How To: CBR650F Valve Adjustment

How to actually adjust the valves on your 2014+ Honda CBR650F if they are out of spec.

The 8 washers on the camshaft bracket screws should be replaced with new ones: part #HP-90463-ML7-000.
Shims are 7.48mm in diameter. You can buy aftermarket sets of replacement shims, or you can buy them individually from a Honda distributor. They are ridiculously overpriced. An example of a size 200 shim (2.00mm thick) is part #HP-14933-KT7-013.

In my bike oil is comin out of wire hose near clutch cable.is that a serious issue,if yes how to fix that

3:00 That definitely not "machining", that's physical damage from misuse or abuse (possibly mishandled by assembly workers). Is that face running close to the timing chain?

Huh, you raise an interesting point. I can’t tell if it’s on the side of the timing chain from this video, but 50/50 chance. Not sure if I still have the raw unedited video files. I’ve always kept up on maintenance and it’s asymptomatic, but I’m curious.

Hey there. Great video! Q: Wondering how much miles were on the bike prior to the valve adjustment.. valves look terribly out of spec. Mine is 13K miles, scheduled for a valve check soon. Ruslan.

14896 miles. Mine were mostly at the edge of spec and probably would've been fine without adjustment. But since I was in there, I made them perfect.

Wow! Looks like lots of back breaking labour! I did an oil change on my 500....then put on some heated grips.. And that was hard!! Don't know if I'm cut out for this kind of work... Probably break a bunch of stuff by the time I'm done... How did you go with screwing those bolts? Is there a torque spec?

Yes, all the torques are listed in the manual. Some of the spaces are really tight though, so fitting torque wrenches was a challenge in some places. Thanks for watching!

Burnt OnBothEnds good to know! Funnily enough that's how I broke the left chain tensioner bolt on my cbr500 - by using a torque wrench. Asking the mechanic about that, he said they just eyeball it. He reckoned it was a batch of bad steel :/

The CB500F/X/R and Rebel engine is way easier to adjust valves than this engine. It's truly an amazing little super reliable and durable engine. 😀

Will do: I'll post up the install too. The real test will be the first track day of the season, but I'm not sure when that'll be yet. Not planning on an exhaust. I just don't see a lot of return on that investment, and I'm an eco-weirdo so I want to keep my catalytic converter. If I were to change my mind, Akra would definitely be the way I'd go too.

Motorcycles are good things, until you have to perform a valve adjustment. I would never pay a person - especially if I don't know him very well personally - to have my motorcycle valves checked. The main problem is trust and confidence. You can't tell from the sound of an engine if the valves are out of spec or not. So why bother to pay for a valve check when you will never be able to know if the work has been done properly and with the right accuracy?

when i bought the CB500F 2013 from the Honda Dealer i remember that in the first 1000km a valve check had to be done. when i spoke to the dealer he told ''Nah if you don't hear a tapping noise on the engine then they are fine'' I didn't even reply to him, I gave him my back turned on the motorcycle and went home. I decided to do it myself which surprisingly its was a super easy job to to because on the CB500 engine you don't even need to remove camshafts plus i had the exhaust Valves out of spec. I was very Happy i did all myself and for sure that dealer wont get any good rating from me.

you ask the mechanic to show you the old shims and write down how much they were out so you can keep it in your records-

@@ripmax333 I have a CB500X late 2019 model year, it has now around 66k km and I did the maintenance since I bought it new. Never checked the valves, the sparkplugs are the same and even the transmission kit was the same till about 500km ago when I changed the front sprocket for a JT rubberized one (the original was worn), the chain and rear sprocket are still the same. It's true, if you don't hear the valves doing their thing OR if you hear them tapping then you need to adjust them, other than that don't touch them. "If it ain´t broke, don't fix it" Some people think they're doing good by messing with things that doesn´t necessarily need to be messed with and spend money unnecessarily too. Your mechanic did what he, by experience, though it would be right for your bike and you, as most people are, thought he didn't know what he was talking about and did things by yourself. There's PC44E (and newer versions) engines with well over 100k km without "touching" the valves, there's even videos on KZbin about it. They´re a little different from the other engines on the market, they have roller rocker arms that touch the cams and the valve basket, there's not as much wear as in the CB650R engine for example where the cam touches the valve basket directly.

@@tiagofigueiredo2529 the thing is that when the valve seat gets worn over time the spring always pushes the valve Up ( closed ) hence the gap between the shim and cam is always minimal so its rarely that you hear any tapping noise, at least that’s how I imagine it. The only valve’s that i hear noise from them are the old type adjustment like an old honda cub with the adjustment screw on the valve rocker arm itself. Anyway, I remember that When I’ve done them on my CB500F only the exhaust were out spec, not by much but I still adjusted them.
