways to carry your kit around the place...here's one!
Remember this one is only possible when...
- The direction of wind is suitable for you to safely to so,
- The strength/consistency of wind is suitable,
- Your kit is small enough for you to safely do so!
It's definitely not the "go-to" way of carrying kit... but at times can be the ideal way!

Skills like gybing/tacking (and many many others) can have soooo many coaching points!
What also follows below here here is really special though.... the FULL breakdown of ALL the coaching points needed to complete the get back on the water for the summer successfully!
_________________________________________
To lift up...
- Start with the board close to the wind, sail across or even slightly downwind of the board.
- Front hand to the mast, back hand to the back foot-strap.
- Head below the boom... aiming for a point where the sail and board balance.
To Control...
- apx 90 degree window of the board directly to windward of you, mast pointing downwind... moving to the board, you and the sail in-line across the wind.
To remove/put down...
- Spin so the head of the sail moves towards the wind, lifting the clew as you do so.
- Place the noes of the board and continue to rotate the sail until de-powered.

Hi! Thanks for watching! Nico makes great videos, super professional and well edited! I noticed he didn’t talk about carrying kit on your head though so thought it’d be a nice opportunity to add some bits to it! 👍

Another word of caution when carrying gear on your head. I wear a helmet and I it has a GoPro clip mount on top. When carrying the sail on my helmet the clip on top punctured my Duotone sail and the whole panel ripped to pieces. Ouch! Definitely impressed....and sad 😔.

Oh no! I have to be careful for the little pin/bobble thing in the top of my caps!
@Handzoff

@@Cookiesports I wouldn't worry about a cap and the button on top, since it's flexible. A helmet is rigid and the GoPro clip on top has some sharp edges, so it presses much harder into the sail. Hope my mistake will save someone else's sail. 🙂

This is a great, efficient way to carry a board and sail. I'm currently using a 185L board so I will wait until I'm confident with lighter boards before I try this. Lovely blue sky and turquoise water!! Greek paradise!

My kit is like me, old and brittle. I'd be wearing it not carrying it. I only ever do this with my younger sails and small board. It used to impress the ladies, now they just realise I'm too old to bend down and pick it up. PS I actually did put my head through the sail once. It was embarrassing. Getting it off again more so. Oh how they laughed.

Thanks for the content Cookie. I notice that the board always had the windward rail lower when you were carrying it, do you ever raise the windward rail to get more lift under the board?

Might a little lift, to be honest lifting the Noe’s towards the wind (as I am here), helps a bit with lifts anyway! Thanks for watching!

Great video! I tried this today but feel like the board is blocking my vision. Do you usually look under your board or between board and sail?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports Жыл бұрын
Yeh it does get in the way a bit, I find the gap between the board and sail, sometime just look at the ground in front of me and stay aware of my surroundings!

I’m thinking how best to do an intro to freestyle in the ride along style… maybe volcans into spocks and flaka’s. 🙌

I’m always nervous about pressure on the panels of sail. Is there technique when wind is directly behind you. Ie onshore leaving the beach.

Learning to beach/water-start is super help with kit control. I’ve got a video coming soon about kit handling on the beach.

By the way- panels are strong, shouldn’t be any stress over kit damage if you carry like this. 👍

I note that your head is touching the boom along the batten pocket. Is this an important point to avoid damaging the sail or just coincidence?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports Жыл бұрын
I don’t think I see that… but it’s just coincidence- nothing to do with actually carrying it. A freestyle/wave sail like the Spy when sailing you don’t want the sail touching the boom… a sail like the ACX (seen in some of my other videos) where the 2nd batton crosses the boom it’s fine for the sail to be touching it.
@paulsp2k
@paulsp2k Жыл бұрын
@@Cookiesports Sorry, I meant the sail, not the boom.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports Жыл бұрын
@@paulsp2k ahhh- no- didn’t aim for the batton- although that would make a stronger place to lift it from…. However it’s luck if that balances the kit or not!

Two more WORDS OF CAUTION! Be VERY aware of the depth of water as you near the beach! - I once jumped off the board into the shallows by the beach, and it was very shallow compared to what I was expecting and I wrenched my knee sideways really badly... That sickening kind of pain! Totally ruined the day and made me limp for several more!! Consider other beach users - don't hit them with the end of your mast or drip water all over them or their gear! Unless you want a fight!

I would stay away from this technique of carrying your equipment. I had a seam pull on my 6.2 after do it to lift my kit out of the water to place on a raised dock. I only did it 4-5 times and my board was either and 84 or a 116.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports Жыл бұрын
It definitely has a specific time and place… hence the intro but if the video. However I often carry my kit like this… stable, safe and efficient when done correctly. 👍
