I had already talked to my guy about a week ago asking if he can hold me one, I think maybe he's only receiving like 10 gold.

Is the unibody machined complete from stock, or does it start as a casting or forging, and then get machined?

Guess they’re not telling… I purchased a VS250 from the Edge back in 2008, I believe it was. I was told by someone who worked there it was the first year they moved production to China. I have no issues with the way the reel performed and I logged some good memories with it in the surf…One thing I did notice was some weird porosity that showed up (and has a tendency to oxidize) centrally located on the underside of the reel foot, specifically where the stem meets the foot on the other side (try to visualize what I’m describing) So it kind of made me wonder if any of these reels aluminum parts start their life as a casting, and then receive finish machining 🤔, or are truly completely machined from billet,which is more desirable in terms of strength/ durability… I’m not saying this is definitely proof of how these are manufactured, but I thought I’d pose the question for the benefit of those purchasing the product on the basis of the companies claims 😉

How much does a VSX200 weigh in comparison to the new version? Also what does this mean for service and parts on the previous models? Definite progress on the AR clutch but most of the upgrades seem to me to aimed at catching fisherman. These reels are always just going to be tools to me and as long as the old models will continue to be serviced I’ll stick with my original VS200.

Will there ever be a bailed VSX2 300? I would looove to use that reel for tunas but I do not really like bailess reels. Especially in this one there is too much flex in the rotor without a bail. An aftermarket rotor with a bail would be great, too. I think a bailed VSX2 300 could be huge competition for saltigas and stellas.

Great question, we wholeheartedly agree a bailed 300 would be a great option. We have not heard anything about it but hope it comes out in the future!

i have a strange qustion. i use my reels low on the butt for surf casting. if i use a bail less reel low down and reel with my left hand will i be able to 'catch' the line as i will have my left hand by the reel not my right...if you see what i mean. With my conventional casting outfit i have no problem of course as i am controlling the reel drum with my left hand and reeling with right. it seems to me that using bail less as low butt casting i would need a reel that had lever on left BUT also spool tuns like the real lefty reel you have developed...

Would you recommend this over the vsx-150? I placed an order on a vsx-150 and debating canceling due to the new release. I have never used a van staal before so I wonder if 27 in of line retrieve is too slow? I mainly fish the beach and piers from time to time so I need help in determining if line retrieval would be an important factor to look at.

It is a factor, fishing this season is also factor, these reels wont come out until late fall. Are you mostly fishing for striped bass?

There is not a kit for that at this time, I am not sure if there is one coming out in the future

What's the fix for the line rub issue when drag is being taken out?

same as the previous x-series, it doesn't seem to be an issue, it's a smooth surface, and the line also rubs on the smooth surfaces of your guides. We've tested these reels and personally know a few of product testers who fished these reels hard for a long time, none of them had any issue

Is there any difference in casting distance capibility of the VSB200X2(weight 25.1oz) and the VR200 (weight 19.6oz)? I just purchased the St croix Legend surf spinning rod 12 ft GSS120MHMF2 (weight 15.1oz) and was wondering which reel would balance best for this rod. Thanks

Great question! The VSB200X2 would balance that rod out better weight-wise. I don't think either reel will have a significant impact on the distance you'll be able to cast, but X2 will be a better fit on that rod.

Apart from the ability to convert to bail less what is the difference between the VR Gen2 compared to the VSX2. it has same drag and is also sealed...

The drag is the same as the VSX not the VR Gen2. Those reels have different drags

@@SaltwaterEdge Ah understood. i really am trying to decide betwen the VSX (Bailed) the VSX2(Bailed) and the VR Gen2. Am hearing there are some wobble issues with the VSX2 the rotor wobbles out of the box. am on fence with the VSX2 till i hear more feedback. I live in West Africa so is a one hit thing. when i buy i have to hang onto it for a long time, service it myself. am leaning towards the tried and tested VSX250 bailed , i like the sound of the VSX2 but bit concerened about the wobbling issue

I'm looking at the specs of the 100 vs 150 (x2 series), I'm not seeing a lot of differentiation - what would you say the big differences are?

The 150 size is pysically larger and heavier which can balance out longer rods. The 150 also has a slower retrieve which is more geared toward surf fishing whereas the 100 has a faster retrieve more suited for inshore and boat fishing

@@SaltwaterEdge absolutely. Can’t wait to go check it out. The weight of 100 and 150 is pretty much the same. The 100 has more line per crank with less line complicity but the 150 and up (except 300) has less line per crank but with more line complicity. It would been nice if the 150 and up has the same gear ratio as the 100.

What environments and species are you targeting? The 100 is an incredibly versatile reel but there are some situations you may want to go up to the 150

Fishing in the sound for stripers and blues. Mainly beach with some rock hopping. Pencil popping 80% and bucket tails, swimmers, etc the rest.

I have had 3 Van Staals and i will never buy another. They have discontinued the service kits and made getting parts too difficult. All links to kits and parts on their website are deactivated. I guess they think i'm dumb enough to give them another $800, because they made parts too difficult to get for the VS and VSX.Its sad how they are treating their customers.

i have a van staal vsx 200 and sometimes when i cast the roller will catch the line without me manually doing it it results like a closed bail how do i fix it?

You will want to make sure the spool is in the up position and the handle is in the down position, that should fix any issue!

Ok try making sure the line roller is on the left of the line when you cast. You may have to adjust where the line roller starts based on your casting style. Try a few different positions casting the same lure and you should find the sweet spot

I just don't understand why van Staal have so many left hand retrieve only reels! I fish right handed with all my reels. I will never buy one that doesn't one that doesn't allow switching. And don't call it a Lefty!

I’m not quite sure what you are saying but VS makes both left and right handed models in almost all sizes for the VSX2. By not allowing you to switch the handle they are making the reel more waterproof

They upgraded the internal components including a titanium slider, the body is also now one piece which further reduces the chance of water getting in. If you are fishing hard these upgrades matter a lot

We fish a lot of the X Series reels and cant complain but we do love to see the technology and boundaries of what reels can do pushed. If companies weren't doing that we would still be fishing 704 reels with classic mono. They worked but the sport has grown with the advent of new and improved technologies

Own both brands and ZeeBaas is a more superior reel in my opinion. Unlike the Zee, Vans been coming out with newer gens and models. They also looking for improvements or ways to market their reels. Kinda feel bad for the the guys who bought the VS. Later on they came with the China VS to the China VSX, and now the China VSX2. You buy a VS series to only be discontinued in a few years and loose it value. As for the Zee, It American made, easier to maintain, interchangeable spools, and just a more solid reel that hold its value!
