At 4.10 you are about to find out that you forgot your fin, so you walk back to the van to go get it. Once back at you gear you realise that you forgot the screwdriver to attach the fin to the board, so you have a nice stoll back to the van (which you repeat to bring back the screwdriver after attaching the fin). All in all a perfect warmup 😂. (But seriously, very nice video with handy tips, thanks for that!)

Sooooo true. I noticed it too. Once I had to walk the stuff (big board and rigged sail, separately) for a huge distance on sand. At the moment of connecting the 2 parts... I realised I had forgotten to install the base plate. 😩 3rd walk!

Thank you for this! I really would have needed this about a month ago, first surf session of the year. I had a difficult time carrying both board and rig together, so I decided to carry them separetly. I took the rig first, left the board, brand new 2021 Starboard Carve. Then the wind flipped the board and smashed it to the ground, braking the board on 4 spots 😭 So keeping them together and carrying them together I will do from here on out!

I still struggle with my front foot wanting to slip out of my footstrap at high speed when using racing gear. I’ve tried all the different techniques to add pressure to the front foot (boom lower, tighter footstraps, different downhaul settings, mast base position, waist harness as opposed to seat harness, different fin sizes etc) but no luck and it’s ruining my sailing. I’ve asked many top sailors in my area and even on the tour but no one seems to be able to help. I don’t have front foot issues when using wave sails on freeride or free race boards, only full race sails. If you could do a video on how to set up your gear to reduce front foot issues that would be awesome. Setting up harness lines for race kit would be great too. Thanks for all your content so far. 😊

Great video, I love the mast base tip! While carrying the gear on your head, you will find that you have more control over the board if, instead of holding the foot strap, you put your hand palm down on the board through the foot strap (thumb doesn't go through). This gives you much more control over the angle of the board in the wind.

Awesome, can't wait to try! Now we only need the definitive guide on how to place your gear in the wind so it doesn't fly away. Especially unconnected - fin on the ground or not ? Great video! 11.15 is the most important for the vast majority of windsurfers so perhaps if you do another how to carry video that would be helpful to expand on. Otherwise all v helpful. I would add that if you are carrying board and sail separately never to leave the sail by the water’s edge unattended in case it flies away. So carry board to beach first!

I put each mast section through each foot strap , Then boom on top, harness lines around mast extension and then sail on top secured front and back same as nico , and then tie down haul rope round the lot Then you only have to carry one package and it won’t blow away The mast extender through foot strap looks like recipe for damaged wrist ….if wind blows suddenly from wrong direction

Nico, great video as always. The quality is getting better and better. Is there any chance for you to do another video on carrying foil gear? How to get it through the shore break and back again. And also with wave sailing how to walk your gear back up the beach to the original launching spot. I usually just carry it board in hand and sail in the other, have tried to carry it on my head but sometimes it gets a little bit out of control. Thanks again for all the great videos. All the best.

Hoi Nico, there is another way, which in my opinion is even easier to carry board and sail on the head. You take the board and put it on top of the sail with the fins looking towards the sky! I think it's easier to balance as the board is on top of your head and not a weight in front of you. cheers

This is great video, nothing new to me (I saw technique carrying it seperately in each hand some years ago on Fehmarn/Heiligenhafen) and its such an excelent way how to carry your gear between car and beach). Well that thing with the extension under footstrap never occured to me (I have small boards, so no issues here, but I will give it a try). Its nicely explained how and why it works. Mast 90° to the wind that should be basic to everyone, but when u look at beach how others doing it then its not :( Everytime I go I see many guys just fighting with wind while carrying their gear. My first thought is: wind is your friend, not your enemy. My second thought: if they cant use wind to their advantage on the solid ground how they perform on the water? Work smarter, not harder :) tip for next video: few tips how to get in and out of the water throught bigger beach break? When to go to water, what to look for, some tips how to see when its "safe" and when its not etc

Great tipps, carrying the sail on the head often pushed down the sail to my head so now it’s clear how to use the wind more effectively. How about taking care of the carbon fin? I guess you lift the cover just before heading back one more time to get on the Neo, and keep the board upside down? I’m also struggling with bringing foil board and sail to the water a bit. Usually I take the board with foil there first, but it’s a bit risky with kids playing at the beach etc.

For carrying the rig as one unit: What I've been doing lately is connecting the sail + board and then flipping the board fin-up so it's lying on top of the sail. Then I flip the harness line over the fin so that it holds the board in place. You can then fly the rig or carry it on your back. I don't know how bad it is/isn't for the sail to carry it on your head, but carrying it on your back seems to distribute the forces a lot more evenly.
@Nico_GER7
@Nico_GER7 Жыл бұрын
That sounds very interesting. I wouldn’t wanna do that with an expensive fin, but I see the advantage. I wonder if this will be hard to control in shifty and strong wind. What do you mean by carrying on your back? I don’t get how that would look.
@CharlieCushing
@CharlieCushing Жыл бұрын
@@Nico_GER7 So yeah, carrying it on my back...It's pretty undignified. I just bend over instead of standing upright and then find the balance point like you were demonstrating on your head. I've tried it before on my head, too, but I think it's most likely too much strain on the sail = bad idea. If the wind is strong enough, I just let the sail fly and hold it at my waste by the mast + footstrap with the tip of the sail slightly downwind. Honestly, I think the way you're showing it in this video is probably safer for the gear all-round. I can see a risk of the harness line chipping the sharp edge of a performance fin. And even on the flat of my shoulders/back, there's still pressure on the sail and that should be minimized whenever possible. When I'm too tired after a session, though, this technique I'm describing seems to require the least amount of energy when I want to get the entire rig back in a single trip.

I'm working at a windsurf station so carry kit full time and this was still super useful, I'll definitely try the extension trick at some point. Any chance you could do this for the foil too? even though I only have 25 meters to go or so, I tend to bring the board down and follow with the rig which isn't really ideal when it's super windy

Hello Nico, very good tutorial with good insight! But I have a question: how instead do you get the gear out of the water smoothly? At my spot the sand goes quickly down (or up when you walk out of the water) so it's hard to lift everything, and I always separate the rig from the board, but that leaves the board floating around in the waves and usually reaches goes ashore by the time I'm back. Is there a better way?

When you set down your board it sits on the fintip which can get damaged over time. In the video you have the cover over the fin. But fin covers easily break / tear at the fintip when you set the board down like that. Not sure what to do.
