A deviation from the airgun videos. How to catch a mole the easy way using tunnel traps. I am plagued by moles this time of year as they migrate out of the farmers field into my garden. This is how I deal with them to ensure quick humane kills.

Wasted a lot of time looking at other videos before I got to Steve's video. Steve explains the mole thinking process and habits which are invaluable in placing those traps expertly. I have already forked out a small fortune to get mole catchers into my garden so thankful to Steve for saving me a bunch

Terrific video for first-timers! You can start at 9 minutes if you want to get to the meat of the matter. I ordered these traps from England after my professional mole trapper told me he thought these were the best mole traps a person can buy. Okay! Now I will give them a try! Thanks for the video!! As usual a clear presentation and one that follows the old adage, tell them what you're going to tell 'em; tell 'em; then tell 'em what you've told 'em. and then for good measure you repeat. Well done. I find keeping your traps in a bucket of earth using their mole hills helps with masking your scent as they are quite good at avoiding poorly laid traps. this year I had a daddy mole in our lawn which got into a gravelled patio area were it was difficult to trap as it was going under a flagged area. I found a chemical repellant eventually worked to drive him away to a grassed area where I was able to trap him. I use scissor traps which are easier to set though I've also used tunnel traps with success. I generally use a bucket over the top on a lawn as it is easier to check and keeps the light out and scissor traps because the jaws protrude above ground, flag up when they have been sprung.I hope your next video covers hunting moles with airguns, that will be a challenge.Reddenning

A marvelous presentation of mole trapping with this particular type of trap, in this type of terrain, consistent soft level ground. Around my home in Tennessee over a 3 yr period, using this and 6-7 other types of traps, I trapped 81 moles! It was such fun! The last season however I only got 3!! One might say “well, you got most of them.”But there was clear evidence of more activity than ever-ruined lawns ! Anyway-I QUIT THIS OBSESSION-The MOLES WIN! They apparently SEE OR SENSE MY TRAPS THEN DIG OVER, UNDER OR AROUND ALL TYPES OF TRAPS I SET OUT!! It remains a complete mystery to me and I give up! GOOD LUCK TO WHOEVER GOES FOR THE MOLE.

Hi, I've used Victor traps for years but decided to try the tunnel traps. I purchased a couple and set as you instructed. My problem is that apparently they are digging under the trap and setting it off with dirt. Can you offer any suggestions? Thanks
@airgunology
@airgunology 6 жыл бұрын
It happens if you are not putting the trap into the tunnel cleanly in a part of the run with a straight line run. Also any soil you leave in the tunnels the mole will back fill and set off the trap. Ensure you find a straight section of tunnel and make sure you pat down and clean the tunnels so it appears as if they are perfect.

Good luck, they get smart at times and placement of the trap is very important to put it in a straight line run. This can be difficult if your moles are like mine and like to zig and zag a lot underground.

Keep at it and pay attention to the videos and instruction. You'll get the hang of it. My favorite mole trap is the Victor 'Out O Sight' scissor type - never had a miss with these, but they do take longer to set up. My place is very sandy and the moles are very prone to dig under the duffus/half-tunnel traps like this since it is hard to keep fine sand from falling in the tunnel in the trap area. My normal solution is not to cover with dirt, but to place a large, light-tight ceramic flower pot over the trap to keep the light and moving air out of the tunnel. If they still dig under, I just push the trap deeper into the new tunnel and usually snare the mole on its next transit. Once, I even caught two moles - one in each end of the trap on the same set!

Hi Steve. The triggers on your traps are set too far forward. . "in direction of travel". . . your mole should be caught under the arm pit and not down the body.. . . . Bend them back so they are 1 to 1.1/4 inches from the catching loop. This is then deamed a Humane Kill as it hits the heart & lung area. . . . . Good Shooting to ya !

They can be tricky little critters to catch. I have had one in my garden for 1 month and failed too. The trick is to find a straight tunnel not close to a mole hill and between 2 of them so they just run through. Too close to the hill and the traps are set off by the soil they are excavating.
@metalmicky
@metalmicky 4 жыл бұрын
Easier to just use the mole hill , tunnel in tunnel out, put the trap between the two and cover with a board and seal the edges with soil dirt , the traps should have A & E written on them ! There are better versions available that are less difficult to set.

And you can't state a fact without a similar reasoning / proof :) I know in my garden that when I do put in the dead critter back into the tunnel it "seems" to prolong the time it takes for re-occupation of the tunnel. Combined with the fact that moles are territorial, brings me to this possible theory that it may work. At the very least it doesn't make the situation any worse. :)
@gatisg6701
@gatisg6701 7 жыл бұрын
And I got one more proof today. I caught the neighbours mole and left the body inside the tunnel. Today, after +- two weeks, a new mole has arrived and digging at that very same spot. So... we can nail the dead mole to the wall or dress him up as barby girl. It doesnt really metter :) Life is moving on fast.

What is the point in arguing on the internet. It may work for some like it does with me and of course it could have been an offspring and not a rival male mole. Anyways what harm does it do putting the carcass into the whole on the chance it may work. Pointless internet argument. :)

Hi Steve, you made me laugh by talking about Moles plural as though there are hundreds of them, you need to think about it this way a Mole can dig 15 metres an hour 200m new tunnel a day, throw out 100 x body weight in 20 minutes 6kg earth, it works in 4 hour shifts around the clock continually expanding it's territory. You need to ask yourself where are the other 700 or so visible Molehills ? probably in the fields behind your house they can cover miles at least, a 4 year old mole can have a territory covering several square miles. What I can see in your garden, the Werp to the left is where it has cleared out an existing tunnel, then you have four or so on a feeding run. Because they are messy would say it is a female, take a look closer when your in the fields a males feeding run is fairly straight, female messy. Also look for entry or exit points in Molehills especially where crossing roads and obstacles, Moles come out of the ground more often than I would have believed had I not got interested, males do it more often. Didn't see the Moles you were catching but suspect they were young ones, look at their canine teeth, young ones are like shark teeth with translucent leading and trailing edges, older ones they become more needle like. When you kill and remove one another one will take over almost immediately or at most 3 days, I think you need to put the dead Mole back underground then they stay away longer. According to an old boy in the village Moles come onto the surface to die and he has worked the land since being a child.. Happy Gunning and Moleing.

Have a look around for a very big mole hill, known as a fortress. There you will catch a senior Sow and Boar and the rest seem to eminate from there. I found a university study from 1931 fantastic reading and had the opportunity to wipe out a whole colony absolutely text book. Airgunning I have a Beeman Grizzly dual cal.
