How to Carve a Tatting Shuttle

Thank you for sharing this, I would love to see some of your finished shuttles! They sound magical! There are inexpensive dremmel tools on line and through Harbor Freight tools that may help you make these faster/easier if you do want to sell them. Do not sell the hand carved ones for 20$ though! No tatter i know would want to steal those beautiful tools.

Thank you Tammy, I can't wait to have a go! I guess you make two pieces, then just carve out another piece with a hole in it for the thread, and then glue the two pieces to it?

Yes. Its easier to start with wood that is flat and 3/8” inch thick. You can order knife scales from wood craft. Be careful to get wood. They also have a different kind thats much harder. Cherry would be a good choice for a first attempt. Because the exotic woods are very much harder woods. www.woodcraft.com/categories/knife-scales

@@TammyMcGowan I was thinking that very thing!! I live in Australia and all our woods are hardwood!! Except plantation grown pine - how would that go do you think?

@@CousinJennie You could contact this wood craft supplier in Adelaide Australia and ask him. I believe he ships all over Australia He could best recommend which Australian woods might work best. It does need to be a hard wood. Its easier to work from flat wood that is already 3/8” inch thick. Wood knife scales are usually a good option to start from.
