HOW TO CATCH MANGROVE JACK (made simple!!)

Hey guys and girls!
I made this video as just last year, I still hadn't caught a Mangrove Jack at all and never knew where to start, however by doing a few simple things I started catching them! I share these tips with you, and hopefully you can go catch some Mangrove Jack yourself!

Exactly the video I was after! Also decided I want to catch a Jack and never have! All the other videos on MJs are lure based. Keep seeing all the post of the SCF page, I decided I have to give this a try! Old mate I see at the Mooloolah boat ramp reckons thats what would have been biting me off at the bridge further up, not Tailor!

That’s awesome Conway, I’m glad you found it helpful! 😁 Live bait is a great way to target them mate, I’ve caught winter whiting, herring, and mullet in the Mooloolaba canals in my cast net but if worst comes to worst you can just use strip baits too. They definitely get them around those bridges up there, and around any big/rough structure really! There have been a lot around on the Sunshine Coast lately 👍

Hahaha yeah mate that’s definitely fair enough 😂 I sorted out a better combo too, but it was just to show beginners or people that are struggling for money that you don’t need expensive gear if that’s all they can afford. It’s obviously not ideal, but yeah. That combo definitely landed plenty of Jacks, Spanish mackerel, and snapper for me now that I think about it 😂 Tight lines bro 👌🎣

@@willkitching true. An expensive combination doesn’t turn a bad fisherman into a good one. But if you are good, it certainly makes you better. And Jacks are pretty ruthless. They punish any mistake. My main plastics outfit is only 8-14 pound but it’s high quality, casts like a dream and smashes Jacks.

The mustad hooks are great I use them offshore aswell for snapper etc changed over from gamakatsu hooks

Nothing wrong with mustad hooks at all. I've been catching jacks on the mustad wide gape hooks for decades.

Hi mate thanks for the comment!! 😁 Some popular lures for mangrove jacks are paddle tail soft plastics in 3-5 inch sizes, such as Zman. In terms of hardbody lures, Jackall ‘Squirrels’ are very good, however if you want something more affordable you can look for lures from other brands that look similar, for example brands like Berkley, Duo, Zerek, etc. Other popular hardbodies are the Duo 100dr, and the Lucky Craft ‘pointer’ 100xd. You can also use surface lures, like MMD ‘splash prawns’, or Lucky Craft ‘G-splash’ poppers. I hope this helps mate, Google these lures and have a look or keep an eye out for them in your local tackle shops 👍🎣 hopefully you can nail some Jacks! Thanks for the comment

Hi Will, where can I get live summer whiting and mullet?

Hi Harry, when using Summer Whiting as bait, make sure that they are legal size (23cm in QLD). It would be easier to catch some Winter Whiting as they are the perfect size to use, and easy to catch. Just fish with yabbies in the deeper channels around sand banks, around 2-5 meters deep usually works well. For mullet, if you have a cast net, any drop offs along the edges of creeks, canals, or the Broadwater at the Gold Coast should work. You can also use bread and breadcrumbs as berley, or buy a mullet trap. Hope this helps mate.
