There are much less expensive bailess reels than the nearly $1,000 Van Staal.

Wow… the best explanation I’ve seen yet. I have been gun shy to convert my Vanstaal reels over to this configuration. I will have to try it myself on someone else’s reel first.

In the 1970's i bought a Crack 300 reel which was big and learning from the pros i was told to remove the bail for better control and by using the trigger finger and only the trigger finger it made it easier to remount the line on the line roller. After so many years it just becomes second nature as for the bail it's just not needed. Peace.

Interesting, thanks for the comment. I'm tempted to try the newer Van Staals, apparently they've improved the line lay compared to this older model.

What happens if a big fish hits on the splash down and takes off before you can use your finger to get the line back on the roller? Isn’t there a risk to getting injured by the running line on a big fish without the bail available to slam down in an emergency?
@anglersbureau Жыл бұрын
I can see how that might be a theoretical possibility. Not happened to me yet - the times I've had instantaneous hits (e.g. using a popper) the line is already on the roller. It's become such an automatic thing that I think the line is back on the roller the instant before splash down. Good point though.

I was about to ask the exact same thing. This happens with me all the time, mostly bonitos like to strike on the drop if they're in a frenzy. I have the exact same concern and now more research is needed before I order one.

Arrr I shouted “nooo!” and cringed when your submerged your reel. There was no need to subject us to such horror, we would have believed you! 😅 Great video, I did wonder how it worked without a bail, although the waterproofing and longevity are still the most attractive features for me. Maybe I will have to try one out.

Ha! Sorry! But yes, this thing is like the Toyota Landcruiser of the fishing reel world, just highly dependable. Van Staal has some bailed models (that can be converted to bailess too). Thanks for your comment.

Great video, now i understand how it is done. one question on the reel. how do you find the drag on the VS series ?
@anglersbureau2 жыл бұрын
I've no issues with the drag to report, easy to adjust and makes a satisfying sound. Seems to be pretty powerful too.
@ShorrockPaul2 жыл бұрын
@@anglersbureau ok is just that nearly every review of the VS series says the drag is sticky, maybe that is just on the larger models under more load ..
@anglersbureau2 жыл бұрын
@@ShorrockPaul Maybe. Not something I've noticed on this reel. It's around ten years old and well run in, and any stickiness wasn't something I noticed when it was new either. The main thing I had to get used to was the stiffness of the handle. It's not that it isn't easy to wind, it's just that I was used to Japanese reels with multiple bearings with a handle that would spin multiple times with minimal effort.

Great Demo, it seems like a regression from having a bail, though...? other than the fact that there is less to screw up when your buddy steps on your reel, seems like a gust of wind on a slack line might be cause for some frustration.

How does it line up tho when you get slammed and line is running out super fast? I could see it being hard to get it to capture on the roller no?
@anglersbureau4 ай бұрын
It's a good point, one that others have made here too. It's never happened to me is all I can say, the line is on the roller a few fractions of a second before the lure has actually hit the water.

Love your set up, specifically the rod. I have an 11 Ft Daiwa Whisker which I use for Bass fishing. Sadly it’s a 3 piece rod; I really like the concept of 6 or 7 piece rod designed for travelling.
@anglersbureau2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The rod is a beauty and I've always had a soft spot for the Hardy Smugglers, and travel rods in general, not so much for actual travel but just being able to carry everything in a backpack with hands completely free.

What if you get a fish right when it lands before you're able to put the line back on the line roller?
@chrisjones72011 ай бұрын
Right before your lure/bait hits the water you use your index finger to prevent more line from coming off your spool.
@chrisjones72011 ай бұрын
Also, you should always hold your reel in between your pinky and fourth finger for better line and casting control with your index finger each time you cast.
