Great blog Sir! Last time I went sea fishing for Mackerel was 60 years ago, now an old pensioner/carer for my wife, I come across blogs like yours! I had a dozen river/Loch rods and reels which I sold 3 years ago with all the flies! I only fished one or twice a year, so I sold them all bar one, which is an 11 feet heavy rod. I am eaten a lot of fish of late, Mackerel is one of my favourites! Sea bass and trout and wild Salmon when I can afford it! I am going to find time and purchase a bombarda float and give the shore fishing a try! Many thanks!

Fantastic 👍 If you get the time I have a question. I live on Anglesey on the coast catch probably 100s of bass and pollack a year in all weathers and times on all manner of lures and baits including Tobys and the redgill type you mentioned but never touched a sea trout. I've caught lots in rivers but I really want one from the sea. By visual assessment I'd say there are more sea trout where I fish than anything else. Do you think they are just not feeding or would I see some results with this bombarder and fly method, I've already ordered some to try anyway. And if possible could you recommend a metal lure for when I fail with the fly haha. 👍

Hi Daz and thanks for watching and commenting. The bombarda is not the be all and end all but I love fishing it. They do catch fish without a doubt could be just the different action and or speed of retrieve but it works. A great metal lure is Solv Piil by Abu Garcia this can work when all else fails including the bombarda. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255684482912?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=YKtKQE_MTAC&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=poTukoMSSOK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=FB_MSG

Just had my first try with a bombarda, without luck, using an intermediate sinking one using 2 fly type lures, one on a dropper as a "teaser". I noticed using a fast retrieve close to the shore helped avoid getting snagged on weed as the bombarda came to the surface, although I eventually lost the dropper fly, maybe from a mussel shell. Is there any merit to using a bombarda with a metal lure with teaser fly to avoid snagging close in? I'm thinking it might help by if the lure snags higher on the weed rather than the stronger parts near the root. Is braid better for distance casting compared to nylon monofilament of the same breaking strain? Also, you were wearing wellies rather than waders. The estuary near me is gently sloping so I really need to be stood out some way in the water to cast past particularly weedy parts. Would you recommend thigh or chest waders as I'm thinking the chest waders would be more restrictive to movement and therefore tiring?
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question’s Michael and for sharing your adventures with the bombarda. I must admit I’ve never used a bombarda with metal lures. I would just use lures on their own but I sometimes use a small teaser with them. In my opinion definitely get better distance with braid over mono. I don’t have thigh waders, I would much rather have chest waders sometimes it’s necessary to wade beyond the weed line plus I use them for other types of fishing.

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thanks for the reply. Before going on my trip I was looking at different videos on the technique, including yours, and I thought I had seen one using a bombarda with metal lures but couldn't find it again. Since I made my comment I've remembered he prefered very small lures of 4 grams or so and used the bombarda for extra casting weight rather than to bring the lure closer to the surface. Thanks for the advice and I hope to give it another go very soon. I think I'll get chest waders first.

@@garyallen8 Hi Gary, thanks for commenting. I take it SP is a soft plastic? Your soft plastic needs to be streamlined like a red gill which works well. I keep the terminal tackle to an absolute minimum using one swivel and a non-slip loop knot to my lure or fly. When it comes to flies most small baitfish patterns will work as well as shrimp patterns. I have had great success with sand eel flies see link below www.farlows.co.uk/saltwater-bass-sand-eel-eezee-blue-size-6.html Or Tickers Tackle in Helensburgh does a great selection of sea trout flies.

Good video mate. I had a couple of the old small wooden jointed repala plugs (that weigh hardly anything) I revamped them by touching up the paintwork and epoxying them with some glitter. They look brilliant, but so light I can't cast them, other than maybe trolling them behind the kayak. I wondered if they might work with the bombarda set up? Obviously the treble hooks would probably get tangled in the leader when casting so maybe if they had 2 single hooks it might work? Cheers
@PiscatorUK-Fishing

Hi Alex, thanks for your comments mate. I’ve not tried the bombarda with hard lures but you never know. As long as they fly through the air ok and don’t cause to much drag on the cast it might work even with a shorter cast. 100% agree about removing the treble hooks tho.

Hi Is the bombada free running up the leader to Fg And from ur Swivel you have 8/9ft snood I would find that very hard to cast as my lure rod is only 8ft how do you stop the hook from snagging
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, thanks for the questions mate. Yes the bombarda is free running between the swivel and FG leader knot. just fish with a hook length your comfortable casting (max length) you don’t need to cast a long way, but you’ll be surprised how far it does cast without much effort. As for the hook snagging it’s just a bit of trial and error on the venue. If your getting snagged too much then just count down your sink rate once it hits the water and adjust your retrieve accordingly. If your fishing in a really shallow snaggy area then just raise your rod tip a bit as your bombarda approaches the shore.

Right first outing went not to bad, I tried the pre rigged one with basically the set up you described first, which after a little while I ended up removing all those extras we spoke of which I found worked better for me. Fishing well had a bump in the first hour but nowt connected then managed 3 Mackie's a wee while later, I tied some flies up last night so it's good to see those worked as well as they did, all just bait fish patterns really, so yeah great first try it was bloody bright today though and the boats where ferrying passengers from the big ferry out in the forth so water was a bit churned up so didn't expect to get anything but just before high tide seemed to be the time for me. I will just keep plugging away with this need to find a few more marks to go try though. Thanks again for all your help.

have you tried the "thomas hansen" method mate speed spinning? it involves using a fixed bombarda crimped with fluro, it stops the bombarda coming back up the main line and has a great fly turn over and balance when spinning a full pelt with them, another good tip is to rub the floats with a brillo pad it gets the glare off the floats and they blend a bit better on those sunny days, anywhom i digress mate tip top video as always!! 👍👍👍👍

Cheers buddy, not heard of the Thomas Hansen method mate, I will check it out tho. Another subscriber mentioned about taking the shine of the float I think you both have a point as when it’s sunny as it can refract light, like most crystal floats. Thanks for your feedback mate much appreciated as always👍

@@whitetroutchannel no problem mate, lol I get so many comments it’s hard to keep track sometimes. I tend only to use shrimp patterns when fishing over cleaner sandy ground as I normally draw and pause fishing close to the bottom. I’ll check the shrimp patterns out tho👍

Hi, in relation to the sinking Bombarda that you use, which weight / length do you prefer ?
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing 5 ай бұрын
I prefer the 20gram as an all rounder. The only bombardas that seem to have a long stem are the branded ones which I normally cut about 3-4cm off just so it fits in my pocket otherwise I would fish it as they are out the packet.

Thanks for explaining the set up. Which brand of flourocarbon do you use?
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Жыл бұрын
Hi Fergal, I don’t usually stick to the same brand of fluorocarbon but I tend to use drop shot fluoro by fox rage for my rubbing leaders as it’s a bit cheaper. I recently used Scierra fluoro for my hook lengths/leader to fly which I liked, it has great abrasion resistance.

This is a controller float bolt rig designed for surface carp fishing,it has self hooking qualities due to its weight as the fish takes it turns its head,straightens the line and sinks the hook against the mass of the float. I reckon these would be great for mullet. I’ve had carp to 32lb using them. * Obviously I’m talking about the floating version.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I knew these floats were used for carp but didn’t know how the reasoning behind it. You’re explanation makes sense as I am a course angler too, good idea for the mullet as they are buggers to catch👍
