I should've watched this before I tried this reel. I did literally EVERYTHING wrong. Never used it before. Used braided line, not enough weight and no follow-through. I'm 66 years old and finally got me one a couple days ago, as a youngster dad had one, one day i casted it bout 20 foot and nested it. I set it down to get my pole ready (a zebco) came back to launch it and dad's pole was gone. Had to work 2 summers to pay that off. So I got this one a Lews combo started watching vids on u tube, kept nesting and nesting and well you know. Then I found your vid and you guessed it nested. So I listened closely. Of all the ones I listened to, I finally heard bout the wait of the lure, I didn't hear any I watched say a thing bout that. Thank you so much. I run 15lbs braid on my spinning setup, no problems at all. However I will be getting a bait caster for heavy cover and frogging with 40-50lbs braid.

Just bought my first Baitcaster and instinctually set it up like that before even seeing the video! Great video by the way! I only got one backlash in about a hundred casts because I halted my cast halfway through, like I would sometimes do with my spinning reel. I've just always been a spinning reel guy (lots of trout fishing here in Mass). And now I'm looking to cast out big savage gear pulse-tail swimbaits for those largemouth water pigs. My dad bought a baitcaster way back in the day for us to practice with and he got pissed with it and returned it before I could even learn LOL.

thank you did try braid not only was it sticky coming off the spool nightmare to control so took it off,only had 18lb mono so stuck that on 100% better,so ill practise a bit with this then drop it down to 12 or 15 lb

Hi there. Thanks for sharing this tips! I am a bigginner and I am going to do mainly saltwater fishing (from the beach). Would you stll reccomend baitcasting or better stick to spinning? You know, in Italy baitcasting is not very popular, and anglers suggest not to use it for sw. The tipical cons I hear are: the backlesh is going to be an issue because of the wind, the casting will be limited wrt spinning, the dirt is going to be a huge drawbak for the reel, the salty water will cause corrosion issue to the reel, etc... I think it's more a problem of getting outside of a comfort zone, but I wouldn't like the idea to buy a casting rod & reel and then realize they are useless for sw fishing. Finally, it there a goog combo you would reccomand for what I have in mind (I'll be using it mostly from shore and from rocks, never in frashwaters). Ciao e grazie, luciano

I throw nothing but a spinning reel. Too much crap to deal with adjusting a baitcaster depending on the lure weight. This year I've caught at least 20 five and six pounders, 4 seven pounders and 1 eight pounder all on a Abu Garcia vendetta and a Kast King sharky 3 spinning reel. Make fun all you want, but my setup simply catches fish.

The problem is you don't have to use spool tension. Only brakes. The spool tension knob is basically training wheels.

abu garcia makes decent cheaper baitcasters. flair just did a video with a $40 vs $400 baitcasters. the cheaper one was an abu garcia and they didnt have much bad to say about it

With the Curado DC, i will put it on 4, should i still tighten up the tension knob as u explained to learn the overhead cast? For the over head cast, a video I watched suggested that on the back swing motion that i not go back past my ear (as if i was throwing darts on the wall) to reduce backlash. What do u think of that tip? Or what would be the proper arm swing motion, etc?

So they can get the feel for a baitcaster without the backlash. The day I taught my boys within a few hours I had them thumbing the spool and they were a couple of pros in no time. I feel the tighter adjustment in the beginning gave them more confidence.
