One tip I picked up a couple years ago is to do a couple practice casts to get your distance. After a cast pull another 10 feet or so off the spool and then cover the spool with a piece of electrical tape. The tape is long enough to cover the spool but not overlap. Reel your line in covering the tape. When you get a bird’s nest it won’t go deeper than your electrical tape and is amazingly easy to clear. Since then I’ve done that on all my bait casters. I don’t birds nest the spool very often anymore but when it does it’s minimal and so easy to clear. Hope this idea will helps others.

At 66 years old i finally bought a Catfish Special and learned to use a baitcaster. Works great, several hours in the yard practicing with a socket. I have not had a single birds nest while fishing the Arkansas river with a Carolina rig with a 3 ounce flat sinker.

I’ve been fishing my entire life and have never understood why to even bother with bait casters? Too many variables to worry about fiddling with instead of fishing. I’ve also never been able to get the same casting distance vs spinning gear. The only niche I’ve ever really found them them better for was using bass gear to walk the dog with a Zara spook to catch feeding blue fish in salt water if I stumble onto a school. Would love to understand the appeal if I’ve completely missing something over the past 40 years. I just don’t see what makes them worth the potential for trouble especially if you prefer to use lighter gear.

@@troymuni6120 the accuracy and control you have is unmatched by the spinner don’t give me wrong I love a spinner and always bring one with me but ever since I got a bait caster I fell in love tossing weightless worms across ponds with 98% accuracy I feel I can fling weight less baits way farther with a bait caster than a spinner

Idk about you guys but I'd much rather cast 10 times (to tune) with the brake and spool tension too tight than that first loose cast and nest it instantly. Sometimes that single bad cast can ruin your entire day out. I carry 3 to 5 rods and I've nested all of em in a 2 hour span! Bad day without a doubt! This guy has it figured out. Thanks for the video! Insanely helpful.

That's a bad day! There's several tutorials on KZbin on how to properly adjust your reel, maybe that's the problem, you still have to be careful casting into the wind with lighter baits, maybe keeping your thumb lightly on the spool will help in the meantime

Great info! My Dad taught me all this back in the 70's on the original Lew's Speed Spool. We loved those reels. We literally wore them out. They developed a gap between the spool and the body of the reel and the line would get in there and snap. I still have those reels. Great keepsakes. Great memories!

I still have my first Lew's Speed Spool reel, a BB1-N that I bought in 1969. Good reels. I remember buying it on sale for $69.95. It had the V spool, which minimized backlashes, but really didn't have that much line capacity as compared to many reels today but it was still a good reel.

Just one other tip in casting... I remember Roland Martin saying that is important to 'load up the rod tip' when you're casting as well, and it's just a little bit easier with a fast action rod. When you're casting and you load the rod tip, you're creating tension between the lure and the spool, and when you release, the lure will travel the same speed as spool due to the tension.

Very informative, very personable. I took my first baitcaster out for the maiden voyage yesterday. I couldn't cast more than ten or fifteen yards, I'm thinking the brake on the right was too tight. Excellent description of how to set the brakes, thanks. Needless to say with as short as my casts were, I didn't catch anything. I hadn't caught a fish in 15 years. Switched back to the spinning reel, threw out some glittery salmon eggs, was JUST about to check the bait and change it out for a chunk of peanut butter Clif bar, when I got a bite. I proceeded to land a HUGE rainbow trout, my first fish in 15 years (to be fair I had only been fishing 5 or 6 times) and the largest fish I've ever personally caught...19 inches😯. I am looking forward to using the techniques I've seen here to at LEAST get my baitcaster out to a usable cast length. Thanks

I bought a cheapish combo to learn with, very glad I did. I got a 6'6 Medium Heavy Fast Action rod for like 20$ and a 40$ Flueger baitcaster. Cheap cheap cheap, but it taught me everything I needed to know for when I want to dabble in something more expensive. I find the cheaper baitcasters are always better to learn on because newer and more expensive reels have things to help eliminate backlashes. Trust me, I was ripping braid out of my reel for a good two weeks before I bought Flouro and went out with the right settings lol. Worth it.

If you're using braid around rocks, and not fishing topwater, use a mono or floro leader, it's better than braid for rocks. If you're like me and you use one of these for catfishing and large baits/weights, keep your thumb on the line when you cast, and stop it the moment it hits the water, you can let go after. If you don't, the big bait/weight will cause a backlash as the bait slows way down but the spool is still going full speed. If your adjustments are made right, this will be the only way you'll really backlash, and it's preventable with a quick stop and release as the bait hits water.

Thanks for a great video. I am about to change over from a fixed spool reel to a bait caster (Multiplier) for my lure fishing for pike. After watching this video at least now I know the basics of setting the reel up properly to minimize backlashes.

When you set the reel tension knob, you really aren't looking to stop backlash, per say, it's actually spool 'over run'. In other words, the spool should stop rotational movement simultaneously as the lure hits the ground. If the tension is adjusted way to light while doing this initial adjustment, of course there will be backlash on a cast, but not while making adjustments, the spool may overrun, but it is easily corrected. Most real backlashes are hard to impossible to work back out. The main cause of backlash after proper adjustments are made, is forcing the cast to make a distance that exceeds all adjustments, and/or without feathering as he mentioned. Your thumb should always be almost touching the line after it is raised off the spool when the cast is started, so a major backlash can be halted. I started baitcasting on a 1940s Shakespeare bare essential, non- levelwind reel, no magnetics, just a spool tension adjustment on both sides of the reel. Master one of those, and these modern reels ARE virtually 'backlash-free' as some manufacturers claim.

