BassResource yup, I'm boatless though so I don't normally have the best of luck. I see carp swimming along the shores during the summer and went numerous times, trying everything i could find and research on how to catch them but never had luck of any sort.

Hi..They opened the sluice gates the day before we went so the water was flowing quit and very dirty. We fished 'sheltered areas' behind lay downs and near jetties.some inlets as well. It was slow. I got a 1.8Kg! (was my birthday too) Between us over 2 days with very changeable weather we got 5 Bass. Not a lot, but under the circumstances. not bad. We have a comp there next week...and it's still raining. thanks again for the advice. :-)

Also, I think it's interesting how similar it is to fish a large river as a small one. I fly fish for trout on small fast rivers often and when you were talking about fishing eddys in the Columbia it just kinda took me by surprise because it's so huge that I don't even think about it producing eddys, ha. I guess they're just super-sized.

Great video! Finally a river fishing video. How would you classify the Delta in terms of clarity? What about marinas, can one use those to switch current intensities when bank fishing a river? Just a hopeful suggestion, maybe explaining the components of the river, like eddy, wingdam, a sharp turn etc. Is there a way to reliably measure the current in terms of, fast or slow current? What 'speed' is the cutoff between a fast and slow current?
@bassresource
@bassresource 7 жыл бұрын
That's a lot of questions! I guess I'll have to make another video. :) I haven't fished the Delta, so I can't comment on that. There isn't a "cutoff" or "speed" measurement, just a "seam" where the 2 different current speeds meet. That can happen as long as there's current - fast or slow.

Another great video. Been fishing the flats and islands on the Columbia with ok results, but haven't been out "chasing" the eddies in the current, gotta try your suggestions. BTW what part of the Columbia do you fish? looks flat and calm compared to Stevenson.... , thanks again Glenn.

Thanks for an overview of river fishing. I've had a difficult time catching fish on rivers because it is difficult to read. Tides, shoreline, shadows, depth all pose a challenge finding bass. What works on one river doesn't necessarily work on another. Where do bass go in the river when the tide changes? Are they supposed to be lazy and stay where they don't need to expel energy? Deeper water? Thanks for any helpful advice.
@bassresource
@bassresource 7 жыл бұрын
Paul, strength of current (or lack of) positions the fish, as explained in more detail in the video. Tides simply influence the strength of the current. Pair that knowledge with the local tide chart, and you'll be able to figure out where the fish should be holding as well as their activity level on any given section of tidal-influenced rivers, for any time of the day.

I fish small rivers in Ohio that flow into the Ohio River. I am able to catch Crappie when they are right at the bank in the spring, I think this is when they are spawning. How can I find them outside of the spawning window? I tried in the ripples today and in the tail-out area. I tried minnow style baits and crappie jigs on a bobber? I get the current break advice, but I have never caught a Crappie in current.

Great information and guidance! One question, how do you fish a slow river in high water? My local river is very slow and dirty. I've had somewhat consistent success at normal water levels but when the water gets high I can't seem to find them. Also this river mainly contains smallies. Thanks!
@bassresource
@bassresource 7 жыл бұрын
As a general rule, fish will move shallow when water rises, and pull off to deeper water when it's receding. So don't look at "high water" so much, but rather, is it rising or falling?

Any advice for fishing dams in a river(especially if they are overflowing)?
@bassresource
@bassresource 7 жыл бұрын
Look for newly flooded areas in backwaters. The fish will move up into them. However they'll just as quickly pull out when the water starts to recede.

To make it easier: on a map. Red markers will always be on the left of a map and green always on the right. They always come in pairs.
@bassresource
@bassresource 5 жыл бұрын
While they do come in pairs, the positioning of them depends on the current flow relative to the direction you're traveling. In your case, you would be traveling down-current (or with the current).
