yes i agree and i'm never offended or insulted if someone assumes i know nothing. you can just skip over that part and move on. it takes a real pro to not talk down to others or be all cocky about having skill and knowledge. this is true in any field and if you ever meet these people in person most of them don't act all proud of themselves. they just do good work and know it and don't need to try to impress anybody.

So, I've done tons of caulking over the years. The latex stuff is a breeze. But, silicone caulk takes considerably more mastery, because it is far less forgiving. This is the first time I have attempted this particular method, as Leah demonstrates in the video. I'd like to add couple of tips... First, when caulking in general, don't sever too much from the tube tip. I recommend 1/16", or certainly less than the 1/8" mark embossed on the tube tip. Also, get the angle right, the cut smooth. Allow your trigger pressure to regulate flow, in lieu of hole size. Too much caulk will get you into trouble. I know from experience. Second, if you use a glove, use one that fits VERY snugly over the finger you intend to use for smoothing. A loose fit or a textured glove will leave you with less-than-desireable results. Ask me how I know. Finally, take time with your tape. Ensure consistent gaping, and avoid gaping both too narrow or too wide. It's a little tricky to get just right, but it's critical for premium results. Good luck!

You should also fill the tub 2/3 with water. This will weigh it down while the caulk dries. When it's dry, empty the tub and it springs back up. This prevents the caulk from pulling away and cracking when you fill the tub to bathe.

I remember when I was learning to use a caulking gun. I didn't know about the seal in the tube so I just kept jamming on it and it eventually spurted out the back of the tube and gummed up my caulking gun. Left it over night in frustration, and had to cut the dried silicone off it with a razorblade. Thank you for saving everyone from such noob mistakes. You always do a really thorough job showing people how to use tools. Getting it right the first time cuz someone went that extra mile for you is soooooooo much easier than fumbling around on your own trying to figure stuff out.

I’m so happy I found your channel!! It means a lot to see a woman showing other women that they can do these things ourselves!! I KZbin everything I don’t know how to do. Even changing the hubs, rotors, calipers, and brake pads on my Jeep!! I’ve never done brakes in my life, but yet I installed everything myself and to the specifications of the right torque ft/lbs on the bolts. I bled the brakes by myself with the help of some KZbin videos. I’m quite proud of myself for taking the challenge and saved myself $500 in labor at a shop. So, again thank you for showing what we can accomplish and not feel helpless. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. Nice thing with painters tape and caulking!! I’ve made plenty of messes. Won’t anymore!! 💜

DO NOT use tape. Lay in a smaller than those beads of caulking in to a clean dry space/. Spray with denatured (or isopropyl alcohol and use a Caulk Finishing Tool (Home Depot, Lowes) and you'll be left with a small, perfect bead. spraying alcohol on it after prevents the caulk from sticking to anything but in the crack its already in. That big, wide line of caulk will look HORRIBLE within a year because as we all know- there's actually no such thing as mold-proof silicone- it WILL mold over time. Minimize the silicone and you minimize possible mold
@macforme
@macforme 6 жыл бұрын
makes a lot of sense... but you might do this all the time (?)... maybe for people who don't do this but once or twice in their life ,the tape could save some grief ;-)
@Imken_yesiam_777
@Imken_yesiam_777 6 жыл бұрын
Well someone taught me like I do it and I'm an electrician- and a former carpenter but I've always done it like that. Spraying on the denatured alcohol after you lay the bead prevents it from smearing onto anything else and the caulking tool makes the leftover minimal and makes the end product perfectly uniform so these things eliminate the need for having "the touch" or being terribly experienced or anything. I just know that sooner or later it will mildew no matter what the silicone says on the tube and I'd rather have a very small area for it to do that. Another thing you could do is squirt lots of silicone as much caulking in that crack as possible so no air/no mildew over time. Not saying anyones wrong or I'm better or worse, just putting my two cents in

Hey Leah. Thank you for not skipping over details that a novice really needs to know. I've noticed some of the DIY men often assume we all know the basics, and how to use all the tools. Us girls aren't stupid but I like to be shown properly so that we can do a job just as well as anyone else.

Just moved into a new house with my gf and roommate. It was my first time ever signing a lease and I’m still a handy-novice but have been teaching myself and doing a lot around the house. The shower caulk was a mess around the rim (like it had acrylic in it, peeling like acrylic paint). Thank you for helping me fix it and adding to my handy-knowledge toolbox! Made a bit of a mess but luckily not of the job. 😅👍🏾

+L Lawliet You wet the spoon or your finger to prevent the caulk from adhering to either and pulling additional caulk out of the joint. The instructions to "not let the caulk get wet" really mean "don't use the shower or tub until the caulking has cured". Shower head or lots of splashing water can wash out or damage the seal made by the uncured caulk. The tiny bit of water on the tip of your finger isn't going to contaminate the caulk.

I’m a maintenance worker at a decent sized apartment complex (500+ units) and i literally spent an hour and a half scraping this old, moldy, hard as old taffy caulking in a unit thats been lived in for 11 years... definitely buying a dremmel tomorrow before i go in, cant believe i never thought doing that. What a time saver!!!

I can't believe I didn't think of the tape. Thanks! I wish I had watched this before caulking the bottom of my toilet. I spent nearly an hour getting it to look good and clean up all the access on the tile and toilet. Luckily it looks great, though.

+Brian Maragos Just a little hint, you should never caulk the bottom of a toilet. The reason being, if the toilet seal is compromised you will never be able to tell because the water won't show on the floor. It can end up leaking for a long time and rot the floor. Not good to fall through the floor into the living room or kitchen below. HAHAHA

+jerry leroy I agree with you but you would be shocked at how many plumbers and contractors have told me to caulk the base of the toilet.

Fill the bath with water before sealing. This will make sure that the joint is at its biggest before you seal it. When the bath is emptied again, the joint and sealant will be compressed. This reduces the stress on the sealant when you’re using the bath or shower. no need for arm bands or goggles or rubber duckys, try to seal it while at the side of the bath and not in it. ;) note: Brits, please use 'silicon sealer' and not caulk! caulk in Britain is a different product and is pretty useless for sealing bathtubs.

Yeah what is marketed as caulk in Britain is usually butyl rubber. Really messy stuff that will never dry and is almost impossible to clean up. It is a permanently flexible adhesive/sealant used for roof repairs etc.

DoinThupidThings Would probably be easier to use weights instead of your body weight. Maybe even use weights to replace the need for water weight. Metal is a lot denser than water anyway so it'll take up less room. Much more convenient than sitting naked in a full bath tub trying to apply sealant.
