Thanks for the tutorial! I have carved a lot of spoons without a hook knife - just using a Flex curved gouge, which works fine. Spoons are a lot of fun to carve, and it is addictive, not to mention how relaxing and meditative it is too. Thanks again!

Is scaly birtch good for makin spoons? I'm in Southern Illinois and not sure what trees are good for makin spoons and bowls out of. I tend to use what I make.

Fruit woods are usually highly desirable. Usually, pines are avoided just for the softness. Oak has lots of arguments because of the grain.
