Great video Starlo, how much money would you recommend spending, for a beginner flathead fly outfit, for someone that's never used one before, and can you easily use it for land based fishing, I would love to get into it at some stage, so thanks for feeding my obsession, as i love my flathead fishing,

Thanks Anthony! Spend a reasonable amount on a rod. At least $300, I reckon. It’s the most important tool. Next most important is the line. An intermediate (slow sink) is a good starting point. You won’t get much change out of $150 for a decent line. The reel is the least important component but get one that won’t corrode and give it a rinse in freshwater after use. There’s no need to spend more than about $100 to $150 on a reel. Add $20 or $30 bucks for some backing (used braid will do the job). So I guess you’re up for about $600 all-up, unless you can track down some second hand gear. Good news is you can use it for a range of species in fresh and saltwater. 👍

@@StarloGetsReel Thanks champion, you have given me a lot to think about, being on a budget I am tossing up between the fly set up , or a rod and reel to chase kings in and around Sydney Harbour, and all my fishing is land based, so i need to think about which set up i would get the most use out of, so thanks for the help, much appreciated Starlo,

@@anthonycox1870 no problems. I must say, I think you'd probably get more use from the kingy set-up. Fly can always come later. 😉

@@anthonycox1870 You can get into fly fishing cheaper if you want to see if you like it first, eg. Maxcatch VAccess rod, Eco reel, fly line gets you into fly fishing for around $100. It's not as good as top notch gear of course, but I've landed 2kg salmon on such a setup and it did it easier than my $600 Daiwa spinning set did. There's also South Pacific from A1 fly fishing who do a good starter combo. However, without casting tuition you'll likely struggle to get anything shore based.

Kingies on fly are awesome although the bigger versions are a handful! 12-weights and heavy tippets…
