How to Center Clay and Pull Up the Walls

this is a cracking video on the 2 stages of throwing a pot. Where was this video when i started. lol. This is perfect for beginners and newbies like me who have ok days and not so good days. Thankyou for the break down in pulling walls up, it what im still struggling with. in the early days i would just use trimming to shape what i was throwing but now, in my head, im being lazy and need to move the clay and im beginning to get it, this video was perfectly timed in my clay journey. thank you

My pieces are always bottom heavy. I can’t seem to get a “feel” for it. Your bottom edges have perfect right angles. I have cut them and can see it but when I’m throwing I can’t..when I go that extra pull just in case the piece fails..it’s frustrating. Any thoughts?

hmmm - yeah that’s always the toughest hump to get over! for the sake of practicing these 90 degree walls i would try throwing some pots with flat bases. stretch out the clay after you open up your centered lump. cut it in half and take a look - if you start with a nice 90 degree pot before you make your first pull it should make things easier for the next two pulls! i would try to have at least a 3 inch wide base. 😊

@@bwpottery Okay I will do that today. Also, I’m going to follow your advice regarding throwing 20 balls of clay and cut them. I also see that I have been getting attached because my pulls are finally decent but you’re right it’s better to go through that exercise to see exactly how the clay in being distributed. thank you so much! i think a great starter wheel is the clay boss from speedball. i’ve had one literally for 12 years, and only had to replace the pedal recently. and! they have a 10 year warranty. :)