Man. I bought my first bait caster (Lews) and was about to throw it in the trash and stick to my trusty spinners. But I figured I would give it one more shot, untangled the nest from my last cast, and found this video. After I tuned it up like you showed, I put a weight on the end of my leader and threw a few dozen casts in my backyard. Had a minor nest early on but she was easy to untangle and after I got the hang of feathering the spool, I was hitting targets with sniper precision from one side of my yard to the other. Can’t wait to throw some casts at the lake with it now. Thank you man!

One thing stopping the reel as soon as it hits the water is vital . Recently bought a Curado dc shimano say to only take out the movement in the reel and not to tighten it to slow it down . With trepidation I did my first cast did birds nest a bit it was trivial , giving a more concerted effort it worked really well but in the case of the reel to be trouble free you must stop that reel as soon as it lands with your thumb . I used setting two of four which is for braid have not tried setting one yet which is the least assistance .

I'll try to help explain the backlash... lol: Ex: When casting, the amount of force you use determine the speed of the spool. Let's say its 1000rpm with the first setting you did in this video. Hypothetically, let us say that makes your lure travel at 30mph. With wind pushing against the lure, it slows the lure down to 28mph. The spool however is still spinning at 1000rpm. This means that the line going out is being backup due to the slowing lure. In turns it makes the dreaded backlash.* * Numbers are just made to be simple and in no way close to real mathematical and physics applications.** ** before the mathematicians come correcting my math.

As a follow-up there are just two comments I’d like to share with those interested. One thing I found useful years ago (as a right handed person) is to either purchase left hand crank reels or buy reels that allow the user to move the crank to the left side. I know it sounds crazy but using this tackle reversed is immediately so much better because you don’t have to switch the rod to the other hand after a cast. Secondly, I’ve found that a good quality braided line tends to be less prone to backlash. And if it does backlash, it is usually easier to work out than even a high quality mono line. Well worth the distance you may lose on a cast.

Another great video. Makes me feel old when you have to explain feathering. My early bait casters didn't have diddly to stop the dreaded bird's nest. You learned to feather the reel or went to spinning combos. I still feather my reel - even when I've got the drop test perfect. Just seems natural to feel the line ripping off the reel. TRF is my favorite fishing channel; keep up the great work!

Great info!!! Looking forward to Part 2. I’m, by no means, a professional nor would I say I’m an expert at throwing bait casters, but I can throw them with little to no backlashing. I mostly fish from the bank (working on restoring a 12ft Jon Boat). What I sometimes do and it aggravates me when it happens is hitting a low hanging tree limb at the top of my cast. That will cause a HUGE backlash! So, check your surroundings before casting. 😁👍

Good video. Dude you need to swap to a LH reel, it will feel weird for a few days...but after a bit you will sell all you RH reels! It's the ergonomics...every time you cast you have to swap rod to left hand. Most folks are right handed, so with RH reel setup, you're playing the fish with your weaker left arm and winding with your strong right arm, but your casting with right arm. I'm a pro guide in Scotland and we get many American guests that were given a RH reel when they were young. Try it. It might seem a small change, but if you're fishing professionally or hours a day, ergonomics and comfort are important.

it's all about practice. the way I learned was by using heavy weight lures with 65 lb braid. it's all about uaing the load of the road and not allowing to much snap or whip in your casts when you start out. take a 5 gallon pale a put some water in it. swing it back and forth without swishing the water around. that's how it should feel when your casting.

I've used the magnetic brakes , thumb , and hand crank methods . With the thumb on my 10' rod I can't stop the reel with darker lures due to the 10' lobs them farther than what my eyes will allow to see and get backlash , sometimes . With the brakes on I feel it doesn't go as far as brakes off and even though I set the brakes as recommended I do sometimes get backlash , usually during times of unexpected wind . If I remember with using the crank , I would have to push the release button again to get the lure or bait to drop where I intended it to land after it hits water , otherwise it'll come short of target area if in really deep water .

I just got my first bait caster for Christmas and I’m loving it already! But I did have 2 back lashes already so it’s pretty frustrating to deal with. Going to see if switching to a lighter line will help. 17lb test seems a bit too much for the reel.

I’d always used spinning reels but finally broke down and bought my 1st baitcaster several years ago, a Quantum Escalade on a 7’ 6” Carrot Stix Wild. Not knowing any better, my 1st 3 casts equaled 3 birds nests, which subsequently led to my new setup going unused for the rest of the season. lol Wish I’d had this tutorial back then! Fortunately I did take the time to learn how to adjust and throw it, and I’m glad I did. Love your vids, keep up the good work and hello from Maine!

It's about understanding the breaks of the reel and adjusting it to the friction from air and the eyelets of the pole. Once you get the hang of that you will never go back to spinning reels. Precision and distance is so much better
@troymuni6120
@troymuni6120 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been trying them off and on since the 90’s. The only way I’ve ever gotten more distance casting vs spinning is with heavy baits of 3/8oz. Minimum of 1/4oz but even that is asking for trouble. The physics of not having any resistance to slow down the spool on a spinning reel make it hard for me accept a bait caster could ever outcast spinning. Factor in everything you need to worry about to not end up with a birds nest, they’ve never seemed worth the hassle. I’ve always just avoided them except for niche situations. I also find it more enjoyable and productive to go as light as possible with my gear.
